On our short visit to Selby we couldn't resist taking a peek into this famous and impressive church. It is a former Benedictine abbey and current Anglican parish church in the town. It was founded in 1069 and is obviously steeped in glorious, sometimes tragic English history. Suffice it to say that this is definitely a place to spend some time if you are interested in English, religious history and architecture. Wonderful.

Excellent tour giving the history of the Abbey, also included some little known facts, like the “wonky” arch and the hidden very miniature embroidery. Thank you Ruth.

A masterpiece of building design and engineering. The skills of the craftsmen hundreds of years ago leaves us with this amazing building. Well preserved and kept. The other good thing is that its free to look round.

Visited Selby Abby was a very relax free visit
Admission was free they even offered a free tour which I did take and was very informative
This was a Saturday and there were several vendors with historical references from making buttons for clothing which was amazing
Several different types of looms demonstrated
A Beautiful amazing structure with even more amazing history a must visit

Externally this church is impressive. And that continues when you enter. The stonework tells a real tale, and the stained glass is good too. But the piece de resistance is the quire and sanctuary - beautiful carving, elaborate gold-work, and an impression that it all "works as one". Very very impressive and worth your time

We are lucky to have such a beautiful Abbey in the heart of our town. It’s full of history; somewhere we can take some time out and maybe light a candle for a loved one plus the friendly volunteers make everyone feel welcome.
We had the rare opportunity to do the tower tour and had a fantastic experience. The volunteers were great showing us the bell chamber and clock. They did a bell ringing demonstration and gave us a tutorial which was a great experience! We couldn’t go out onto the tower roof because it had been raining but we were able to stand at the top of the step ladder and look out. Would highly recommend!

This was my second visit to the Abbey.
It is an amazing building both inside and out; if you love history, stained glass windows or you are just looking for something different to do, please go and visit.
The Abbey dates back to 1069 so has amazing stonework and stained glass. The ceiling bosses are really intricate; some of the best that I’ve ever seen. Look out for the hidden heads in the stone bosses.
Selby Abbey is a really lovely place to visit; the atmosphere is warm and welcoming with friendly guides and lots of information.
Highly recommended!

Fascinating history of the monks at Selby Abbey and how it all came into being, very good for educational visits, lovely cafe and wonderful grounds to walk in and explore, glorious views of the lakes, swans and the octagonal tower overlooking the ruins of the abbey that are fairly well in tact for ruins and well preserved, play area for children to.

This beautiful building has much old history but still manages to be active within the community of today.
A free booklet is available inside the church giving you the Abbeys history as well as several short and longer distance walks around the town, covering interesting architecture and history.
The Abbey is well maintained, has stunning stained glass windows and even a cafe selling great cakes!

This is amazing Norman addey with great coffee shop It is still a working church and has lots of great helps . With staute of Queen Mary and King George, there is amazing stain glass and one of Queen Victoria the origin of the American flag.

Free although donations of any amount are appreciated I always put a little in when I go. They did at one point let you go to the top. We her this is still the case I have no idea but it's lovely.

There's not even a set of moral blackmaillers at the door to try and get you to give money! They seem to believe humans are charitable! Get yer hand down with at least a fiver each and prove them correct in their faith in human nature.
