Hva folk sier
Great Priory - shame about the member of staff
jun. 2014
The Priory er svært bra.

The site is owned and administered by English Heritage (EH) and EH members have free access. Car parking is at the top of the site and there is a quarter of a mile or so walk down to the Priory and manor house; there are a couple of disabled parking spaces down by the reception kiosk along with some porta-loos.. Inside the Priory is wonderful, light and airy and just a place of tranquility and peace. The manor house, while not a ruin is pretty derelict but you can walk around the ground floor and parts of the basement - it was once a very grand house and it is such a pity that it is in a deplorable state now.. The grounds are also peaceful, with bird song and the sound of the River Croquet running alongside the site.

A wonderful place, quiet and tranquil, enhanced by birdsong and the flowing water in the lower grounds. The Church building is almost Cathedral like in proportions and the acoustic is amazing, as the singing by four women visitors demonstrated! Beautiful stained glass and some fascinating ancient burials, all that and a working organ too. The Georgian Manor house, though ruinous, is fascinating, and perfectly shows off the proportions of that era's living accommodation. A must see visit if in the area.

There is an attractive walk looking down on the river below to get to the Priory but seeing on a map that it is situated in a loop of the river I thought I would be able to wander by the river as part of my visit and you can't as it is all fenced off. The site is spoiled by a wedding venue next door with marquees right up by the fence.

The priory church is beautiful and has some wonderful stained glass and lovely old floor tiles.

The manor house is interesting in that it has not been restored so very plain but not a lot to see so we were through it in less than five minutes.

In all I was glad that as a member I had not had to pay to enter.

I gave 4 out of 5 to the surrounding landscape and woodland. Many magnificent oak trees line the road into the priory.

The buildings are well worth the visit.

Drinks and snacks available. Plus loos.

I came by bus with the last kilometre or so on foot.

Autumn colours would be spectacular for the photographer. I'm a little too early.

A lovely priory and old manor house. Beautiful setting and great to walk around, some of the manor is in ruin form but interesting where they have restored.

What a beautiful little priory! We were lucky enough to visit on a warm sunny June day and we were able to stroll around the grounds which are immaculately kept and perfect for a picnic!

The priory and house are in the same grounds to you can visit two historical treasures in the same visit. The priory is stunning! With beautiful stained glass windows and beautiful acoustics if you feel inclined to sing.
The house is semi derilict but very safe, you can see in places where the house has been modified from when it was first built up to more recent times. Its almost like history built on history!

The lady who works at Brinburn was lovely! I think she said she was born in the South and her passion for Brinkburn shows with her ample knowledge and enthusiasm of the buildings and grounds!

Perfect visit for a relaxing day out!

This was a stop off for us on our way to Rothbury. The detour was worth it as the setting is beautiful. It is sad that the surrounding land has been sold off as the buildings should be seen in the context of the abbey grounds. There are lovely stained glass windows and a few other features, which you can see on the on the website. Timed bookings keep the footfall low, but we didn’t find it busy. The lady on reception was very pleasant and helpful. There are a couple of portable toilets available and a car park.

Lady was really helpful

Lovely location

Pity that there are teepee tents next to it

Parking not clear. Said "overflow" when it was only car park

Portaloo toilets far from great

Positives outweigh the negatives and would definitely recommend

We decided to visit after taking out an English Heritage membership. If you have a blue badge you can park at the bottom of the lane (hilly) in front of the priory. If not you park at the top of the wooded lane and walk down (about 10 mins). The priory and Abbey are beautiful buildings. We did purchase a guide book but it was not very informative in giving you the history of each feature/artefact. The priory was lived in until the 1950's but is in a state of disrepair. However this shows you the multi layers of how the building was constructed and is fascinating. Some repairs are being undertaken. You can picture it in its grandeur.
I did query with the manager over the guidebook and it is being rewritten and there has been some amazing research done. I will definitely revisit it at a later date when some work has been done and they have a new guide book.
