We stopped by the Glaumbaer museum whilst on the northern leg of our ring road trip as we could see it on the approach and figured it was a good option to stop, stretch our legs and have a look.
The museum was around 2000ISK per person which felt a little steep but provided access to the museum and toilet facilities. The museum itself was intriguing, small turf houses (seriously mind your head) giving an interesting insight into the way the people of Iceland used to live. It was impressive how well the space was used and also how warm they are in there!
Definitely worth a stop if you are looking for something a little bit different in the area. The church next door is also well worth a look if you have time.

Very special to see how people lived in these peat houses at the time. One of the cottages is quite spacious and deep. Various utensils are arranged in display cases. The village is beautifully situated near a beautiful church for which you have to walk around. A quiet place with cemetery all around. There are also two old houses to view. In the larger house you can have a drink and eat. At entrance is a small, well-kept souvenir shop.

The Glaumbær Farm & Museum is an interesting site with a museum grounds held inside old sod houses from back in the day. There is also a tea house on site where you can grab a bite to eat. Very neat to see the houses and the museum, albeit everything here is on the pricey side, from admission to the eats at the teahouse. If history and the "old ways" is interesting to check out, you'll enjoy what's there to offer. The rest of my party thought it was interesting, but I was getting a bit bored.

As an engineer I found the construction fascinating. It always amazes me at how hard the people in that time period (late 1700's / early 1800's) had to work just to survive....especially in Iceland. Enjoyed seeing the turf-built houses and the historical artifacts within to gain an appreciation of what life was like for these people.

...we only were able to see the Houses from outside as it was still winter seasons and the museum was closed. For a Look inside you needed to ring a bell (which wasnt there) or call someone (which we didnt as it was already an amazing scenery from outside).
The church next to it and the mountains around added their beauty to it.
Parking is free and available (If the car park ist full, just park near the church and walk back for 2min.
We loved the open air part of the museum a lot. By the way: you only pay for the museum (which we havent been to).

We were here in the winter when the museum was closed so we only saw the outside.
But the location and snow-capped mountains in the background are already breathtaking. It is difficult to imagine how primitive and harsh life must have been here in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Glambauer farm remained active from 1750 to 1879 and is a beautiful example of an Icelandic agricultural community with all the facets that governed country life. The governor's house (now a museum) is
a luxury Icelandic house built in wood, but the peculiarity is the peat longhouse where, in various separate rooms, the community lived with the trades and activities necessary for its sustenance.
Blacksmith, cellar, carpentry shop, kitchens, dormitories, work rooms: all semi-underground and with peat walls and grass ceilings to insulate the rooms from the cold Icelandic winter. Beautiful visit.
Entrance fee (2000 isk) every day 10.00-18.00

A very informative (and very aesthetic) tour of traditional Icelandic habitats from different eras
To see (and don't forget the stop at the museum café)

We loved this tour! Such a unique way to experience a portion of Iceland's history. When you get a ticket, you get a brochure and you actually get to explore every room inside this sod house and see the way that the farmers who used it would have lived. If you're not into history or being mostly underground in a small house this isn't for you but we were truly impressed.

De originele turfhuisjes zijn er nog volledig ingericht zoals in de 11de eeuw, en weerspiegelen zoals men er destijds heeft geleefd. Een uurtje rondwandelen is zeker voldoende, beschouw het eerder als een tussenstop.

About how much time did you spend there (knowing you didn't go into the museum)?
Skrevet 4. mars 2019
Our tour spent about 2 hours there and it was the right amount of time. The turf houses and furnishings were amazing. It's hard to imagine how residents survived the winters. We did walk the grounds and this gave a great insight into the surrounding area. One caveat: They ask you to leave backpacks in the entrance area. Our guide intervened and they allowed me to wear the pack on the front of my body.
