Ajanta caves are a UNESCO heritage, definitely worth a visit if you are in Mumbai.
It makes sense to combine it with a visit to another UNESCO heritage, Ellora caves, which are not too far from Ajanta.
The nearest airport to Ajanta and Ellora is in Aurangabad, which is a one hour flight from Mumbai (e.g. IndiGo has good flights).
From Mumbai take an evening flight to Aurangabad, stay there overnight (we stayed in Green Olive hotel - really good experience) and ask the hotel to get organised a car with a driver for the whole day (we paid 4000 rupies).
It’s good to leave Aurangabad early morning around 7am, to visit Ajanta before it get’s too hot. Get dropped at the view point above Ajanta caves, take some pictures and then go down the hill. On the way down look down to the beautiful waterfalls on the left (in or after the monsoon season only). There is another good viewpoint half way down the hill. From this second viewpoint go down to the caves level. Buy the tickets at cave number 8 (600 rupies for foreigners) and then go to the most left cave (number 26). Then continue to the right (clockwise) towards the cave number 1. The most impressive caves are number 26, 19, 17, 16, 10, 6, 4, 2, 1. After the cave number 1 go down to the shuttle bus (60 rupies), which takes you 4km to the visitors centre with many kiosks and the car parking, where the driver should be waiting.
People who don’t have a driver go the other way round, starting and finishing at the car park, but then they have to climb up the hill, which is much less convenient, especially when it is hot.
The whole Ajanta visit takes around 3 hours (excluding the the way there and back), so both Ajanta and Ellora can be visited on the same day, leaving Aurangabad at 7am, getting to Ajanta after 9am, leaving Ajanta around 12pm, getting to Ellora around 2pm, leaving Ellora before 6pm when it closes and getting back to Aurangabad by 7pm. So you catch safely the evening flight back to Mumbai.
The best season for a visit to Ajanta is August and September, when the waterfalls are most impressive, the stream is full of water and trees and plants are green and lush, but it is worth a visit any time.

The Ajanta Cave were started 2200 years ago. When you walk through this site you have to wonder how the people of that era were able to accomplish this task. The caves are carved out of solid rock and even as old as they are they’re still in good condition. If you’re in this part of India this is a must see. Just one bit of advice, there are hundreds of steps you need to negotiate. If you have any serious knee issues you may want to think about it.

.. that you can't even describe verbally. You have to have been here and you have to have penetrated this fantastic place to understand and admire it.
Plan at least one day for the visit. It's not unlikely that after half the route you'll be so full of profound impressions that you'll decide to extend it.
Here is a tip on how to approach this visit:
A bus/taxi ride here from Aurangabad takes several hours and then you end up among gigantic crowds of people that make it impossible to enjoy this area. If you want/have to drive back you have to sit in the vehicle for several more hours.
Fardapur (also Phardapur) is a small place that is very close to the entrance to the caves. You can easily get there from Aurangabad by bus/shared taxi/taxi. There are now numerous, perfectly acceptable hotels and other facilities in Fardapur where you can stay overnight and then get up early the following day.
We extended our stay here and only drove further the day after our visit to Fardapur. Jalgaon; 1 hour travel time.

Ajanta Mural paintings are 1500 yrs old, but when you will be mesmerised to see the ingenuity of the artists.
Before visiting please read about caves on wiki, it will help for sure

you need to take bus from parking which costs around 25₹ per person

there are 29 caves out of which you can visit 25 caves

Please wear floater or Crocs when you visit Ajanta caves as you have to remove your footwear in most of the caves.

carry water bottle, cap. At the entrance where you buy tickets for caves. there is a nice Hotel from MTDC where you can have decent food, water and refreshments

there is dearth of Guides so go early in the morning and book a guide, without guide for the first visit you wont understand many things.
guide will finish the tour in 1-1n1/2 hrs based on the size of the group. then take another hour or two for viewing the caves of particular interest again and to take Photographs

What an incredible experience viewing water colour paintings on the walls and ceilings of these caves which are 2000 - 2200 years old! Yes, that is what Ajanta has for you!
We added Aurangabad on our Bangalore - Himachal driving trip to be able to see Ajanta & Ellora caves and these were far ahead of our expectations. Each of these paintings (and the caves) tell a story which you can learn if you take an ASI approved guide with you. The guides here are expensive, paid Rs.2050/- plus tips, but this was the best thing that we did. Our guide, Mohamed Nasir, was very knowledgeable and brought the history to life with his incredible knowledge and story telling skills. He is also the co-author of the books on Ajanta & Ellora caves.

Few tips for first time visitors:
1. Plan to go very early in the morning, both to avoid crowds as well heat from the afternoon sun. We reached at 9am and that was about a good time to be there. Even in Feb the place was already quite warm & the afternoon sun very bright. Remember that these caves are closed on Monday, so plan accordingly.
2. Wear comfortable shoes and light clothes as you'll be walking a lot here.
3. There is ample parking available.
4. There are many shops selling local curios & fast food near the parking area. We didn't experience these.
5. After you park and walk through the shops, there are buses which will take you to the starting point of the caves from where you'll buy the entrance tickets.
6. Guides are available at Cave 1. We didn't see many, so best is to reach in the morning before the crowds.
7. There is a short cut while returning back, don't miss this!

We have diamonds here in India to explore and we are running around globe to admire pebbles.

Ajanta was an eye opener,  seeing is believing.  Never knew such places existed right here in India.

These caves date back 800 to 2000 years back. It has all Buddhist related sculptures and paintings. The intricacy used in painting is remarkable. Depiction of Jataka Tales, makes them appear live.

This place ha lot of positive vibes and if you get chance, do sit in cave 26 for meditation.
