We visited in March 2024: autumn is a great time for a visit as the intense Patagonian winds are gone and the climate is cooler. Long hike, ascending most of the time, but nothing technically challenging or too steep, and no exposure (I'm petrified of heights and had zero fears on this hike). Really easy to do yourself. Pack light, but with enough water (at least 2L per person), because its a long journey and the descent back can feel endless at times. When you reach the base of the towers, wait around for the sun to appear if its shrouded in clouds. 1-2 mins makes all the difference up in the mountains: the sun comes out of nowhere and you'll be rewarded with the picture perfect view!

Trail with medium to high difficulty, depending on your physical preparation it may be more difficult. It starts at the welcome center near the Las Torres hotel. It's 22km round trip, we did it in a net time of 8h. Allow 10 hours, counting the stops and the time you will spend up there. The beginning is a constant climb and then a descent to the Chilean Refuge. From there, woods with a slight climb and a final stretch with a steep climb between rocks. In this part we saw falling snow (February/2024). Arriving at the top, the weather is closed. You have to wait, the weather changes every minute. And that happened, clouds opened and the towers appeared. Incredible scenery. Mandatory trail.

One of the best hikes I’ve done. We were very tight on time for our Chile/Argentina trip, so we couldn’t do the O or the W. This hike was totally worth the trip down to Patagonia.
Some notes:
-You can definitely get here using the bus system. We were on the 7:05 AM bus and returned on the 8:10 PM bus. All buses run on Chilean time, so be prepared for them to be late, but this hike was totally doable without a rental car.
-This hike was difficult, but we saw all levels of people doing it. I’d say it’s the same level
If difficult as Mount Washington in New Hampshire if anyone has done that. It’s hard, for sure. But, you should be able to do it.
-I was thankful that I rented poles in town for 5,000p. They saved my knees on the way down. I hiked in sneakers, no problem.
-We lucked out an had incredible weather. 50 degrees, not a cloud in sky.
-Prepare for lots of waiting around. You have to take a bus, to a mini bus, then wait at the cafe at bottom at end of day for first PM minibus which doesn’t leave until 6:30 PM.
-Water available along the trail.

This hike is challenging and as others have mentioned, those not already in good shape should train before attempting it. The average tourist could easily injure themselves. We know someone who could not make it to the top, and met another person who gave up on the next two days of their stay in the park because they found this hike too difficult - all a shame having come so far. The views of the towers are spectacular, but if you are from North America and have access to the Rockies, it is not worth the trip to Chilean Patagonia to ONLY hike this trail - hiking the full W will give you a much more thorough overview of the geologic and botanic diversity of Patagonia (glacial outwash plains, igneous sills and dikes, hanging glaciers, etc). Again, for the North Americans, the views on this particular hike are equivalent to any of the longer day hikes in Banff or Glacier National Park (eg., the Iceberg Lake Trail), and those hikes are much easier in terms of elevation gain over distance. Visiting Patagonia is a "go big or go home" destination - do the full W, otherwise you are seeing a very limited portion of the park. We did the W-trek and this was the least impressive hike. Would not recommend people travel all the way here to ONLY do this trail - stay longer and hike more!
Also, there were a few children on the trail. The winds in Patagonia can be in excess of 80km/hr (50 mph) - this can pick up small children and blow them off the side of the mountain. I would not recommend bringing children here. In volatile weather it is dangerous for unfit adults and even more so young children.

