Masilamani Eswara Temple,
@Thirumullaivoyal near Avadi ,Chennai

This is a very ancient temple dedicated to Shiva and is considered to have the diety as Soyambu Lingam (Natural formation ) and is incarnated by hymns in  Thevaram and designated as a Paadal Petra Sthalam.

The sthala vritcham.is Mullai kodi abd the water tank is called Manasa Pushkarani and is built in Dtavidian
Architecture

Thirumullaivoyal temple is named after Mullai forests as the place itself has come to bd kniwn as the whole region is said to have been covered by it .

According to mythologyical history in ancient times, the forest surrounding  Tirumullaivoyal temple , was occupied by two notorious tribesmen, Vaanan and Onan from the Kurumbar tribe.

King Thondaiman, the then ruler of the land, wished to bring to a closure their
atrocities bestowed on people .

His various attempts went futile and finally he decided to wage a war against them to end their regime .

He set out with all his army comprising of infantry ,cavalry of elephants and chariots. As the troops made its way through tge mullai forest t he foot of the elephant on which he was riding got entangled in the dense foliage.

The king in an attempt to free the elephant from this got down and started cut the wild twines with his sword.

Suddenly he founf blood gushing out from below the foliage and on clearing it saw a bleeding Shiva Lingam .

The king was shocked and distressed t
He immediately started praying to Lord Shiva for forgiveness .
Lord  Shiva and Parvathi appeared before the King and ordained him to build a temple for them in this place
And so this is how this 'Masilamani Eswara' came into being .

Lord Shiva had also promised to support him in destroying the Kurumbars by sending his holy vahanam the Nandi to assist him .
The Nandi  goes and fight for the King ensures victory fir tge king ..

This is the reason the Nandi in this temple faces away form.the lord ever ready to leave to execute anybtask the lord ordains him.to do .

Lord Shiva and Goddess Kodiyidai Amman garbagrahams are interchanged for reasons unknown
To mark the victory over kurumbars
The king seized prized possession of the Kurumbars namely two pillars made of 'Vellerukku' and placed it in the sanctum sanctorum and can be seen wven today
The temple interior resembles the shaoe of an elephant lying to lend credence to the mythology of this temple .
No abhishekam is donevfor the main diety Shiva but ince z year the Sandal woid paste is replaced and during this time it is possibke to see the top of Shivalingam spliced by the sword .

The temple over the years has become
Very famous for carrying out Archana worship to Nandi the messenger and carrying out 27 pradhakshinam.by unwed person .

Those who carry out this prayer to Nandhi usually is reported get married within a period of 3 to 6 months without fail .It must be added here that the author himself and many in his family have experienced this in their lives .

Sri Masilamaniswarar Temple in Thirumullaivoyal is one of the ancient Shiva temples dating back by 1500+ years. The temple is approachable on the Avadi road - few 100m from the main road. This temple is one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalam temples.

The main deity - Linga is big and said to that it has a scar because of the then king's sword hit the Linga by mistake. The scar on the Linga is filled and closed with sandalwood paste all through a the year except one day - Sadaya nakshatra during the month of March-April. The King begged pardon and was blessed by Lord Shiva. During difficult times, the Lord offered to help the king and even Nandi sits in opposite direction in an attempt to help the king to defeat dacoits.

The Goddess is called Kodiyidai Nayagi - and the place is one of the Sakthi origins - known for Kriya Shakthi. It took around 20 minutes to go around the temple and have pleasant dharshan.

On a fine Saturday afternoon, myself along with mom went to Thirumullaivoyal via Train, got down at Thirumullaivoyal station, took an auto to reach the temple.

The temple belongs to one of the Paadal petra stalams, incarnated by the hymns of Sundarar, Ramalinga Swamigal & Arunagirinathar. The main deities of the temple are Lord Shiva - Masilamaniswarar & Kodiyidai Nayagi. We had good dharshan, offered our prayers to the deities.

Separate sanctum was available for Lord Muruga, due to Thai (Tamil month) Kiruthigai, special poojas were performed on that day. We had blissful evening at the temple.
