If you are one of the people coming over to the dam after having seen articles in various newspapers about it having the highest beach in England. Dont bother. Its a dam not the seaside. Its very cold even in summer, its not the sea so whatever is in it stays in it...there are no toilets and all those hundreds and hundreds of people who try and cram onto 10sqm of gravely sand must go somewhere. Have a long think about what happens to human waste up there. The same catchment area feeds into a reservoir that serves Manchester....some of you will walk past it on your way to the dam. Think on.
FYI, local farmers also allow thier cows access to the dam ...in summer its a good source of drinking water for them... Cows and bulls being cows and bulls also foul where they stand, it makes for a heady brew.
Its also on the top of a hill so its quite a walk up too and parking is dreadful. Narrow roads double yellows and angry locals.
If you do decide to visit it please take all your litter and excrement away with you. There are no bins, there is no one but the locals who keep the dam and surrounding area clean and tidy. It isnt ok to leave your little bag of doggy poop hanging from a bush on your way down and it isnt ok to cram fish and chip wrappers or McDonalds wrappings into a convienant dry stone wall on your way up. Its up to you to take responsibility for your and your families waste. Do not leave it for others to sort out. And as for BBQ's give your heads a shake. The area is fragile, in summer its a tinderbox, dry and windy with fuel a plenty, it being a peat moor. Even if you are careful the residual heat transferred from the bottom of your BBQ could set fire to the peat below the surface without you even realising it has done so. And if you do meet an annoyed local....they do have good reason to be annoyed with how the fragile historical and nature of the area is being abused by folk who are stupid enough to think its Blackpool and treat the place as if the council send a team up to clean it every evening... They do not of course. Anything left there stays there. So if you must visit please treat the area with respect and a degree of common sense. ..... make sure you take yourself off to hospital should you swallow any of the water....cholera is a dreadful death.

We often come here for a wild swim but this was our first time paddle boarding. We visited on a quiet Monday morning. We parked near the Shepherd’s Rest Inn and made our way through the gate and up the steep climb to the top of the moor. It was quite a grueller with the paddle board bag on our back but worth it. The views at the top are gorgeous. The water was clear and a lovely temperature, it’s really warming up at this time of year. We stayed for a few hours and as we were leaving at around 12ish it started to get busier. I’d always recommend going early and on a week day if possible. Sometimes if you get it to yourself it’s just perfection!

We took the easy route up from the White House Inn and the views were stunning. We have had mixed reviews from others who have visited some great some not but when we got to the little beach and it is little, we were pleasantly surprised. Perfectly formed with soft clean sand lovingly cared for and a delight to visit. The sun was out which attracted a few brave souls to have a dip in the clear water…we left that bit to our pooches Pippa and Eric 😂. Overall a great place to visit 👍

Quite a hike but stunning and unique views. There are two routes, one easy and one more challenging and dangerous.

I read that this was the highest beach in England but that it was actually a small muddy area that was often submerged. I can tell you this is definitely the highest beach in England The sand is soft on your feet 🦶 and fairly Sandy in colour, quite rocky to walk into the water, but if you walk in on the right hand side it’s softer. The water is very clean and perfect for swimming 🏊♀️ take your picnic, and enjoy this beautiful spot.

Some of these other reviews are making me laugh! Where did you think you were going?
Gaddings Dam is a fab place to go for a walk, swim, and picnic. It's a lovely walk to get there (there are a few routes up so you can choose the best way for your group - there is parking in nearby Todmorden but it will be a longer walk from there, nice route though!)
It is a great swimming spot and after a couple of sunny days the water is a very nice temp! Of course it is wild swimming so necessary precautions should be taken (the Gaddings Dam website gives good advice). A lovely spot to stop off if you're heading off on a longer walk too.
It's well maintained, massive thanks to the Gaddings Dam Friends group and volunteers who look after the Dam.
There aren't any toilets or other facilities but not sure where that idea has come from, it's literally a disused Dam on the moors (not a holiday village!)
All in all a fab day out and a great spot for a regular wild swim if you live local. Head to Hollingworth Lake in Littleborough if you're looking for toilets, car parks and hot dogs :)

If you want to climb a steep hill for a mile to find a small reservoir with about 10 square feet of “beach” and then break your necks going back down the hill again, this is for you. Leave granny and the pushchair at home (unless granny’s mentioned you in her will).

a long hard walk to top of the hill but the views are worth it. Only a small piece of sand but you can sit all around the dam. We went on very hot day so a lot of people swimming. Came down the easy way which is to the right as you look at the hill. Took half hour longer to get down but so much easier. Loved it

Well after reading the reviews we was unsure what to expect .. firstly people need to remember it’s not Blackpool. It’s a little spot hidden away.
It’s a fab walk up a very steep hill firstly. So be expected to keep walking and walking and walking.
We thought we was never going to get their ha. We didn’t realise their was two ways up , we took the long hard route up ( which we enjoyed ) and on our way down we took the short route and that route was easier for the children that was climbing up and people who would like a softer route up.
So firstly yes parking , we was shocked their is limited parking but not 3/4 spaces like some have said their was 8 cars parked and prob room for little more. The houses located next to the dam and pub are beautiful, be polite and say hello you are in their neighbourhood and show respect like you we would like.
Granted we came on a cold day and it was fairly busy so I can only Imagine what it’s like on a warm summer day. It was very clean no litter no cigarettes butts but lots of sheep poo ha ha.
Once your at the top wow you won’t be disappointed, I was very surprised when reaching the little beach area, we sat down and just looked at the little stretch of hidden beach. It was very foggy so we couldn’t see far but what we could we loved.
All in all great walk , great views and lovely afternoon for a couples walk.

Can you have a bbq on the sand?
BeckySimpson
Manchester, UK23 bidrag
No, please don't. This is Moorland and it's illegal to take BBQs. This isn't a beach but a small bit of sand on the edge of a reservoir. Ignore what the idiot media tells you!

Are you allowed to swim in the reservoir (assuming it’s blue/ green algae free that day)
Michelle D
Bradford, UK8 bidrag
Yes, you are allowed to swim in the dam.
Hi, is scuba or freediving allowed here at all? It’s the perfect place for a quiet sheltered practice dive! 😃
Michelle D
Bradford, UK8 bidrag
I’d be wary of blue green algae. It’s also a long trek with heavy scuba gear as there are no access roads.

Yes - we took ours on a lead. No problem.
Is it suitable for kayaking?
PerfectlyPurplePatty
Yorkshire, UK9 bidrag
no. not unless you can carry a kayak up a steep, rocky slope for half an hour. and that's assuming you can park at the bottom of the hill, which on a nice day you won't be able to. the water is very deep and extremely cold, and not suitable for swimming

Anywhere to camp nearby?
Amy W
Manchester, UK168 bidrag
There aren't any camp sites around. The fields you have to travel through to get to gaddings dam belong to farmers and most have animals in.
How long does it take to walk from shepherds pub to the dam
Amy W
Manchester, UK168 bidrag
Depends on the person. Possibly about half an hourish.
