Read previous reviews and agree with them.
On arrival member of staff only spoke to ask for donation.
No staff around to ask questions. The baby turtle pens were clean. Teeming with small turtles and a few larger. No one to ask when they may be released. The saddest pen was one with a very large turtle who appeared to be wanting to get out. The pen was very small compared to the size of turtle. I hope its released soon. I read that COVID had affected the Sanctuary however, they need to be more proactive to get visitors there to donate. Would I recommend a visit? If only to go and put some money into the donation box then yes. These turtles in releasing back to the wild.

I'm so happy to see the conservation work being done here. They have a lot of information about the different types of sea turtles and how to help them.

Turtles were in dirty, small ponds. Very sad to see from a conservation point of view. Some info given about turtles in general bur not much on the work the sanctuary does. Don't go out of your way to visit.

Sad conditions. Lack of funding due to covid. They need help. Ashame to lose such an important centre to take care of nature. Need fund raising and create more exciting programmes to attract visitors

Free to enter and a fairly detailed set of display boards, but it is not really a sanctuary.
We spent more time there picking up ten bags of litter outside the place. The staff were grateful for us doing this and offered us a free drink.

Extremely disappointed. Should have checked the review before going. There is no releasing turtles into the ocean experience, no touching of turtles or anything like that. Just three poorly-maintained muddy ponds with poorly visible turtles. Also, we were told to take off shoes entering the place but other than the indoor exhibition that has wooden floor, the three ponds are outside where we have to walk bare foot on wet very rough cement floor. I get the respect-the-local-culture thing, but this is not a good idea considering the pandemic now and it is painful for our feet. Another great irony is inside the exhibition we are taught to stop littering, plastic and many materials are harmful to the turtles, but right outside next to the parking, a big pile of rubbish with much plastic is found. Very embarrassing! No one seems to care about managing this place at all?

Please call before going to check if you can release baby turtles into the ocean. There are few if any opportunities to release turtles to the sea. Definitely call ahead. This sanctuary consists of three very small, shallow pools where turtles are kept for viewing. One of the biggest turtles had a large, blue flake of paint from the pool in its mouth when we first arrived. After talking in Malay to the person at the information desk we found out they ‘conserve’ baby turtles from the wild and let them mature at the facility. After about seven years they are released back into the ocean. They also rehabilitate injured turtles that are found in the wild. If you are driving from Swiss Garden or the Hyatt (just under an hour), just a heads up, the experience of viewing the turtles in the three pools takes minutes. If you love seeing animals living in the wild, this place will hurt your soul.

Hi. may I know if the centre have specific timing for releasing baby turtle activities? Because the kids might enjoy the activities, but I don't know whether should visit the place in the morning or afternoon.

Not sure about timing. However early or late avoids the heat so would be recommended!

Hi,
I am in the country at the end of January 2017 & would love to visit.
It is a good time of year to come as I understand that the east coast of Malaysia will be very wet and windy.
Do you stipp operate tours then??
Many thanks,
Shiraz

Hi Shiraz, if you want to see turtles laying eggs, it is best to visit Cherating during April to September period. There are tours available in most of the hotels here. For your information, if you want to experience turtle laying eggs, Pak Su would be one of the best person to do. He even has his own turtle sanctuary. He goes all the way out to buy and save Turtle eggs from the market and place them in his own hatchery. Very dedicated man. If you want his contact, I would be happy to give you.
Open on hari raya o not?

I do not think so. It is not the turtle season of laying eggs. Last to.e I was there was in April when it was the season. You may double check.
