Our driver-cum-guide, Dashem Lyngdoh, made our trip to Meghalaya absolutely unforgettable! He was not only an excellent driver, navigating the roads with ease, but also a knowledgeable and engaging guide who shared fascinating insights about the local culture, history, and hidden gems.

You went above and beyond to ensure our vacation was stress-free and truly unforgettable (specially the double decker trek which would have not been possible with our little one without your support and guidance)

Kudos to @dashemlyngdoh for making it a memory for a lifetime!!

We'll definitely be recommending you to friends and family for future travel plans.

The hike to the double dekker root bridge was a fun and beautiful experience on my 5-day travels through Meghalaya!
We took the challenge to include the rainbow falls. Therefore it took us from morning till afternoon to complete the hike, with an sufficient amount to breaks to relax and enjoy the the beautiful nature places (like root bridges, blue lagoon, more bridges, rainbow fall, betel nut forest, ...).
You can get food and fresh lemon juice along the trek, which especially helps completing the 3500 steps from the double dekker root bridge back to the start.
I was accompagnied by Dashem, who drove, suggested the stays and came up with a nice itinerary including less frequented places. If you are looking for a local and reliable guide, you can contact him via insta dashemlyngdoh_007 or travel_with_the_buddies. With his positive and uncomplicated way as well as good connections and a lot of knowledge on the local culture it was a very enjoyable time!

This wonder was always on my list to see.
Am happy and proud of my achievement, yes I call it an achievement 😁.

This is a good 3,500 steps down & then 3,500 back to the parking lot.

My personal tips to make your journey better.

1. Start early . Try to reach the start point by 8 -9 am . It took me at a slow pace a good two half hours.
2. Do proper warm up and stretch before you start.
3. Proper walking shoes snd walking stick a must ( stick can be taken on hire at the entrance for rs.20)
4. Apply sunblock & carry sunhat & sunglasses.
5. Carry some snacks like chocolate , dates , nuts and water. There are small shops along the way where you can try the fresh lemon juice and local fruits .
6. Keep your back pack light. Depending on the month you may need to wear a sweat shirt .
7. Do dip your feet in the little pool just below the root bridge . So carry a small towel. We enjoyed a bowl of maggi whilst we did that .
8. Rest for an hour and start the return as that takes longer than the way down.
9. Not a trip for children or elderly folks and those with knee or asthma issues.

This is an awesome place to visit, but it also has challenges. One has to be mindful of situational awareness.

I went with my son, who has the agility to scale the bottom effortlessly. My exhaustion and perspiration did not deter me from seeing the Blue Lagoon. As I got encouragement from my son, I ensured I was not carried on someone's back.

It was around 4 hour's trip but the most important during this journey was to hydrate self. After going past the bridges there is a football ground where the locals enjoy their game. A life with electronic media gives people all the time in the world to enjoy the environment and the people living in the village live a very simple life.

The journey is painful but is worth a trip.

We went on 30th of December 2024 . As it was Monday it was extremely crowded because Sunday it is closed for tourist. I was very disappointed to see the amount of plastics, wrappers thrown. I would request the government to find a way to reduce it. Deploy lot of dustbins so that the people are forced to throw in the dustbin. More sustainable practices should be followed or else it will end it into disaster.

The most searched thing on Google when it comes to traveling in Meghalaya and rightly so. It's just breathtakingly beautiful and is definitely one of the must dos in Meghalaya.

So the story goes, the Khasi tribe inhabiting the region planted Ficus Elastica on either side of the bank. The roots were made to grow across the river and over a course of period, the folks guided the roots of the trees across bamboo scaffolding creating an ingenious way to connect different villages. Considering that the roots keep growing, the bridge actually gained strength over a period of time.

This is marvellous to say to the least, and demonstrates resourceful nature of Khasi people, as they created a bridge, specifically, at a location where bringing any construction material is really difficult (given the remote area).

