This lovely reserve is part of the world reknown Children’s Eternal Rainforest. Only a small percentage is used for tourism and the rest is for the animals. The well-marked trails take you through a dense forest. You can walk to El Mirador for a spectacular view. This is more of a low-key hiking experience than the other more well-known preserves.

After seeing the big crowds and challenging parking situation at the Monteverde Forest Reserve, we decided to go to this place instead — and were really pleased with our decision :). We didn’t encounter anyone else during our hike through the cloud forest, and enjoyed the many kilometers of trails here. Free parking close to the entrance was really nice as well. Definitely recommend the Children’s Forest!

Wow! What a cool place this is to visit at night. Our guide showed us so many amazing snakes, spiders, and insects. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Monteverde. Our guide’s knowledge was so impressive! We saw a tarantula, viper, scorpion and so much more!

We hired a guide for this hike and it was honestly one of my favorite experiences of Costa Rica. We saw so many beautiful birds and butterflies in addition to howler monkeys and even an adult viper. The best thing was how peaceful and completely uncrowned it was compared to places like Manuel Antonio and the hanging bridges in Arenal. We saw 4 other people during the 3 hours we spent there. It is truly a magical and beautiful place that embodies the essence of the area.

Had a guided night tour in the Bajo Del Tigre part of the reserve, 5.30-7.30pm. Book online to avoid disappointment, someone was turned away at the door with no reservation as our tour was full. Torches provided. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes as the path is rocky in places and take a rain-coat, bug spray and water.
Our tour with guide Erik was fantastic, we were a small group including kids and older adults. It feels really dark at first but you soon adjust to the light enough to be able to spot creatures yourself. We saw lots of spiders, including tarantulas, grasshoppers, beetles, scorpion, frog and sleeping birds. Even had to step over a puma poop on the path! Erik was a great spotter and very informative too, he showed us in his nature book which birds we could hear in the distance. He made sure that the kids in our group got to see everything and answered all our questions well. He told us a lot about the flora we passed too. Souvenirs available in the reception area. We paid $26 each and it was money well spent, highly recommend.

Loved hiking here both during the day to see a Bellbird and at night where we saw and heard a variety of wildlife. The Children's Eternal Rain Forest is one of my favorite conservation stories - with children around the world helping to preserve a very large and highly biologically diverse forest. Getting to Bajo del Tigre is easy and there's close parking. Great and friendly staff and a small gift shop are also nice. Hiking here is relatively easy with several well marked trails to choose from. Wonderful place to visit!

If you are patient and stay in the right place, close to the signed Bellbird area, you will get the best phots of these fantastic birds that you will ever have! There are lots of other birds there too, but I had my best success with the Bellbirds that I was there for. The Manakins are a plenty too, but very difficult to photograph.

The Monteverde Conservation League (MCL) is an independent, non-profit association that is dedicated to the conservation, preservation and rehabilitation of tropical ecosystems and their biodiversity. In 1987, the MCL embarked on an innovative land acquisition program, in which money that was raised by Swedish schoolchildren went to buy and protect threatened land. Since then, the league has worked with other organizations in more than 40 countries to help form what is now Costa Rica’s largest private reserve, The Children’s Eternal Rainforest (El Bosque Eterno de los Niños). The MCL manages the Children’s Eternal Rainforest and the Bajo del Tigre trail system, which are situated in between the town of Santa Elena and the Monteverde Reserve.

In February 2023, our family made a very special visit to Bajo del Tigre. In memory of my eldest son Per, who died in an accident in Sweden in 1990, a lot of money was collected and used to buy rainforest through the Swedish organization Barnens regnskog (i.e The Children’s Rainforest).

It was of course very emotional to visit El Bosque Eterno de los Niños after all these years, and we received a wonderful reception from the management and staff at the centre. A special memorial site had been set up right next to the hiking trail where we planted a tree - a Tabacón - in Per's memory. This was followed by a very interesting guided tour following the easy-to-walk paths. From the knowledgeable guide, we learned a great deal about the animals, insects and plants found in the area. A nice coffee break at the information center together with the reserve's staff ended the morning.

After dark we were back for another guided hike by flashlight. It was very exciting to walk in the dark, and our excellent guide had a lot of interesting things to say. We saw a lot of sleeping birds and insects we never would have discovered without a guide.

Bajo del Tigre is easy to reach from Santa Elena and a visit is highly recommended, not least as part of supporting their important work to preserve the rainforest. The guided tours are also recommended. The trails are easy to walk on, even for children. Our 6 and 4 year olds had no problem keeping up.

We did the night tour at Bajo del Tigre after viewing the beautiful sunset from their platform. Our guide was Orlando and he did a super job of finding interesting creatures in the forest and telling us about them. I was fascinated by the sleeping birds! We saw a side striped palm pit viper at a nice distance up in a tree, tarantulas, a katydid that looks like a leaf with sticks for legs, a caterpillar that looks like a stick, and insects that look like thorns. They were extremely cool and we would never have seen them without Orlando's help. There were 2 or 3 other groups also having tours at the same time and I appreciated that they kept the groups small and spread out. The tour guides communicated with radios to inform others when they found something of interest.

This trail was a lovely surprise, we had almost the whole thing to ourselves and saw few people on the way. It was a very pretty trail. It is a little rocky so I would suggest hiking boots or sturdy tennis shoes. To get to the falls requires lots of stair climbing. We saw some great scenery and some good bird species.
