I, 58 years old, did the classic W circuit of 5 nights and 6 days alone.
*I started from Refugio Central, base of Torres, Refugio Central (day 1);
*Central Refuge to French Refuge (day 2);
*French Refuge to the Italian camp (leave the 60L backpack with Lunch Box / exchange for the attack backpack), go to the French and British Viewpoints, return to the Italian, take a 60L backpack (have lunch) and walk to the Paine Grande Refuge. Great distance that day (day 3);
*Refugio Paine Grande to Paine Grande viewpoint (2-hour round trip) after breakfast, return to the refuge for lunch and depart for Refugio Gray (day 4);
*Refugio Gray to the second suspension bridge which is the highest and longest, walk another 10 minutes to the Gray Glacier viewpoint (8.5 km round trip), some photos around and have dinner (second night here / day 5);
*Refugio Gray around for some photographs. Have lunch at the refuge. Board the catamaran at 2pm at Gray beach (27 minutes or 720 meters) to see the Gray glacier and disembark at the Gray hotel. Tour lasts 1h:45m including a bar, bathroom and a pisco sour with ice from the glacier. Disembark and walk about 20 minutes to the restaurant/market/parking lot where the last Bus-Sur bus picks us up at 5pm and departs for Puerto Natales, in my case (the 6th and final).
Note: You have to be physically and mentally prepared. I had already cycled from January 1st, 2024 to April 19th, 2024, 5,200 km. It's not a walk in the park. I walked 150 km in the park, as I took some alternative routes. In fact, the W trail is 71 km over 4/5 days. There is the inverted W route (turn the W and make it an M - start on the first leg of the M and end at the iconic Torres del Paine).

We took the trip with Las Torres Patagonia while doing the W express circuit. It is a lifetime experience, if you like hiking and nature this is a must that you need to take. It’s a very defiant experience but it’s worth every minute of it.

It is a great way to explore the park fully. It's about level 2 difficulty in average in good days, but up to level 3 when there are windy days.

Doing the W Trek over 5 days / 4 nights was one of the great experiences of my life. The scenery is stunning. Doing the full trek as opposed to day hikes lets you see great sunrises, see more remote parts of the park, and be at the best spots at less crowded times. The refugio set up gives you a chance to do through hiking without having to carry heavy packs.
We met people from 20 countries. We made friends with a great group of people we would see at various times in the refugios and on the trails.
You definitely do not need a guide. And you can do the planning yourself, though engaging one of the tour companies or a local travel agent to help with the planning might make sense.

Amazing scenery. I’ve traveled to Banff and Jasper NPs in Canada, Taiwan cloud forests, Norway fjords, Alaska, Swiss Alps, Washington state, British Columbia, and all over the Rockies. This is the most beautiful combination of snow capped peaks + glacier lakes + vegetation all the way to the water. Bluest skies and amazing sunsets (long because it never really sets during the summer).
However, as an avid hiker I felt completely humbled by the difficulty when faced with loose, rocky trails, trails that required climbing boulders, slick granite, and 50-60 mph winds (sometimes with rain and hail) which would take every ounce of energy to hold ground. Definitely need poles and really good ankle supporting hiking boots, rain gear, gloves, and head covering. Plan to look at your step for 8 hours and only fully stop to look up at the scenery. This became a bit tiresome and not as “fun” for me.
Refugios: reservations get messed up often. Be prepared to camp when they lose your entire group’s reservation. Sleeping bags, even in dorms, which are unwashed (but they sell liners) and no pillows. Communal bathroom may be on the other side of long building. Water murky but they say it’s drinkable. WiFi doesn’t work well and machine says it takes PayPal but don’t count on it. Food is basic school cafeteria options. Few fresh fruits and veggies. No skim milk. Lots of breads. Instant coffee.
Most hikers in 20s to 30s age range and very fit. Few children, very few people over 50.

My girlfriend and I went on a condensed self-guided 3-day w-trek in Torres del Paine in January of this year through Dittmar Adventures. It was a slightly last-minute trip with limited time but Dittmar worked with us to make sure we maximized the time we had there. And they took care of everything we needed (lodging and food in the park, bus/ferry tickets in and out of the park, etc.). The trip was was well worth it! I don't feel like we missed much at all with the condensed trek. There were unfortunately some delays to our trek when we got to Patagonia (through no one's fault), but Dittmar was extremely helpful in not only rebooking our trip but also helping us navigate our situation until then. The latter of which even included helping us find a workaround when we temporarily ran out of cash and couldn’t use our credit cards for some meals. We knew we were in good hands and would happily use them again!

