Fabulous. We stayed at the Alpine Lodge in the village which had a great view of Mount Cook from our bedroom window Immaculate shared kitchen with comfy seats. We walked the Hooker Valley Trail which was absolutely stunning. Crossing 3 swingbridges over rushing rivers, past waterfalls and lovely alpine plants and ending up at the frozen lake beneath the glaciers and Mount Cook and even had little icebergs in it.

Mount Cook is 3,724m tall and is NZ’s highest mountain. It’s visible from a long way away (and definitely from Lake Tekapo) but the closer you get the better it looks!

You get great views of the mountain on the road from Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook village and can also see it by plane or by helicopter. But a fabulous way to see it up close is to walk the Hooker Valley track (three hour out and back walk) which takes you to Hooker lake immediately below the mountain (see separate review page).

Just majestic and stunning - not to be missed!

This is one place you have to visit. FREE ENTRY. Easy drive to site and large car park at Mount Cook reserve. Walk easily along the boardwalk path with some stairs. There are swing bridges which are very safe for families to use.
The track is beautiful and the views breathtaking.
When you reach the Mount Cook glacier lake, sit down and take time to have a picnic. Throw the melting ice back into the lakes. Climb up higher and sit on the rocks to get an unobstructed view of Mt Cook itself. Breathe in the fresh air. Heaven just showed up.

The first time we saw Mt Cook at a distance is when we reached Lake Tekapo. It was breathtaking! With Lake Pukaki in the foreground, the views became even better. We did the Kea Point Track (hour-long return from Park Campground Parking) to get up-close views of the tallest peak in New Zealand. The Huddleston Glacier was also visible in the next mountain. It took us 3.5 hours to drive from Christchurch to Twizel, plus another hour (including stops for scenic views) to reach Mt Cook National Park. A visit to South Island without visiting Mt Cook will be incomplete. Highly recommend.

Aoraki Mount Cook was a top highlight from our trip to the South and North Island. Incredible, stunning, beautiful scenery. Snowy mountains, crazy colors of blue waters, waterfalls, flowers, many options for walking and enjoying. Our top moments were Muller Hut and Sealy Tarns, Hooker Valley, Tasman Lake and River, Red Tarns.

Muller Hut and Sealy Tarn: Stunning views. This is a challenging track. The first section up to Sealy Tarn is stairs and stairs and stairs. We started up in the early morning in the fog. Still had fog and heavy clouds at the tarn. Still beautiful! From here, the track is more of a rock scramble. We found this part fun. In early December, we trekked through some snow. Very well marked and easy to follow the orange markers. We spent some time resting at the hut and thankful the sky cleared a bit and we got to see Mount Cook and the surrounds. Wow! Seeing the valley below to the mountains. Amazing. Worth the effort up. We got to enjoy the views on the way down with limited clouds. Stopped back at Sealy tarn to catch some slightly windy reflections. This is my top track from Mount Cook!

Hooker Valley Track:
We caught some rainy days. So we rushed out early with rain forecast to start by 11am. It was a bit cloudy but you could see a decent bit of visibility of the other mountains around Mount Cook. Mount Cook itself did not come out for us. We still really enjoyed. So much beauty for fairly easy effort. This track felt doable for a wide range of exercise and hiking levels. It is mostly flat. Some small inclines and a couple of steps. So much to see along this track. Would love to come back and try to catch a clearer day in the future!

Tasman Lake, River, Glacier view:
There are multiple shorter trails here. We did the glacier view on a clear evening as we arrive. The color of the water, wow. We did the river tracks in a light drizzle and wind. Still beautiful, we just did not take the time I usually would like to fully enjoy. Another reason to return some day :)

Red Tarn: Also lots of stairs, but far less than Sealy. Lovely views here.

You get stunning views of the area just from the hotels and lodges.

This is a must if visiting the South Island in our opinion. If you can make it happen, do!

Very relaxing place. There are plenty of hiking options with varying difficulties and lengths. Kea Point look out hike is flat and about 3km long, about 2 hours return from The Hermitage.

We self-drive from Lake Tekapo which was approximately an hour's drive into the Mt Cook National Park. One of the most scenic drives we have ever done, even if it was cloudy and wet. Once at the Mt Cook Village, roads are well-sign posted to either Hooker Valley trail or Tasman Glacier lake trail.

This review will cover Hooker Valley trail. Plenty of parking even for campervans. Free entry with no parking fees either. At the parking area there is a communal kitchen/resting area and toilet facilities. There is only another along the Hooker Valley trail.

The hike trail is easy-moderate with the trails being navigable by children as well and with a generally flat to some very slight inclines on the way in. Trails are wide enough and some sections of the trail are via boardwalks. Do practice caution when on boardwalks when wet or snow as they can be slippery. The trail also consists of 3 suspended bridges.

The trail does get a bit more elevation closer to the glaciers. Exceptional views throughout the hike as it winds it way towards the glacier. The glacier lake is a definitely must-see. With two lookouts; one main lookout with picnic tables and another which is off the path but takes you down to the lake's edge.

Highly recommend this hike. Overall it took us a little just over 4 hours for the return hike. Ensure to bring plenty of water and comfortable or waterproof shoes depending on the weather.

Strongly recommend the hooker valley trail which is a very smooth and relatively short walk that has a magnificent view - will suit families with young children as well.

We did this tour with Cheeky Kiwi travel and had a marvellous time. We did the Hooker Valley Trail which is about 5 kns each way but the hike was so worth it.
Out guide Sinchan made the experience very special. His knowledge of the place’s history geography economy and mythical background is truly astounding. He interspersed the tour with the right amount of commentary and music. He had great taste in music by the way. As we were approaching the mountain, he played some deep spiritual music that set the tone for the experience. He’s with, jovial, helpful snd kind and took some amazing photos gor us.
The coach was comfortable and we did it all in the right amount of time.
