Note: Trip Advisor has duplicate pages regarding access to Ka’ena Point, and may wish to follow Google Maps icon labeling to avoid any future confusion. While one page is for the Ka’ena Point State Park on the Waianae side, numerous reviews describe access from the Waialua side, which should be listed as “Ka’ena Point Trail” as indicated on google maps. However, by including (Makaha) on that page, it infers the trailhead near Yokohama Bay at the end of the other Farrington Hwy (93), that is actually the State Park boundary. Anyone wishing to hike or bike from either side, should visit the Division of State Parks Website via the link on T.A. for accurate directions, and up to date info. I’m posting this review on the Ka’ena Point Trail page, that actually should be corrected to include reference to Waialua, or a new page needs to be created for accuracy. The gate and parking area are not within the state park boundary.

While spending a day on the north shore part of Oahu, we decided to drive out to the end of Hwy (930), a separate section of Farrington Hwy. Passing the Polo field, Horse stables, and Dillingham Airfield, on a rather windy and cool December day, we reached the end of the paved road and turned into a gravel parking area. The gate was locked, and recent rains made a muddy mess of the dirt road beyond. Not planning to hike to the point, we did get some nice photos at Mokule’ia Rocky Beach, and the stunning Kauhao Pali behind us. Lots of informative colorful story boards around describing local wildlife, and one giving the history of the three ancient volcanos that created the island of Oahu.

This drive and parking area felt very safe and relaxing. My experience on a previous trip to Oahu, where we drove to the end of the (93) past Makaha, was markedly different. Homeless Beach encampments, abandon vehicles, interesting characters riding bikes in traffic. Way more sketchy! Just saying. If you do plan to hike, remember that Ka’ena is Hawaiian for “the heat” and plan accordingly. Always lock your car and leave nothing inside.

Flat trail along the coast with rocky cliffs and sandy beaches. Walked all the way to Ka'ena Point where two monk seals baked in the sun. It was also nesting season for shearwater birds and the friendly park ranger showed us some and it was amazing to see. Saw another monk seal on the way back (look down the cliffs) and loved this hike. Bring plenty of food and water! Including the state park and taking a break at the Point (we also took lots of pictures), plan for 3-4 hours. We did this right after our morning dolphin excursion cruise and arrived at the trail around 11.

The trail itself is a little boring but once you get to the tip of the island, there is a great area to explore -- lots of interesting rocky beach areas where elephant seals lounge. The long beach area before the trail begins is also a very nice relaxing beach.

Ocean on one side, mountains on the other. 2.5 miles to the preserve. 1 mile in the preserve. Beautiful scenery. We saw a monk seal laying on the beach. Make sure and take enough water.

Nice trail along the leeward shore but make sure you pack in a lot of water, a hat and plenty of sunscreen as it is in the open and can be very, very hot. Most of it is easy going but there is a section that can be a little challenging due to some washout. Beautiful scenery.

Beautiful to overlook the water and look for the monk seals and birds, but do not get too close to the animals. Of course you should take pictures, but leave the animals in their natural environment and do not get in their way. Overall, gorgeous area to walk to and overlook.

We happened upon this trail when Route 93 ended in Yokohama Bay. We walked up the path, which was hot and sunny, and enjoyed wonderful views of the jagged coast line and crystal clear blue waters. I wasn't really prepared for a long hike because I didn't put enough sun screen on prior to setting out. We turned around after walking about 30 minutes up the trail. I wished we had made it to the end point, but the sun was unrelenting and I burn too easily, so back we went. I recommend this hike as long as you have water and sun screen. I would love to come back to walk again, probably earlier the morning and with plenty of above mentioned provisions.
