This is a beautiful area. The lots are huge, the area is well maintained. There is a pool, with provided life jackets for the small children. There is lots of fishing areas. The heritage site was not open when we were there, but you can walk through the area. There are also lots of walking trails. The only issue we has was the dumping station. Very difficult to get the angle right to get close enough to dump the septic.

We stumbled across this while looking for a place to hike. The grounds were manicured and it looked like an interesting place to visit when the resort is open and operating.

Very nicely laid out pioneer village. Some short walking trails. No biking trails (which we thought were there...our fault).

This is an easy hiking area. Well marked trails and good identification of flora and fauna. Lots of options to turn back or carry on . Amazing Carolinian specimens larger than I have seen elsewhere in Ontario.

We spent two nights camping at Backus. This campground is probably the trickiest for me to review, ever, as it is great in some ways, but average or even below average in others. As it was, we (overall) enjoyed our stay, but things could have went differently. First off, we originally booked a site that looked to be good, based on photos. We did see that a lot of the sites around us were booked up, but that was ok... fast forward to the day of, when we went to look at the site - it was a lot more open than it first appeared, and although the privacy was supposedly good, it basically looked like it was a patch of grass with a sea of tents and trailers around it. We checked out another campsite, in a different area of the park that was quieter, and were able to switch - which was great.

Pros:
-some sites are fairly large and good quality, recommend you check them out before you choose the one you want
-staff clean toilets/showers/vault toilets regularly, at least twice for vaults and 3 or 4 for flush toilets
-biggest pro, which makes me give it four stars - the 'extras' offered. Firewood is delivered to campsites (yes you have to pay for firewood, but still a nice thing); lots of events and activities, such as craft times for kids; outdoor pool is free to use; pioneer village is interesting and includes a couple of tours for the mill and the house; a nice education centre is air conditioned and open to tour, and host events.
-can walk to everything if you want to.

Cons:
-no one to call at night if things get rowdy or loud. I asked at check in, and was told there was no number to call but things were usually pretty quiet and they had trucks monitoring the areas. There were no trucks at all at night. One night we were there, people stayed up, partying loud until 1 am or so. They could have stayed up all night, even until 10 am - which is when I saw the first truck appear in our area.
-bathroom and shower facilities are minimal. Some areas have vault toilets only. The Narrows, which has showers and bathrooms, have 1 shower for men, 1 shower for women. 1 toilet for men, 1 toilet for women. It services a large area, and to have only 2 flushing toilets and a vault toilet or two is not much for the area.

There is something for everyone at Backus. There are many different events that take place over the year and it's great for a family day away.

The War of 1812 Re-Enactment is held in early September, this is a must see. Great for those attending to learn more about this historic battle. Period costumes are worn, there is a doctor dressed in the attire of the day and will show you the medical instruments used back in that era. They are primitive looking in my opinion to say the least.

The participants are willing to answer questions, take a wagon ride, stroll through the park, and be sure to visit the working grist mill built in 1798 and see how flour was ground over 200 years ago. You can camp and fish here as well.

Close by to lakeside communities of Park Rowan and Long Point.

We stayed two nights in one of the two cabins in the campground area of Backus. Very clean place with friendly staff. Be aware that the cabin comes with no mattresses although it sleeps 6. Bring your own air mattress. Washroom was in a separate building, 5 minute walk away. Bring all your own utensils, plates, etc. Town of Port Rowan is nearby. Backus has a heritage village on site plus a nature interpretive center. Lots of hiking, cycling and fishing opportunities. Beach at Long Point is a 15 minute drive away.

We arrived well before noon on Sunday Aug 28th for day 2 of the Bluegrass Jamboree (advertised hours 10-2), only to find no music which was greatly disappointing. Garrett (?) at the mill was the only interpreter in period dress. He was excellent at explaining the workings of the mill, which was fascinating to see - the best part of village! The staff could have been a bit more welcoming and informative.

Backus Heritage Conservation Area is a conservation area in Norfolk County near Port Rowan featuring a campground (160 sites over five campgrounds), the Backhouse Mill, an education centre, and a heritage village. Backhouse Mill is a water powered gristmill built in 1798 notable for surviving the War of 1812. The mill operated until 1957 and is now a National Historic Site. Buckus Mill Conservation Education Centre contains exhibits showcasing the area's natural history (plants, birds, and animals common to the Long Point Region) and waterfowling traditions. Structures (15 in total) restored or reconstructed in the heritage village include the 19th century Backhouse Homestead, a church, a carriage shop, a barn (complete with agriculture equipment), a drive shed (complete with buggies and wagons), two log houses, an octagonal schoolhouse, and a saw mill. Be sure to check out the Weaving Shop for a live weaving demonstration. There is also a "Museum Building" within the village featuring exhibits on the Long Point area, businesses of the 19th century, and Lake Erie shipwrecks worth seeing. A visit to Backus Heritage Conservation Area takes 3-5 hours and costs $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $3.50 for children. With the exception of the campground, the park operates Wednesday to Sunday (11:00 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon) from July 1st through to Labour Day. Food and drink is NOT available for purchase anywhere in the park. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and a hat. And be sure to bring plenty of water! Backus Heritage Conservation Area is where history meets nature.
