Passo del tonale was our first ski holiday. With 2 teens that are confident boarders and myself that was a complete novice it has everything. Prices are surprisingly heap too.

Definitely a beautiful area... but today the open slopes were very few and therefore the price of the ski pass high compared to the offer... but still a very beautiful area

This was my first ski holiday and I went with my 15Yr old son who had ski’d with school once. I wanted somewhere snowsure and reasonably priced for the Feb half term.
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Paridiso which was ideal for us and I’ve done a review of that if you want to have a look.
We booked lessons through Crystal ski with a local company Scuola sci Tonale ( black and blue uniform) and they were excellent. On your first lesson it’s a bit chaotic as everyone has to ski about 70m and they assess your ski ability and assign you a group, our instructor was Thomas and he was really good, he was quite chatty and funny and we progressed well over the week. ( I had done a full day course at snozone in Castleford before going, and recommend it as it put me in a good place and I wasn’t in the beginners group)
There are only 40 runs I think in Tonale, the majority being reds, there are plenty of blues at the base of the slopes and Blue 18 and Blue 34 are by far the longest. Blue 34 is a long blue with some steep parts at the star, it’s well worth the long ride up, but be aware in the afternoon the steep sections get cut up and are a challenge, best to go earlier in the day.
The Glacier is worth a visit if only for the views, if like us you can’t ski down black runs, you can get the gondola to the top and all the way back down, or stop at the middle station and ski the shirt blue run before getting the gondola the rest of the way down. I would recommend this as it’s a lovely run. To get to the gondola station at the bottom, save walking ski Blue 18 and cut across to the car park of the gondola station part was along the run👍
We progressed onto several of the red runs, which were all good, Red 29 is a good starter red when it wasn’t closed for training, but to be honest blue 29 is fairly steep for a blue.
We were lucky to get about 2ft of snow fall towards the back end of our week which was awesome and provided some great skiing conditions, prior to this it was a little warm and first thing there was a lot of ice which turned a little slushy in the late afternoon sun, it was however a minor issue and there was plenty of snow when compared to some resorts.
The skidoo trips are great fun if you fancy it, we did one with Tonale Motors, and it was excellent, I managed to get 75kph out of mine!!! Only advice is if your not confident in handling one, let someone who is drive as our group was held up by some nervous riders which was massively frustrating..
Nightlife is pretty no existent from what I could see, but then again I was completely worn out each night so was in bed early 😂😂
For a beginner it was an ideal location, and if my wife wanted to learn I would consider returning, I think though if you are a confident skier you’d soon get bored of the limited runs available to you..

Numerous slopes of varying difficulty, comfortable facilities, guaranteed snow also in relation to the altitude. If you are not looking for social life and entertainment, but your holiday focuses on skiing, this location is perfect.

Weekend vehicle congestion and resulting air pollution makes the entire resort smells like a forecourt of a busy petrol station. You cannot leave the window open in your room after 3pm ~ late on Sat/Sun. Happy to pay more visitor tax if the resort would limit private vehicle and arrange more frequent shuttle coach, or encourage electric vehicles instead of diesel/petrol. Weekend air pollution really spoils the otherwise a scenic, quiet little resort.

Beautiful landscape. BUT very rude staff who chased us away from the lifts 10 minutes before closing insulting us! It is our right to use the facilities until 4.40pm! This episode has occurred many times and by checking the site we are right. This happened many times in the smugglers' facility.

Great resort , runs pisted well despite lack of snow .
Glazier well worth a visit , although not when it’s windy .
Run to ponte de legno nice but take care , option of two black runs only from the double chair lift

Great place for families as all the main pistes lead back to the village and practically no queuing. There are two restaurants at the top of the two highest runs with fantastic views. A gondola will take you up to a black run on the glacier and apparently the other black run under the gondola is the longest in Europe. Plenty of bars and cafes to choose from for an apres ski drink.

A compact ski resort good for beginners and medium experienced, but lacking the variety found in many other locations. Excellent organisation and pistes groomed well. The area seems to be affected by wind a lot of the time

Advice please, want to stay local in Passo but also want to go up to glacier, do we need local lift passes or area ones if going up the glacier side opposite beginner slopes?
Skrevet 14. februar 2022
The red slope at the top of the glacier is very steep, I would suggest it is verging on a black rather than a red slope however, it is work going up to the Glacier to look at the fabulous panoramic views, you can always take the lift back down the mountain. The black run I would not consider to be particularly difficult though.
The best bet is to check the lift pass coverage on the Pasdo Tonale Website to ensure the glacier is covered, I am fairly sure it is but it will be worth checking.

Grazie mille

Hi can anyone recommend ski school for kids in Passo Tonale? Possibly one that provides lunch? Or lessons longer than 2hrs?
Thanks
Skrevet 27. april 2019
We did adult ski school which was 2 hours 9 til 11. I think the kids ski school was same time but our hotel had child care after which included lunch.
Skrevet 27. april 2019
Any recommendation for adult ski school - been skiing once before last year - thanks.

We didn’t take any grown up lessons. But our daughter attended lessons at ski school passo Tonale. They were very helpful and flexible. Especially Simone is a very friendly guy.
It’s a great area for beginners. So you’ll learn quickly I imagine. Enjoy!

Can anyone suggest how much spending money would be needed for a week with half board? Thanks
Skrevet 7. januar 2019
Hi, first question is do you like to go out and party, if so it depends you could manage with £200 or you could go crazy and spend £800 lol 🤗
Skrevet 13. januar 2019
Hi Cervinia or Zermatt is a good choice plus you can use 1 ski pass for both resorts, No brainer lol..!! also it is cheaper to stay in Cervinia.
Hope this helps you with your choice.
Have fun..!!

Hi what was the name of the other ski area that you could extend your lift pass and it is easy to get to?
Skrevet 1. januar 2019
I’m sorry for my late reaction. I didn’t know people could ask questions. That area is called Ponte do Legio. It is really easy to get there, just take the two cable/cabins lifts from the passo Tonale area (I think it was lift 15). The good thing is, when you plan your rides you don’t have to walk. You just take the right lift and end up at the cabines. Enjoy!
Skrevet 23. januar 2019
Those of you who travelled independently where did you buy your lift pass and how much did it cost?
Skrevet 5. oktober 2018
There are several ticket offices. You can find their location on the passo ski site. I bought mine in an office next to Grand hotel paradiso. Very convenient spot to park, buy a pass, rent an equipment and ascend the slopes.
You can buy also via internet site but only a dayly passes. In a ticket office you can get also a point tickets. Every slope has it's price in points so if you buy this, you just pay for what you used. Prices begin from 2-3 points for easy slopes. Ticket are with 80 points and more as far as I remember. Several riders can use the same ticket. Much cheaper if you are a beginner.