Amazing experience. We did the W inverted because the company Fantastico Sur messed up, well, nearly everything down to details, shuttle times and ferry tickets... Do not walk, but rather RUN from them. Vertice is their competitor, and the way to go as they were helping us with our issues with the rival company. Super nice of them... The trail is not "difficult." Just long days from 3-8 hours depending on where you are. Biggest question is, NO, you do NOT need to hire a guide. The trail is super well market and impossible to get lost (unless you're an idiot). Only thing a guide will do is talk to you about, "stuff." Do it! You will not regret it. We paid for meals, drinks and sleeping arrangements at the campsites vs. hauling all it ourselves. So glad we did as we were able to enjoy the trek more, vs. "working." Biggest item that helped us were trekking poles, do NOT do it without them. They will save you so much energy. PM me if you want more details.

This is one of the best trekkings I have ever made in my life. It is a little bit hard if you are not used to do trekking but the views are amazing.

Thanks for the information, Andrea2359! I am trying to book a few campsites myself to do the W trek with a friend this November and it seems everything is already booked up (sometimes even through 2022 on the recommended websites such as Vertice and CONAF). That said, I'd prefer not to do a guided program if possible! Do you have any recommendations for how you booked campsites/refugios?
Thanks!

Hello - I am planning to hike the W trail in Patagonia with my wife in early 2020 (we are active couple in our late 40s). I am interested to know who the best tour guide companies are. We are looking for the most deluxe accommodation (Geodesic domes are OK) and meals, etc provided. Ideally a relatively small group, with high quality guides. Also, where else would you recommend we go in Patagonia while we are there. Thanks!
Skrevet 17. november 2019
This is a late reply. Recommend you stay at the Rio Seranno Hotel in Torres del Paine and book your guides through them. They can secure you the best accommodation available along the W Trek.
Skrevet 7. januar 2020
Plan on hiking the W over New Years 2020 with wife and kids. Looking to book refugios in advance. Is this possible?
Skrevet 21. juli 2019
Yes! There's two different companies you want to boon with. Vertice Patagonia (reservas. verticepatagonia. cl) and Fantastico Sur (fantasticosur. com /reservations-and-contact )
Skrevet 11. oktober 2019
Does anyone know when the campsite reservations will be available from CONAF for Dec '19?
Or does anyone have an email address for CONAF?
Thanks!
Skrevet 1. mai 2019
They are available to book now. Tripadvisor isn't allowing me to paste the email or URL so you can go to the park's official website to book online. CONAF's campsites are free, just need to reserve a spot

Hi,
I am planning our W-treck. The plan is to go east-west, 1 day - arrival and hiking up to Refugio Chilean with night there. The 2nd day will be in 2 pieces: 1-hike up to Mirador Base de las Torres and back and 2-hike from Chileno to Refugio Los Cuernos. We do not plan to carry tents with us, just sleeping bags and have mountains hiking experince. So, I have two questions:
1. What will be the day 2 like distance- and time-wise? Is it doable in general?
2. I heard there is a shortcut trail between Refugio Chileno and Los Cuernos that helps to save time avoiding hike to Central sector. would you recommend taking this shortcut trail?
Any other advice and hints will be highly appreciated.
thanks a lot.
Skrevet 27. januar 2019
Yes that is definitely doable. Chileno to Mirador Base de las Torres takes 2.5 hrs (4.4km) one way. So that would be a 5 hour round trip hike from Chileno. Then from Chileno to Cuernos Refugio is about 6.5 hours one way. That makes it 11.5 hours roughly, but it all depends how fast you hike.
It will be a long day so you would need to start early. Most people who stay at Chileno wake up early and do the Base de las Torres hike early in the morning to catch the sunrise. If that is your plan, then you should make it to Los Cuernos Refugio before dark, in time for dinner.
The shortcut trail isn't really a shortcut, you will just follow the Sector Cuernos trail instead of going to the hotel.

We are planning to stay in one of the hotels near Torrs de Paine and drive into the park and do day walks on 3 days. Can you please recommend the most suitable tracks.
Skrevet 12. januar 2019
Day 1, take the ferry from Pudeto to Paine Grande and walk to Lago Grey Lookout then catch 6pm ferry back to Pudeto
Day 2, drive to welcome center near Las Torres hotel and do the Base de las Torres hike (about 9 hours round trip)

Hi,
I'm planning a trip to cover both Chile and Argentina - Southern Patagonia. I will start in Chile with the W trek and then plan to move / cross the border into Argentina. I will not be joining a tour group and plan to do this with a couple of friends.
My questions are:
1. Do you need to carry all your belongings / full backpacks for the whole W trek? I know there are some short treks you can take along the way which means, you only need to take a day pack and then return to pick up your bags afterwards.
2. My W trek will start from East to West; hence will end up at Laguna Grey. How do I get back to Laguna Amarga, or is there another location I can catch the bus to cross the border into Argentina for El Calafate. Is there a bus directly from Laguna Amarga? Is it best to do El Chaten first or El Calafate (which is closer?)
Thanks for your help
