The well is located in the lower level inside a beautiful Orthodox church. The arts done by the monk who are still living there are amazing. The monk is friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, my experience was tainted by a sour looking gate keeper who was concerned about me buying the souvenirs before I left as a “donation”. I’m pretty sure the tour agency I hired had already made arrangement with him, otherwise he would not have opened the church for visitors. Photos taking of the well was forbidden by him, even though a group in front of me took pictures before; there is no sign of that is not allowed. I was confused; especially before my visit, I checked reviews on tripadvisor and some of members posted photos of the well. If you have plenty of time, a history buff, or think it’s really important to touch the well where Jesus talked to a Samaritan woman, and yes, it’s worth of drive to visit the well- the city itself is not much to see. But beware, that you will be “encouraged” to buy souvenirs as a form of donation. On the side of the token, Nablus is very famous for its kunefes (sweet pastry) so be sure to stop by at one of the cafes to try them. You won’t regret it.

Un luogo bellissimo seguito, curato e valorizzato come giusto che sia da un Monaco greco ortodosso.
Tuto quello che si vede all interno del santuario, è di prelievo le valore artistico e religioso. Da vedere anche se per arrivare in quel posto la suggestione è tanta.

A must see in Palestine. Jacobs Well — Jacob and the twelve tribes — his well is here. The original. There is a monk there for 40 yrs who has done the paintings in the lower level by the well. Go there. See all of it. Beautiful and worth every minute.

The Well in the grotto is just amazing. Meditating down there was something I will never forget. The Monk sitting nearby sells wonderful religious items.
I feel the gentleman upstairs at the shop was so knowledgeable about all the icons around the Church that it was a pity that he could not take time out to show us around the icons and talk in detail.

Grande chiesa di rito ortodosso costruita sul cosiddetto "pozzo di Giacobbe", visibile in una cripta sotto la chiesa. Luogo ben tenuto con interessanti resti di epoca bizantina. Simpatico il parroco, molto anziano, che si è fatto costruire da molto tempo la sua tomba a lato dell'ingresso. Vale la pena fare una deviazione per vedere questo luogo.

The church is beautiful! All of the artwork in the building is painted by the monk who works there. Under the altar area are steps that take you into the crypt where the well is located. You can bring the bucket up from the well and drink the water which is said to be holy.

definitely worth a stop. Beautiful Greek Orthodox Church that has been the site of numerous attacks by people who think the site should not be Christian. Present monk has done virtually all of the icon writing, mosaic work, etc. that you see on site. beautiful and historically important. If the monk is there he speaks both Arabic and Greek. Bathrooms are on site but not well kept.

This is a beautiful church to visit. Church of St Photina. Well worth the trip. Jacobs Well is on the lower lever - down the steps. The monk who has been there for 40 yrs painted all the art in the room. Incredible. Safe travels.

Can you please let me know how you went to Jacob's well. Did you have a guide, if so can you reccomend him. Or did you go in public transport if so from where did you get the transport. I also assume your not based in holy land🙂

We went on Pilgrimage with the Equestrian Order of The Holy Sepulchre from the UK. We felt completely safe at all times. The icons were painted by the elderly Monk who sits at The Well in the basement of the Church where he sells some of his smaller works. I bought a beautiful crucifix with some water from the well enclosed in he cross.

I went to Palestine with a tour group so I did not have issues with cars. I do recall that there are certain roads that Israeli licenses plates can drive on and certain roads that they cannot when entering into the West Bank. There are check points going into the West Bank where cars are kept from entering without proper plates. Leaving Palestine to travel to Tel Aviv airport, we were stopped and our passports were checked by the Israeli soldiers.

It is very easy to get there. In the city center there is the central shared taxi building, from where you can take a shared taxi of 4 passengers. It goes to Balata camp, just tell the taxi driver that you want to go to Jacob well. You will pay 2.5 NIS only.
In the street, you can ask anyone about the location of taxi going to Balata camp, they will tell you where to go.
