We did the Thames to Paeroa part - Hauraki bike hire in paeroa - took us up to Thames, they are amazing, I can’t say enough nice things about this crew!! Was a lovely ride, flat so continuously peddling - looking forward to doing the rest of the trail.

I biked this with my two boys aged 5 and 8 in late April. We took the Goldfields Train from Waihi to Waikino and started biking from there. We rode from the Waikino station through the Karangahake Gorge Tunnel (which is about 6.5km including the 1.2km long tunnel), had a picnic lunch there and then rode all the way back to our car at the Waihi train station. That was a total of 25km and the boys did really well, eventhough they were complaining about sore bums on the last stretch :)

The section between Waihi and Waikino is a little bit undulating, but no hills as such. Everything else is flat as a pancake.

The train ride was great fun, the train is quite unique and can carry your bikes aswell. Waikino Station has a little café where we stopped for ice-cream on the way back.

Riding through the tunnel was the highlight for my boys.

Overall, the trail is not that spectacular landscape-wise and it's just one big gravel path. But we still enjoyed our cycling adventure!

We started from Waihi station and rode the 22.5 kls to Paeroa where we stopped for 40min and then rode back to our car parked at the station. We certainly knew we had ridden a good distance by the time we got back even though we were on ebikes. The track from after going through the tunnel under the highway was slightly more boring than the 14kls before the tunnel which you need a light if you ride though which is roughly about 1kls. The main downside was riding against a headwind on the way back especially the last 10kls.

Better signage for overseas cyclists, clean up the trail in parts pretty rough for older people, get all cattle stops changed to the new type

Cycled 24kms from Te Aroha and back on the old rail trail, nice and flat across lovely farmlands. Popped in to Paeroa from a coffee and slice at The Foundary. As easy ride for those not wanting lots of hills.

We’d done the gorge before, so took the chance to try something new. Saturday was Paeroa to Thames - a pretty ride with easy to follow trails, and just a little gravelly at times. Sunday was Te Aroha to Matamata - best path of the weekend, lovely countryside and smooth running except for the cattle stops! Then Paeroa to Te Aroha to top it off... it felt like the unloved path, a bit rough in places, but still lovely. A great weekend.

When compared to the Otago Rail Trail and A2O, definitely only a 2 star experience. 160km of dross. The best part is the 10km through the Karangahake Gorge, great scenery cycling past steep hills by a fast moving river on a quality trail.

The Paeroa - Te Aroha - Matamata section is completely forgettable, boring farmland. The ORT is a little like this too in parts, but they have the smarts to put in information of local historical interest every 2-3km. Why haven't they done that here? Completely bypassing the Kaimai Rail Tunnel, DC3 crash memorial, and Wairere Falls section on the TA - MM section is nuts! What were the track designers thinking????

The track quality is pretty average too with lots of slumping. Looks like they just threw a bit of gravel down without prepping the underlayer.

TA is a superb town, lots of metal art on display and quirky shops. And great hot pools too!

We gave the Miranda section a miss, the hot pools had been shut for 5 months for renovations. And the $150-200 for 3 quotes for the 34km pickup from Thames is just plain theft. Down south I paid $70 for a 130-160km pickup for the A2O and ORT pickups.

Could do better.

We left Matamata early in the morning(quite foggy) and took roughly just over 2 hours to reach Te Aroha where we had a nice lunch at Villa nine cafe and we spent about 1.5 hrs in the area before heading back the 37kls.
Slightly slower coming home as our legs were starting to feel the affects even though it was mainly flat and the most interesting bits was going over the bridges so we were very glad when we arrived at the Tower road motel where we spent the night.
A lot of money has been spent on this trail especially on the surface and fencing along the properties not to mention the bridges.

We parked at Waikino station as recommended by friends. Loads of parking space in the last week of February. The first section of track had some fairly big stones of 2 to 3 inches but after about 600m the gravel size got smaller. Very nice cruise near the river for 6 km and then 8 into Paeroa for lunch. I may park in P next time and lunch at the station.
