FOMO - Fear of missing out
There are many many wonderful sights in the area of China; about an hour away is the Zhangye Danxia Geopark which has both the Rainbow Mountains and the Binggou Danxia Scenic Area in separate locations. Both are amazing and must be seen. The Zhangye Buddist Temple in central Zhangye. And the Matti Temple Grottoes also nearby which ending up being one of the best places to visit. There is no way I could have seen all these sights with Silk Road Tours and Simon.
Not only did he get me to all these places very efficiently but he simultaneously let me wander AND steered me to the better locations. Provided meals, which was helpful to me with unfortunately food allergies and navigated the little things.
Many of these tasks I maybe / probably could have done by myself, with cerrtainly a lot more pain. But at the end of the tour I was certain I had seen the absolutely best sights and didn't miss anything. Simon was great.
Two things he that further illustrate how helpful he was and tour is worth taking: at the Rainbow mountains (my main reason for visiting the area), they were offering short helicopter rides. I wanted to go but did not have enough Yuan for the cost. Simon paid the fee and let me pay him back later. Very kind. Even more helpful was right before I got on the helicopter, I noticed my phone (thus camera and video) battery was nearly dead. Simon again came to the rescue with a power bank to charge my phone through the helicopter ride. The two day tour ended up perfect.
Only only warning: there is a fair amount of walking and climbing stairways to get to the scenic viewpoints.

We had a 3-day tour of Zhangye (rainbow mountains, canyons, and temples). The service exceeded our expectations. They (guide - Vicky, driver - Mr. Chu made everything easy and were always thinking of us! We've lived in China for two years, but didn't feel comfortable in a rural area. It was perfect! We saw everything we wanted, information was on point, and they were accommodating with small requests. It's always so helpful when our guide orders or assists with ordering in the restaurants since there isn't any English or pictures on the menu in Zhangye! This is a very reliable tour company! Highly recommend with no hestitation!

Super interesting place - the highest dunes in the world! We were transferred from Zhangye by small bus (a couple of hours) and after at gate to the National Park we have got 4X4. Drive was really good, Nice views, adventure driving in the desert. Simon guide us all the time. We slept in guesthouse in the desert close to small buddhist temple, fortunately open this time (while only one monk lived there was on the place). Really good dinner in the guesthouse. There is shower and toilette there. In high season is possible to sleep in yurt there (traditional mongolian tent).

I am a tour leader, I used Simon's services (Silk Road Tours) to arrange a bus for my group in Zhangye. Simon answers quickly, offers agreeable prices, cares about the service. The bus he arranged for us was in good condition and came on time. Everything went smooth. So I would like to thank Simon for a good service and wish good luck in developing his business.

We had an excellent 2 day tour with Simon Silk Road China Tours. Everything worked out as planned. Simon was waiting for us at Zhangye railway station. After visiting Giant Buddha Temple we drove to Danxia Landform to see coloured rock formations at sunset which was very impressive. The next day we visited Binggou Landform which was even more impressive, the rock formations were spectacular and we just about had the whole park to ourselves a very special atmosphere so quiet and peaceful in such a beautiful setting. In the afternoon we drove to the Matisi Grottoes. It was a bit of a climb up to the Grottoes built into the cliffs but well worth the effort to visit the small temples.
We then drove back to stay overnight in Zhangye before catching our train back to Xining.
The whole trip was very well arranged by Simon who was an excellent and very informative guide. He was very thoughtful and kind helping my wife climb up to the Matisi Grottoes.
We had an excellent trip with Simon and would highly recommended Silk Road China Tours. Thanks a lot Simon

The whole trip was very well arranged by Simon who was an excellent and very informative guide. He was very thoughtful and kind helping my wife climb up to the Matisi Grottoes.

We made a four days tour along the silk road, mainly visiting Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang. The landscapes were amazing and very different: from the rainbow landform and the snowy Himalayan mountains to the sand dunes in Dunhuang.
In planning our trip, I researched a few tour companies and finally I decided to contact Simon, after reading very good reviews on tripadvisor. He was even more than I expected; very professional and knowledgeable and also very kind and friendly. Hotels were good and everything was attended by him: entrance tickets, hotel check in, luggage etc. Moreover, everyday he used to bring us water and some local snacks. We had a very nice and unforgettable trip and I highly recommend Simon and Silk Road China Tours!

We reflect upon our China trip almost every day. In recollecting our china travels and sharing our stories with others the Silk Road is writ large. The incomparable enormity of our experiences of the Silk Road and surrounds is filled with the people we met, the places we saw, the vastness, China today. It was four weeks of wonders, feeling safe, informed, educated and cared for by our tour operator – Simon, of Silk Road China Tours. In planning our trip we reviewed and researched numerous tour companies but it was always Simon’s company that came to the fore. Simon understood from the outset the kind of travel experience we were after. His prompt communication, patience and genuine interactions were the reason we chose Silk Road China Tours. Once there, beyond the important heritage sites, it was the unexpected, off-the-beaten track places that we visited and our perceptive and experienced guides, carefully chosen by Simon that made our trip so memorable. We appreciated the conversations with our guides who spoke very good English, were attentive yet willing to let us make our own way when we wanted. In particular, we appreciated the sincere and candid company of Simon himself for extended parts of our tour. We were lucky. I always fascinated about the Silk Road for many years; the long journey from East to West, the hardship, history, culture, landscape and the famous story of The Monk with his disciples Monkey King and the Pig. Finally, we decided to go but it was a last minute decision.
To apply a China Visa with an Australian passport which will take some time, so we decided to join a tour to speed things up.
We had a look at Wendy Wu, it's quite expensive be honest and didn't come back with answers of our questions such as providing a hotel list, possibility of slightly changing the itinerary and the cost..
We also looked at Intripid Tour and other tours websites, but no tours going out at the dates we want...somehow we came across of Silk Road China Tours with Simon.
Reading reviews over a few travel companies and made a few inquiries online over the weekend. Surprisingly Simon was the first one made contact with us, not by replying online but with an international call on a Sunday. Very impressive.
Simon is a professional tour operator, he is not only the owner of the company but he also meets and greets you and tour guiding you personally. It didn't matter the time difference or the time of the day or weekend, he would respond to your inquiry almost instantly with no delay which has given us a lot of confidence and peace of joining his tour.
Price was reasonable with no extra cost to us during the whole trip except if you wish to change or do anything extra that would be extra cost to you of course. All our meals are included in the cost, BLD and we enjoyed the food so much. Hotels choice were 4-5 stars. We even had a few drinks with our guides and drivers during our trip. We had fun and a good time together.
Simon has a good pool of local tour guides and drivers working for him and they made a big difference to the journey especially speaking of good English. Also, one main reason we used Silk Road China Tours that Simon himself lives in Dunhuang, a true local of the Silk Road. It means he knows well about the regions, it helps. it's a bonus. He also phoned us every now and then to see how we are going during our trip and as our tour guide in Zhangye, Dunhuang and Jiuquan.
It's two of us, me and my husband and we went from Melb to Xian on 10th of Oct 2017 at shoulder season after the crazy Golden Week of China. Good timing for us, less crowd with better of everything. It's a private tour of 15days to suit our needs with a reasonable price tag.
We had such a memorable trip and Simon is a fantastic host. Highly Recommended this tour company with local touch!
