OH MY GOSH! This was magical. Our tour guide, Ole, was fantastic. If you enjoy being around lots of birds, iguanas, turtles, and crocodiles....you'll enjoy this tour. I loved the sounds of all the birds....it was beautiful and exotic.
Eco-tourism at its best!

Great time. Exceptional place preserved thanks to the kindness and work of the locals. The guide was very interesting and shared a lot with us. What to do to participate in the important mangrove conservation effort!

I was on this tour that included a visit to Laguna Ventanilla. We walked to the dock and boarded a boat tour on the lagoon followed by a stop on the small island to see the wildlife sanctuary. We saw several baby crocodiles, sea turtles, different types of birds, white tailed deer, and a sleepy spider monkey on the visit. Overall, the visit was interesting and I would rate as good, but not necessarily an attraction to visit, but just something to do. I was lucky that my tour guide/driver was bilingual, as he interpreted what the Laguna Ventanilla staff was saying about the animals.

La Ventanilla is a cooperative that has been around 25 years. Its objective is to conserve the ecosystem found in the area, such as mangroves, birth and spawning of turtles, crocodiles and animals that live in the place.
The fee paid helps maintain the place, with mangrove reforestation activities, control and monitoring of crocodiles and care of the beaches for the spawning and birth of turtles and rescue and care of confiscated wild animals.
Widely recommended for all people of all ages and thus learn a little more about the nature that surrounds the area and the activities that the people who live there do.
I consider it a must-see for tourists who visit the area of Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite, etc.

This was a moving and touching experience, amazing and heart warming. The community has out so much hard work into keeping the crocodiles in their natural habitat, and renewing the eco-community since a hurricane hit the community. Nicola was amazing to talk to and his uncle was a great guide, sensitive to the fact that our Spanish is poor.

No somos millonarios. No iríamos a esos lugares.

We went with friends and family kids 9 & 6 years old and everyone enjoyed themselves.

We loved the boat ride and the diversity of wildlife - seeing crocodiles on the water, assortment of birds in the air.

Niko did a wonderful job entertaining and informing each of us.

The natural beauty is incredible to see.
Learning about the efforts to maintain and improve biodiversity locally and the international projects was fascinating.

This is great for any type of traveler; groups, families, couples.

It’s a magical space. The variety of animals they are rehabilitating and studying was cool.

La Ventanilla is a beachside village located approximately 2.5km west of Mazunte.

It currently hosts a range of ecotourism projects and has a very interesting history. In the 1990s La Ventanilla consisted of only a handful of families with income sourced from a coconut plantation as well as hunting (including turtle and crocodile). A lot of the ecotourism developed in the wake of the ban on turtle and crocodile hunting. After the income to the village was reduced they began to work with groups such as ecosolar to develop tours along the lagoon which forms in the Tonameca river. This large lagoon is cut off from the sea for most of the year and supports a interesting ecosystem of birds, turtles, iguanas and crocodiles. Using money generated from the tours they invest in rehabilitation of this lagoon - which was largely replanted in 1997 after the devastating effects of cyclones Rick and Pauline. The money has also been invested in other projects in the area. One project is that involving the local turtle population - people collect the eggs of breeding turtles which nest along the long beach this village is built next to. They protect, hatch and reintroduce these turtles back into the ocean. Another project occurs on Uma Island and involves breeding of Iguana, crocodiles and white tailed deer for reintroduction into the wild.

In terms of tourism the main activity is a guided tour the lagoon (although there are also some tour options involving horse riding, bird watching, nocturnal turtle observation and/or release).

Logistically to get here we travelled by Mazunte via taxi at a cost of 100 mexican peso. The advantage of a taxi is they take you to the village whereas the collective will drop you off at the turn off on the main road which is a 1.2km walk away from the village. We did an afternoon tour which finished at 1730 which meant we were unable to find a taxi back and did not have phone reception to call one - however we walked to the turnoff and were able to hail a taxi there back to mazunte for a cost of 50 peso.

In terms of the lagoon tour there are two companies.
* Lagarto Real (RED SHIRTS, located at the end of the road closest to the beach)
* Servicios Ecoturisticos La Ventanilla (WHITE SHIRTS)

The big difference is that Servico Ecoturisticos La Ventanilla (white shirts) not only take you through the lagoon but include a stop at Uma Island to view the Iguana, crocodiles and white tailed deer. The red shirts are also reportingly cheaper (my guide book states red shirts cost 80 peso and white shirts 100 peso, however I was charged 200 peso for the white shirt tour so I’m not sure if the red shirts have also increased the prices).

The tour starts with a 10 minute walk to the lagoon. From here we took a half an hour boat ride around the lagoon. Because the larger trees were destroyed in the 1997 cyclone the lagoon is quite exposed and the boats lack any kind of cover. With this in mind I would carry water and a hat. Following the lagoon tour we visited Uma Island where we were shown the Iguanas, crocodiles and white tailed deer. I felt the conditions were acceptable for western standards. You can see the Iguana and the crocodiles in the lagoon.

My biggest criticisms of the white shirt tour was that it included a half an hour commission stop on the island where there was an awkward expectation we would buy souvenirs or food/drinks. I felt this was unnecessary, particularly as the tour was only 1.5 hours. I’m also still not sure why the cost was 200 peso ?Gringo tax.

Overall this is a worthwhile activity that supports a good cause so I would recommend it to others.
