This lighthouse folly, about 100 feet high, was built in 1791 to provide work during a famine. The surrounding area enclosed by the low-lying wall was a paupers’ cemetery in the 19th century, and has now been developed into a community park, the Peoples’ Park. Mass is celebrated there annually in memory of the Great Famine that occurred in Ireland in 1845–49 when the potato crop failed in successive years. The tower was all closed up when we visited, and the window was bricked closed, so it wasn't possible to experience the great views from the top deck. A plaque higher up on the pillar is dedicated to Henry Aaron Baker Esq. architect and the masons and builders of the pillar.

A good friend of mine showed this to me, I had not even heard of it before. It was built by a local landowner and it's a strange thing to look up at a lighthouse, when the sea is over 10 miles away. Worth a visit just for that quirkiness!

Not far from Kells, was built to the honour of father. Looks like lighthouse in the midlands. Anyway deserves respect. If not far from Kells make sense to be visited.

I am making my way to all the lighthouses in Ireland and was delighted to be able to get inside this one.... all 165 steps.... Run by lovely people with a great knowledge. Loved our visit even though it was raining. Highly recommend a visit with all the family. Lots of history to learn here and a memorial to some of the people from the area who died in the famine.

On our travels towards Galway, we saw this off tower off the road - had to stop and investigate.
Am still not sure why this 'monument' was built to resemble a Lighthouse but the tower and the other historical significant monuments here are definitely worth stopping for.
It was built by the First Earl of Bective in memory of his father Sir Thomas Taylor in 1791. There is a Paupers Graveyard nearby which holds the graves of many people who died in the Great Famine.
The Tower was closed when we were there but it is quite the sight from the outside and postdates the old Iron Age fort that was there previously.
There are marked walks from here around the countryside.

Fantastic place to visit, we'll maintained and great for a Picnic... I originally thought I was near the Sea when I first spotted this inland "Lighthouse".

If you are lucky to visit the spire of Lloyd on a Bank Holiday Monday its usually open for a few hours. I missed the last one but got lucky today. Managed to climb all 164? Steps to the top. What a beautiful day to see the meath countryside in all its summer golden colours. Worth a visit even if its not open just too have a walk around the ground. Most people might not know there is an old Paupers Cemetery next to the tower from famine times.
Tower can be seen from miles around so this was a bucket list item ticked off.
If you're passing Kells it won't take up to much of your time to stop by.

I think a group that size could park there, I assume you would be bringing a bus. But if you want to be able to climb up into the tower you somehow need to find specific info on when they have it open or make arrangements to have it open at a time you setup with the people who manage it. Elsewise, your party will just walk the grounds and see the Spire from outside at ground level.
How many steps is there in the tower
I live right beside the to were but I need it by the next 5 hours cause I have a project please respond fast
Is their a pole to get down the tower faster instead of steps in the tower of Lloyd?? My friend said so but I'd like another opinion thanks:)
No there is not sorry but if u count how many steps there is u get a lollipop😂
