Meghalaya's Double Decker Root Bridge is a natural wonder located in the rainforests. To reach it, visitors must climb over 3500 stairs, which can take around 2 hours. There's also an option to visit a single-decker root bridge, adding an extra 10 to 15 minutes to the journey. Along the way, there is a sacred garden, and the surrounding rainforest is a notable feature.
It's important to note that the bridge is closed on Sundays. While hiring a guide is not mandatory, it is advisable as the trek can be confusing due to multiple diversions. The steepness of the stairs can be challenging, with some reaching a 60° incline.
Visitors must purchase tickets at the entrance, where they can also find vendors selling fruits and snacks. For those seeking more adventure, there is an additional 3000 stairs to Rainbow Falls.
Starting the descent early is recommended as there are no lights after sunset, making it difficult to navigate. The local villagers play a vital role in maintaining the area and are known for their hospitality.

The double-decker living root bridge is huge and truly amazing. The roots are thick enough to hold people’s weight and allow them to cross. Their exact origin is not known but is believed to be centuries old.
There is a small pool nearby where you can rest and admire the root bridge. Besides the root bridge, there is a small shop where they sell Maggi noodles, coffee, and snacks.
The trek difficulty level is moderate. So be prepared mentally. We visited on December 2021.

They see it is about 350 steps from the base however did seem a bit more! The stepped trail would take you up and then down and then sometimes just level....more like a roller coaster of steps! Best way to plan for it would be to stay nearby overnight in a homestay and subsequently go to rainbow falls, while experiencing the 'Blue Lagoon' midway between double decker and rainbow falls. All in all, its worth a visit!
Tip: would be advisable to hire a guide for the trip.

The double decker living root bridge is one of a kind attraction of Meghalay. The trek to bridge is almost 3km long and 3500+ steps. Going down is easier, but return is more tiring. It takes whole day, but worth seeing once.

The place has approach from 2- 3 different places. Go to a place name utarna village( rough name) and park your bike / car there. DON'T FOLLOW GOOGLE MAP TO REACH DOUBLE DECKER BRIDGE. It will guide you to worst place for trekking . It will guide you to a village moolah(rough name) and the trekking from from that place is disaster. It is a very high down slopes with less stares and more stony path way. In this trekking you have to climb around 3500 stares and 4000 stones ...On descending it will take around 2 hours but returning is hell , it will take around 3.5 to 5 hours and your legs will be ooops. Real test your inner strength and stemina.....So start early in the morning since This trekking will take whole day..Never go with small children and old parents. To enjoy that place consult locals how to reach utarna village. From there also trekking is tough but people said it wasl all stares so little bit easy. The place is naturally beautiful. Very relaxing Super chilled water. Feels awesome when fishes gives small pinches in your legs...It is a full one day consuming trekking. So plan accordingly.Start early in the morning so that you can finish it before sunset.

Must Visit Place in Meghalaya. This is one of location u should never miss. Went to location in October 1st week 2022. It was tiring but worthy. Coming down to around 4000 steps in valley this is naturally made double decker root bridge is really awesome with addition to it a small water fall and natural pool with small fishes will give u foot massage.
While travelling to double decker bridge i suggest to go early in the morning around 5-7am. Because it will take around 2 hours to go down.[ No other transportation available]. at around 3000 step coming down u will get diversion for longest single root bridge which is also amazing. Then u have u climb around 500-700 up side to reach the double decker bridge.
This is once in lifetime journey so enjoy each and every moment. While coming back up for around 4000 steps i suggest to start early around 7am in cool climate.
I also suggest to keep hydrated properly. We reached the top in 1 hour 35 min which was fast. We kept our-self properly hydrated. in breakfast we took only bread jam or bread butter which gives u good carbs. we also had 1 ltrs of electrol water[ with 4 of us ] and glucose powder and water for each of us. While climbing upside i suggest to walk in single pace don't hurry or slow down. if u keep in single pace in relaxed mode u will get momentum of ur body and u will not get exhausted.
By seeing this is is rightly said as " Gods own Garden "

The bridge is near a very small village - Nongriat - which is located deep inside a valley. From the street level parking near Sohra(about 55km from Shillong) - you have to climb down 3000/3500 steps into a wide green valley with no habitat till you reach Nongriat, except for a few shacks offering water, fresh pineapple, fresh orange juice and some biscuits/chips. Once you go about 50 steps down - you feel cut off from the world and totally immersed in peaceful greenery. Far away you can see some of the famed falls of the region - but we had visited in Dec, so they were but a trickle. Winter offers respite from rains and the tracks are dry. The steps are low, properly cemented and with rails in many places - so not very difficult to descend. On the way we came across one single decker bridge and had to cross over some boulders in a small stream. Once at the bridge, one can get some refresments and use of a toilet. The bridges were built by local people by training aerial roots of Rubber trees through hollow stems of fallen beetle nut trees - an amazing work of patient engineering with nature that is sustainable. These bridges are taken care of on an on going basis by local people and have been around for over a hundren year. There is a small pool of water at the point - water from a gushing stream collected in an enclosure - where one can rest tired feet. Little fishes peck at your feet - quite amusing!! To spend the night at Nongriat, one needs to book in advance. There are very few homestays available. One can pitch tents too. One can also carry on for a further 2.5/3kms to Blue Lagoon and Rainbow falls - but that's a much tougher route. Mind you, road back to the carpark is up the same flight of 3000 steps. Its daylight by 5/5.30 am - advice - start early!!

One must have "will power" to go down 3500 steps with little courage to climb up the same steps.
The place is extra ordinary.
There is a ticket plus charges for still and movie camera.
For photography, please start decent at 6am or else place gets crowdy or night stay to various home stays.
It takes 2 hours to go down and more than 3 or 3.5 hours to climb up in phases.
Take stick with you to support your trek/ journey.
Natural, double decker tree root bridge is a must to see attraction if you are visiting Meghalaya.

Long trek but worth it. Be sure to wear good footwear. Take some swimming shorts if you want to swim on the way.

Hi, I am planning a trip with all my friends (all boys), to Shillong side from Delhi in the last week of December this year for 5 days.
1. we aren't able to estimate our expected costs per person as we want a trip on a friendly budget.
2. We'll visit other than Shillong Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawlynnong and some more nearby points.
3. Is it worth visiting in the last week of December to enjoy waterfalls also?
4.
Hi, I am planning 5 N 6 D trip to meghalaya. I query is do I need to stay over night in every place I visit from shillong Or I can return back to Shilong to stay over night and next day go for another place??

What all do you plan to see? Meghalaya is a very diverse State. You could spend 2 N in Shillong ( various things to see around Shillong) , 2 N in Sohra(Cherapunji) - for the many waterfalls, root bridges, Dawki, caves - and then a night back to Shillong since airport/train station will probably be Guwahati.
Does it stay open in August?

As mentioned by others, it all depends on the level of physical activity your kids are exposed to. To add on, there are porters available at the start of trek if you wish your 5 year old to be carried for the entire stretch of the trek. For my 2.5 yr old daughter, I have engaged a porter at INR 3000 for Double Decker trek (Day-1) & Rainbow Falls trek (Day-2).
