It takes about ten minutes to walk from the small carpark to the priory but it’s a pleasant walk. We had a lovely greeting when we arrived and she explained the background. The dogs were allowed everywhere which makes a change and it was nice not to have to take turns looking after them. Both buildings are interesting for different reasons and it is definitely worth a visit.
I’d check if a wedding is on as we were glad to be leaving when they arrived. It went from appropriate background monastic music in the priory to music blaring out across the site. It also became very busy and the peaceful nature of the site was ruined.

Hello dogfriendlyplaces.
Thank you for your review. English Heritage try to be as friendly to our four-legged friends as possible. They are much a part of your family as the humans.
Here at Brinkburn we are especially fond of them, so do make sure you stop off for a treat the next time you visit.

If you are disabled or inviting friends to a wedding that are disabled please CHOOSE SOMEWHERE ELSE! Without doubt this is the most disabled unfriendly place we have ever been to. Although there are disabled parking bays close to the venue there are only two and consequently at a wedding the elderly are usually more than the parking spaces allow. To get from the disabled bay (or the closest you can park without the bay) all the path is gravel and if you have ever tried pushing a wheelchair over gravel you know that it is virtually impossible. There are no disabled toilets (I did ask the staff) and the closest is a cubicle in the ladies toilet with a pull down rail but certainly not even signposted as a disabled toilet. Fortunately it was my wife who is disabled, had it been a male it would have been totally impossible to use the male toilet as it was located up two flights of stairs and again the path around the toilet was gravel. They obviously think they are "doing their bit" by putting ramps by the tipi to get up a small step but as I said getting a wheelchair to anywhere near that point is a mammoth struggle. If we had not have had other members of the family around to constantly help me with my wife I am not sure we would have been forced to return home. It was our grandson's wedding and the trauma completely ruined the day.

A short walk down from the car park, to the sounds of the river Coquet, and the priory came into view, surrounded by woodland. The church is beautiful: austere, elegant and with wonderful acoustics. What a pity the music festivals ended in 2015. Finance was withdrawn. My husband sang and played the Hill organ, memorable and enjoyable. I imagined a priest in the monastic days, light streaming into the church, saying Mass there. His actions seemed to hang in the air still.
We wandered through the stripped out house, a victim of dry rot. Outside, a family was playing frisby on the grass. The custodian was really helpful and told us about the site, for which we are very appreciative. By now, it was raining heavily, but somehow this didn’t seem to matter at all , the atmosphere of peace resonating as we walked back to the car, under the dripping trees.

Hello Millie024
Thank you for such a lovely review of the site.
We love being able to help make someone's holiday that extra bit special and having your husband play our organ that day was as much a pleasure for us as him.
We hope you pop back down to see us the next time you are in the area.
Kind regards

Saturday 18 June 2022, My husband and I decided to go back and visit Brinkburn Priory under the care of the English Heritage, we last visited here four years ago.
The church is all that remains of the priory founded by Augustinian canons in 1135, but restoration in the 19th century has made this one of the best priory buildings in the country.
The beautiful church of Brinkburn Priory was home to Augustinian monks and was built in the early English style, and survives as completely re-roofed. It is an amazing building with stupendous stained glass windows that remind one of being in a small cathedral. While we were here there was a wedding in this beautiful church. I managed to get a beautiful photo of the bride whilst she was in the church grounds.
The adjoining Manor house is derelict ruin, but has traces of the original priory within its walls. It is quite eerie walking around this empty shell of a house with its ornate staircase and plasterwork ceilings, stone kitchen walls and empty range and the arched ballroom windows which look out over the grounds and down to the River Coquet which flows past at the end of the garden.
The Manor was so inspiring that I wrote two poems whilst I was here called ‘Requiem’ and ‘Lady Fenwick’, which tells a tale of a ghost left behind and walking forever within the walls of the manor and grounds.
My husband and I spent an interesting three hours here and again took lots of photographs; we left here late in the afternoon around 5.00 pm.
This is a beautiful place to visit and a wonderful place to have your wedding.

Few things to mention re. other reviews here.
The Manor House is an amazing place to visit - it's not a 'shame' that's it hasn't been refurbished, that's exactly it's charm! For those stating they spent '5 minutes' in the Manor House clearly have no soul, and obviously have no artistic bones in their being - it's absolutely crammed full of photo-opportunities.
The Priory itself is wonderful, as has been stated, and is an amazing venue for a Wedding.
Great place for picnics, and there are a few walking routes, if you know where to look (clue: gate at the back of the Priory)
One final note, this is not National Trust, it's English Heritage, sigh...

Hello Miloso110.
Thank you for your kind comments about the site, it is always lovely when someone enjoys it as much as we do.
However I must comment on your advice to walk the path behind the Priory, this is private land belonging to the landowners, so only their guests have access to this. However there is St Oswalds way on the otherside of the river which is accessable from Weldon Bridge, Pauperhaugh and Rothbury.
Please do visit us again, it would be lovely to see you.

What a peaceful and tranquil place. We were very warmly welcomed by Juliet, the site manager and nothing was too much trouble. She was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and a credit to English heritage.
Brink burn is a beautiful priory and has a lot of beautiful features, the stained glass windows in the priory are an impressive site even if you are not religious.
We could have happily stayed all day with a picnic and a book.
If your brave sing in the priory it has excellent acoustics and I would I have loved to have seen this place in its full former glory.

We visited today by chance on the way bath from Rothbury in Northumberland. a short walk down from the car park brings you to the abbey which is stunning and the manor house near the river. The lady that welcomed us was so lovely and helpful. She gave us an overview of the site and things to look out for and made a real fuss of our dog Archie! Its a stunning place and so peaceful. Well worth a visit.

The site is owned and administered by English Heritage (EH) and EH members have free access. Car parking is at the top of the site and there is a quarter of a mile or so walk down to the Priory and manor house; there are a couple of disabled parking spaces down by the reception kiosk along with some porta-loos.. Inside the Priory is wonderful, light and airy and just a place of tranquility and peace. The manor house, while not a ruin is pretty derelict but you can walk around the ground floor and parts of the basement - it was once a very grand house and it is such a pity that it is in a deplorable state now.. The grounds are also peaceful, with bird song and the sound of the River Croquet running alongside the site.

A wonderful place, quiet and tranquil, enhanced by birdsong and the flowing water in the lower grounds. The Church building is almost Cathedral like in proportions and the acoustic is amazing, as the singing by four women visitors demonstrated! Beautiful stained glass and some fascinating ancient burials, all that and a working organ too. The Georgian Manor house, though ruinous, is fascinating, and perfectly shows off the proportions of that era's living accommodation. A must see visit if in the area.

There is an attractive walk looking down on the river below to get to the Priory but seeing on a map that it is situated in a loop of the river I thought I would be able to wander by the river as part of my visit and you can't as it is all fenced off. The site is spoiled by a wedding venue next door with marquees right up by the fence.
The priory church is beautiful and has some wonderful stained glass and lovely old floor tiles.
The manor house is interesting in that it has not been restored so very plain but not a lot to see so we were through it in less than five minutes.
In all I was glad that as a member I had not had to pay to enter.

Its quite a long walk.
My wife has back and knee problems but we, like you, don't have a blue badge. We drove right up to the Priory and spoke to the lady in the office/shop and she let us park.
As this is a small, private site, you are not at risk of being ticketed.

It's about 10 miles. A 2.5 hour walk, although in wedding clothes, probably best to go for the 20 minute drive.