We started our trek from Tryna with our local guide and driver, Banshan Lyngdoh, who is from Mawphlong village, known for its Davis Scott Trail and Sacred Forests. Luckily, the weather god was kind on us and it did not rain that day. While the trail is completely paved, it helps if it is not raining as you can stop and really admire the forest in its glory - the foliage, dense undergrowth, different types of mushrooms and bay leaf trees - even moths are colourful (cobalt blue, and in colour of an orange marmalade) and beautiful that you can easily mistake them for butterflies.

So the trail involves climbing up and down the steps. We did not count the number of steps but it is believed to be approximately 3500 one way. Approximately after one hour 30 minutes, you will reach the single root bridge. It is a beautiful route through villages and you will find water and snacks easily. Will recommend eating the locally grown pineapples.

Then after crossing two more streams over two suspension bridges, you reach Nongriat village, where the double decker bridge is located. The water under the bridge was turquoise in color and I just could not stop admiring it.

Once you reach the double decker root bridge, you can now soak your feet in the stream (after your walk on the bridge) and applaud this beauty - the work product of harmony between nature and human.

Would recommend starting the trek as early as possible, as it does get a little crowded and you would want to avoid the crowd to get the best experience, and if you would like to take a dip in the natural swimming pool (also called Blue Lagoon), do carry change of clothes or quick dry clothes.

Do note that there are many living root bridges in Meghalaya.

Banshan (8837423443, Whatsapp: 9615884289) was so patient with us and went out of his way to ensure that we are not troubled and are having a good time. His great tip of sipping on ORS came in handy as I surprised myself when I completed the trek without dying. He was encouraging throughout and also showed us a fair number of offbeat places.

It’s going to be an exhausting longggg trek comprising of 3500 steps to and fro. If you’re really a pro trek guy and wants to never miss it, then you can go. It will take roughly 6 hours to complete and the worst part is , it’s not like traditional trek where u climb mountains or walk through stone filled paths. It’s just stairs , but lots of stairs to climb down and climb up. No much walking , so your legs will give up for the rest of the trip. Instead I would recommend you to visit a similar root bridge near Mawlynong, which takes only 30 mins to reach and it’s very much easy. And it’s mostly similar, but you can’t tell others, I did 7000 steps ! What a trek!

The Double root bridge is Nature's Marvel and must go if your health allows. The trek to bridge is via 3500 stairs (mostly not assisted with railing) and two suspension bridges and same while coming back.

It was hot and humid day and we started around 10 AM finished by 3 PM. Both of us 44 years of age and city lifestyle had fairly no issues while reaching bridge. Take occasional breaks, keep yourself hydrated, munch if required and enjoy nature at its best.

There are shops on the way selling water/juice/maggie/chips etc so no need to carry too much along. Guide and sticks are available at the start, if required. We did not buy any. Do apply sunscreen and mosquito repellant cream. Wear comfortable shoes and light clothes.

We are back from a lovely trip to the double decker root bridges. We had an absolutely amazing time.
We started on Day 1 at about 8.30 AM. The walk to the bridge is almost all downward. It took about 1 hour 45 minutes after stopping along the way for the single decker bridge, which is beautiful too . We dropped the heaver backpacks at Serene Home stay, where we were booked for the night and then proceeded to the root bridges with water and snacks. After spending 10 to 15 minutes at the root bridges, we proceeded to the Rainbow Falls, which are absolutely mesmerizing.
The walk to rainbow falls was about 1 hour 20 minutes, mainly uphill, so advisable if you are in good physical health. Though uphill, the locals have added railings and steps so definitely do able.
After spending some time at the falls we headed back and spent some time at the blue lagoon which is another gem. Carry a change of clothes. There is a small shack to change if you want to. They also give life jackets which are compulsory at the lagoon.
We stayed the night at Serene Home stay which is basic but clean. Their meals are good. Lights do go off. So carry mosquito repellents. You can keep the windows open at night.
The good thing about staying at the home stay in Nongriat is that you have the root bridge all to yourself in the evening and early morning when the crowds are not there. The walking back to the starting point was 1 hour 20 minutes next morning.
A few tips - exercise a bit mainly stairs before going, take a walking stick from the starting point, available on rent for Rs 20, carry atleast 1 litre water each person.
