There are in fact TWO resorts. One is government run, very affordable but limited skiing as most runs closed due to "training". Only a long easy green open when we visited. 3 hours pass plus skis, boots, sticks and helmet (obligatory) cost USD28. 3 hour instructor cost USD85. Facilities rather basic, no on piste refreshments etc. The second, Sunmountain by the Club Med hotel, , is private run and MUCH better with some great blue/red runs plus easy learner green, but more expensive. 4 hour pass plus ski, boots, sticks and helmets cost USD 75. 2 hours instructor cost USD85.

Club med was amazing and the service is superb. Especially Vinnie, i had a DIY drink and she remembered it every time i order. Very good customer relation, she’s very friendly and helpful. She even offer to help to get ticket for ice world harbin. Really appreciate the effort she puts in to help. I would come back to club med because of the great service i can get here.

I visited Yabuli in early March, by then the snow surface was becoming compacted and icy. Yabuli seems to lack adequate snow fall , the ground beside the ski runs were largely devoid of snow cover, the resort relies on the snow cannons to provide snow for the pistes.
The red and black slopes are certainly steeper than many I encountered in Japan, the steep slopes and icy surfaces may prove challenging for newbies.
The whole resort set up is quite basic compared to ski resorts in Europe or Japan. There's adequate equipment rental outlets at the base, F& B amenities are quite limited.

One of the biggest in China. Offers reasonable skiing and other facilities. Far from everything else in China. Rental equipment not good, so bring your own, if possible. No point in going, unless travelling to for example Harbin for other reasons. Anyway a fun experience.

China's best ski resort, for now. 4 black runs, 5 blue/red slopes all deviations of one route. Sun mountain resort best field to visit, one gondola and 3 lefts. Not bad overall but nothing compared to best of Europe or Japan. Worthwhile for 1 or 2 days if happen to be in Harbin anyway or even if living in Beijing. Otherwise not worth a specific trip.

We been through Korea Japan ski resort and thus was our third holiday with ski. I will say it was the worst among all.
1.the critical portion was the no smoking which there was no enforcement. My family with young kids have to suffer from 2xchina ski man smoking in the cabin on the way up with us . What can we do in that situation.
Toilet cleaningness. The toilet and the ski rental was very bad shape that my young daughter had to insist going back to hotel to pee

I have skied in many places, ranging from Europe, to Canada, US, Hokkaido. Yabuli is by far the worst.
The slopes are exposed to the howling wind so whatever snow that falls is promptly blown off the mountains. You are left with bare ice to ski on. Or pebbles of compacted snow on ice so you feel you are skiing on gravel. HORRIBLE.
The cold can be really biting. Temperatures of -20 to -30C are not fun. One of my ski buddies had frost bite on his ear becos he was accompanying his daughter on the magic carpet which meant 5 minutes or more of being exposed to the wind with no escape.
There are truckloads of local tourists who come for a day of skiing. They are uninformed (some skied in dresses), have no idea about skiing, do not pay for instructors. They are plain dangerous and a hazard to have to navigate around. The upper mountains are ok as they seldom have the skills to venture up but the icy conditions there do not change.
Their plus point - they have an efficient RFID system for the ski lifts. Some ski lifts are covered so that takes away the bitter cold.
In summary, I will never waste my time nor money on Yabuli. There are many other nicer ski resorts that cost just a little bit more.

If you flew ten hours and took a train for 3 hours to get here just to ski then you are an idiot. There are plenty of truly amazing ski areas in Japan and Korea that you can get to from Asia if you have that much time. On the other hand if you are in Harbin for the ice festival and you want to escape the city for a day it is a very pleasant trip which will also let you see some of rural northern China. We were able to charter a taxi to take 4 of us out early in the morning and back after the slopes closed. Its about a 3 hour drive and the taxi was 1000RMB round trip. Train or organized tour would have been cheaper but would only have given us about 4 hours on the slopes. Better and less expensive then when I used to rent a car and drive 8 hours from NYC to Vermont to ski! Full rental equipment plus lift ticket was $700 RMB so cheaper than almost anywhere in Colorado this year.
I grew up in Colorado and have skied in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Alaska, and all over the east coast. I would say the experience was much like some of the mid sized east coast ski areas. Very cold. Mostly hard man made snow with most runs fairly straight down the fall line. 500M vertical at Sun Mountain. About a 1000M if you count the adjacent "professional" resort but it sounds like it is often only partially open. About 4 or 5 expert runs that were mostly made difficult by the hard snow and 4 or 5 intermediate cruisers that were well groomed. These runs were almost completely empty. The 3 beginner runs were packed with Chinese learning to ski. No lift lines! I've definitely had worse days in Colorado, Maine, and Vermont.

I would like to thank the General manager of the resort for great Hospitality. We did not have any issue with Language as the hotel staffs were equipped with the mobile app with translation. We also got Veg food at the hotel. view from room overlooking mountains is great.
We got Passes for Russsian dance and song performance which was really good.
overall it was a great stay. I would recommend you to visit and stay for some days and as well do skiing .

你好 Is rental gear available at the ski area? Skies, Poles, boots, helmets? 谢谢
Skrevet 10. desember 2019
There are ski and snowboard equipment rentals available at the base. These are mainly basic equipment, performance gear, longer ski & snowboard lengths may be less easily available.

Anyone cross country/Nordic skied at Yabuli? What were the conditions? How many km of trails? Were there classic tracks?
Skrevet 11. juli 2017
Hi all, can you let me know whether Yabuli is the closest resort to Harbin that hires snowmobiles? (Not counting Songhua river). Thanks!
Skrevet 15. februar 2017
It's the largest ski resort to Harbin that lets you hire snowmobiles.

Many thanks for your helpful review. I head to Yabuli from Harbin next week. Any other insights would be appreciated. How long was the train? Is food really expensive at Yabuli? I am staying there a few nights to ski/bringing my own equipment. I've prepared for extreme cold.
Skrevet 14. januar 2017
From memory the train ride was roughly just under three hours (from the closest station in Harbin's CBD).
The food on the train wasn't marked up a lot compared to supermarkets. It mainly sells (processed food) two minute noodles, cold sausages, potatoe chips and Chinese bread. However, the food at Yabuli train station was however marked up a lot.
I only bought a Snicker bar at Yabuli ski resort for ¥10 RMB. It's ¥ 4 RMB in the supermarket. I noticed that there was a Subway other than that only Chinese restaurants.
Insights: a large percentage of the snow is artificial. If you can speak Mandarin pretend you can't to avoid getting hounded by staff. They request tips and follow you around. The chairlift is really, really slow. I can't tell you how much as it was included in the equipment hire.
I felt it was extremely cold compared to Queenstown, New Zealand. I wish I brought a ski mask with me when I went.
I recommend you pack your own snacks for the train (at least).