We drove from Puerto Natales to Laguna Amarga entrance. Be sure to beat the bus crowds. Most of the buses from Puerto Natales leaves to the park around 7-7:45 AM. Also, fuel up before you go to the park. There are no gas stations within the boundary of the park.
Once you reach the Laguna Amarga entrance, get your tickets and drive towards hotel Los Torres. You can’t miss that road since the shuttles keep driving back and forth. There is a welcome center with refreshments and a bathroom. It is extremely clean. Also please wear layers. As you climb you will sweat and may need to take the warmer layers off. The sun is intense so don’t forget your sunscreen. Sneakers are doable but highly suggest hiking shoes especially for the rocky terrain and the grip.
The hike walk from the welcome center to the Hotel is along the gravel road that goes to the hotel. Nothing here. Once you reach the hotel that is where the hiking trail starts to mirador Los Torres. However if the weather is clear you will be able to see the columns peaking out of the mountains. We were lucky to spot a puma roaming around.
The first 2-3 km of the hike is a gentle uphill climb. Take your time. There are some rocky areas but very manageable. You will then reach the windy valley lookout. Don’t underestimate the winds. It was brutal but a welcome one after a sweaty first hour :)
From that point on, it is gentle up and down crushed gravel path to the refuge center. The hiking map suggests 2 hours till this point. If you are reasonably fit, you should be able to easily make that time.
We decided to keep going and not wait at the refuge center. By now the crowds thin out and also spreads out. The next part of the hike goes through the forests. Once in a while the hike will open up into a clearance where you can see the mountains. This part of the hike will give you from the sun since the others are quite exposed.
The last part of the forest has some rocks to navigate but nothing bad. Pretty much most of the people should be able navigate this.
Take a little breather if need be, since the last section of the hike will be before you. Till now you will not be able to see the columns and right in front there will be a steep rocky section. This is the most difficult part of the hike. Tread slowly and you can generally follow the people in front of you. Just be careful of people coming by from the opposite side yo get a strong footing. Although the trail gives you a general direction you find your own footing in the rocky section.
The three columns opens up and at that point you will definitely feel the hike was well worth it. The typical Patagonia picture that you see in advertisements is before you. I’m sure the view varies when it’s cloudy and clear. We were lucky that the clouds cleared up. In any case the hike is a must when you visit Torres del Paine.
You can spend your lunch time here, take pictures. Find some refuge behind some rocks yo shield from the sun and just enjoy the site.
The climb down is relatively easy but here is where your knees can take a beating. If you have hiking poles it helps tremendously. Don’t be shy to use your hands to support while you climb down the rocky section. After that it is an easy descent.
We stopped down at the refuge station grabbed some fluids. You will see campers here drinking beer which is also a lot of fun. The rest of the section should be fairly simple till you reach the parking lot.
Overall you will feel tired but for athletic folks this shouldn’t be a problem at all. There are 55+ year olds that climbed all the way to the top.

Hike from the parking lot and reception area is about 22 miles roundtrip. Not for the faint hearted as the last 1/4, or so, is up dry stream beds full of boulders and quite steep.
Getting there you are rewarded with a spectacular view which is very peaceful and serene.

Horse ride up and down into Refugio Chileno, how much does it cost for one trip. Many thanks. Can someone tell me if end of March is good to hike Mirador Torres ?
Skrevet 7. januar 2020
I remember I asked about it when coming down from Mirador. They said it is 90 usd but had to wait for the horse to come up from Las Torres.

Does anyone have the GPS coordinates of the parking lot for this hike?
Skrevet 28. oktober 2019
Obrigada

Hi all. Due to some physical conditions we are not able to hike long distances. Is it possible to explore the Torres Del Paine park by car?
Skrevet 15. september 2018
Yes, that is very much possible. You can for example visit amazing viewpoints, and go to glacier Grey by boat. The main road gives great views on the mountains, and there are some road branches to explore as well.

Hello, I am intending to visit Mirador Las Torres in April 2019. Due to my limited time, I will be travelling down to Punta Arenas by plane, for two and a half days.
From Punta Arenas is the trail head to Mirador Las Torres accessible by public transport?... the hike is possible to do as a day trip?
Is there any accomodation to stay at near the trail head for Mirador Las Torres?
Thank you in advance for your responses.
Skrevet 9. juli 2018
I know that some people book day trips from Puntas Arenas to hike to Mirador, but that would be a very, very long day and I would not recommend it. You could stay in Hotel las Torres Patagonia which is right path the trail head. On how to get there you can probably best contact the hotel.
By all means find a way to go. It's a magnificent hike, and if you're staying at that hotel, leave early, possibly before dawn. Bear in mind that it can be freezing in April with snow conditions as well.
