We;ve been visiting Newfoundland in the summer for about 25 years but just visited the port au port area last year and again this year. One of my favorite stops was Our Lady of Lourdes Church and Grotto. The church is beautiful and is open for you to see the sanctuary and use the restrooms. We were greeted by the friendliest young parishioners who talked to us about their lives in the church and offered us tea and cookies. The grotto is beautiful and so peaceful. The waters are said to be curative and the rosary is fashioned from buoys. A wonderful place for a quiet moment.

We did not go looking for the Grotto but found it purely by accident. We did not even know that Pope John Paul II had stopped here at this site and we can see why it was a must-do on his trip. It is a great spot, well laid out and super interesting to walk around and climb to the top of.

In the stunning inlet of Flatrock, a unique replica to Our Lady of Lourdes in Portugal. Pope John Paul II visited here and blessed the fisherman's boats in the bay.

Flatrock can be found when you take Wind Gap Road off the main highway. It is a beautiful coastal drive.

Situated on a cliff in Flatrock, this place is not only beautiful, but quite peaceful. It certainly adds to the beauty of the Flatrock landscape.

Our visit to the grotto was not a disappointment. It is beautiful, spiritual, and very well worth the visit to this picturesque spot at Flatrock. We arrived just before sunset so the light was amazing, beautiful outdoor stations of the cross as well as the altar that Pope John Paul II said mass at and the stone to commemorate his visit in 1984. We stayed to attend mass in the lovely church and really appreciated the experience.

Not being Catholic or even religious I wasn't sure if this would be our thing, but we stopped anyway. It's tastefully done and peaceful and then we visited the nearby modern church which is worth a look.

The grotto is a must stop for a moment of prayer and reflection overlooking Newfoundland's beauty. It is an impressive grotto carved into the rock where one can pray the stations of the cross or take a moment to pray where St. John Paul II knelt and prayed.

We went here during Spring and there was still snow on the ground. A good pilgrimage area for Catholics who visit St Johns.

If you're Catholic and a fan of Pope John Paul II, this place is a must-visit. He visited the grotto as part of his Canada trip in the 80s. It is not as grandiose as other Catholic grottos elsewhere in the world but I guess pilgrims do not really mind.
