A great hard day trip and not nearly as crowded as Potatso National Park. It's easy to get to by catching the no 12a bus - last stop, or 12b bus which seems to do a loop.
In August the lake was full and the grass green with lots of horses, yaks and cows.
Definitely recommend.

We stayed at Renqing Cimu Mei Court, a Tibetan style accommodation that needs to climb narrow stairs. It is located about 800m from Napa Lake. Our guide drove us a bit so we only need to walk approx 400m to the lake. As we were there in early April 2024, the grass were not green. It will be green in June/July. We had the whole lake to ourselves. Watch out for the wild horses . I went too close to me and it kicked me. Fortunately I managed to get away. If you need to rent a horse, ask from the hotel. The accommodation provides free rental of Tibetan costumes for us to take photos. The rooms are huge as I was not feeling well, the hotel provided 2 more mobile heater in addition to the room heater. The floor of the room is heated. It has modern facilities with Japanese style toilet bowl. Breakfast is simple but adequate.

没有想象和预期中的那么漂亮,也就是生态保持的比较好,没啥污染。或许香格里拉几个字太吸引人,略微有点失望。

As mentioned by the user "chc9533" in 2019, Napa Hai isn't a touristic lake. For people looking for a touristic and well-developed lake, this might not be the right place.
However, it's a perfect place for bird watching. I was able to spot many interesting species of birds.
It is better to have a car and keep flexible in order to be able to see the animals.
Definitely a place to recommend for nature lovers!

Excited by the prospect of a nice walk through the grassland and some interesting birdwatching, I found that we had to ride a horse (without any instruction or a guide) to a defined spot and pay RMB 280 each just for 1.5 hours, negotiated down to RMB 500. The walk at the end was disappointing as was the bird-watching. And we stayed too long and had to walk back, which was actually preferable although understandably wet underfoot. There is no food or drink on sale. If you want to admire the Napa Hai scenery, I would suggest a drive around the lake. It's very scenic with a lovely mountain backdrop, although the road was partly flooded during our visit

This place is called Napa Lake. It is supposed to be a lake but it's not. This is more a basin than a lake, Many people call it a prairie instead. In my humble opinion this is neither a lake nor a prairie. I would say it is a mine field. While walking it is absolutely necessary to be careful otherwise the risk of stepping over an excrement is concrete. The whole area is full of every sort of excrement...sheep, cows, horses and yaks. Despite this I could even enjoy my dangerous stroll as the weather was nice. However I wouldn't recommend visiting this place. In Shangri-La county there are definitely better places to visit. For the sake of readers' curiosity the admittance ticket amounts to 40 yuan.

Very suitable for two to three hours walk during the afternoon, feeling the wind and the sun in your face (use sunscreen). Take a rented scooter from Shangri-La (roughly 30 mins ride) and spend 30 RMB on entrance. Don't ride a horse, just walk yourself. Preferably wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty or muddy, but if you are careful it's not necessary. Take a camera 📷 to take photos of the mountains surrounding the valley and the horses/mules, sheep and yak.

Before writing my own review, I first read the 14 reviews ranking Lake Napa Hai at Terrible or Poor. I felt for these travellers who had a bad time here ranging from nothing much to see and/or running into tourist traps. I almost know exactly how this could happen for the unknowing tourists. Hopefully this review could help future travellers falling into the same traps.
First, you need to understand the ecology of Napa Hai (the word ‘hai’ literally means sea in Chinese, but in China's interior which is far away from the coastline such as Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet, ‘hai’ takes a different twist meaning lake). Unlike most other lakes in the world, Napa Hai is a seasonal lake in the rainy and snow-melting season between summer and early autumn, but turned into mostly grassland during the dry season. During the intermediate season between winter and spring, the open water shrinks and the lake turn into a large swamp. Therefore, it looked almost completely different depending on your month of visit. You should find out what it is like before visiting so that you are not surprised/disappointed unnecessarily.
Unless you intentionally come here for riding a horse, I would avoid it as unfortunately horse riding has become a tourist trap in many places in China today. Also, read many tourists got scammed for an entrance fee or excessive parking fees. Just be aware that the lake occupies a huge area surrounded by a normal road. Only a tiny corner was condoned off from public access and that’s where you will be asked for an entrance fee. While the entrance fee is actually legitimate, this area doesn’t offer better view than any other parts of this big lake. If you have a car, I will strongly suggest you to drive around the entire lake which should take less than 2 hours for the sake of both scenery and bird watching. This road doesn’t have a shoulder nor pullout, so it is sometimes difficult to stop as you wish and take a photo. We found an area at the farther side of the lake. The old ladies there asked us Y10 for parking and we gave them 20 – a small fee compared with what we would pay in HK.
Napa Hai is NOT just a lake. It is an important habitat and a crucial point along the migration path of many birds. We are not professional birders, just adore them. Saw the following species during our short 3 hours stay:
- White-Tailed Eagle: we just lucked out. It is one of the only 2 subspecies of sea eagle in the world besides the bald eagle.
- Black-Necked Crane: vulnerable, estimated population between 8,800-11,000. Aslo known as Tibetan Crane, the world's only alpine crane species, unique among the cranes in that it resides almost exclusively at high altitudes on the Tibet Plateau and in the Himalaya at the remote parts of India and Bhutan. Napa Hai is one of their most important winter habitats.
- Black Stork: A widespread but uncommon species, it breeds in scattered locations across Europe and Asia to the Pacific Ocean. Together with the Black-Necked Crane, they are classified as China's National Class 1 Protected Species, the same classification as the Great Panda.
- Many others: see photos.
Obviously, the migratory birds are not here all year round. You can easily miss them if you visit in the wrong season or didn’t spend enough time looking for them.
Hopefully, this review could help travellers to better enjoy the beauty of Napa Hai and appreciate its ecological importance as it rightly deserves.

Nous y sommes passés à la mauvaise saison. Ça ressemble plus à une attraction mal gérée qu'à un endroit typique. Le paysage vaut sûrement la peine à un autre moment . A voir.....

Went for the horse riding trail which is quite an experience as we rode on the Mongol horse which are much smaller in size.

Hi.. I would like to ask you what the weather there in the middle of December?
Is there any snow flakes in the middle of December?
Thanks
Skrevet 8. november 2016
I doubt a bit, even so high, it has a rather mild climate there. But it depends on weather, which might be cold enough in that time. You may be lucky on a very early morning or in the highest part of the park.
So don't be disappointed, but you have a good chance
