Ridiculous decision made to charge full entry price (£8.30 per person) to access the cafe that used to be free to access. So, £24.90 for three of us to then pay for a cup of tea and some cake? Not sure the cafe will last long unfortunately…

My class of 7 and 8 year olds enjoyed a lovely trip to Castell Coch. The audio guides were informative, and they enjoyed exploring the different rooms. They also liked using the school resource sacks for Health and Clothing, building the castle and solving the pipework problem in the boiler room. The staff were very welcoming.

Looks beautiful from the outside- don’t bother paying to go in!
I’m such a sucker for a castle- but this was such a huge disappointment! £16.80 to get in (me and hubby) and honestly there’s nothing there 😬 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a courtyard…
They did have an audio guide but it was all over and done with in 15-20mins max.
It’s beautiful to look at, but how they can charge you is shocking.
So many nicer castles nearby- Caerphilly is worth the money and so is Cardiff castle.
We’ve enjoyed Ogmore and Coity much more and both were free?!
Save your cash folks!

Visited yesterday- lovely site in the woods. Car parking was haphazard and could do with some lines marking out bays. Maybe also a loo block.
Castle itself was a delight, nice to visit somewhere not a ruin even if it is a ‘interpretation’ of a castle rather than the real medieval thing.
Felt the rooms could do with more explanation boards since not everyone has a guidebook or the audio tour.
Also the Cadew could do more to explain the pre-rebuilding of the castle, there was basically nothing on this.
Tea room was surprisingly well priced.
Overall, great spot to visit.

Beautiful Castell in the woods to walk around and to go inside. There is a long walk through the woods and a secret cafe. You could easily spend a few hours here. Great for dog walkers and people with children looking for some exercise.

Having seen Castell Coch from the motorway any number of times I finally got there. Sadly, we were later than I'd hoped, and we arrived in a downpour.
The folly is just that and I do wish we'd had time for the audio tour as I'm sure we missed some of the whimsy.
But we loved it, but give yourself time 2 hours may be a bit tight

Castell Coch is a stunning castle located just outside of Cardiff, Wales. My family and I visited in August and were absolutely blown away by the beauty of the place. The castle is incredibly well-preserved and the grounds are gorgeous. We spent hours exploring the castle, taking in the views, and learning about its history. I would highly recommend a visit to Castell Coch - it's an absolutely incredible place.

Free entry with English Heritage was a nice bonus but even without that the entry fee would have been good value. On a very wet day we didn't get to walk around the grounds so no idea what they were like but the castle interiors were a real surprise, in a good way. Really interesting place in really good condition with some stunning decoration. The audio guides were perfect and provided loads of details about the castle and the family who restored it.
All the staff we met were helpful and friendly. There is loads to see, make sure you look behind every door and look up/down all the staircases.
Must also mention the 3 young lads manning the cafe. They did a great job and the prices were like stepping back in time. Tea for £1!
A couple of hours well spent.

Went with a 12 year old and 5 year old.
It is a beautiful place but a lot of narrow winding steps. I’m disabled and struggled at times. It was interesting but didn’t take long to walk around. The girls loved the gift shop. Very friendly staff.

Does the car park close at the same time as the castle itself or does it stay open to allow people to walk around the grounds?

Hi Rachel, unfortunately dogs are not allowed at Castell Coch due to the nature of the building.

I had some awful experience in this castle last weekend. It seems someone called Kin3 had the same experience in May, but it didn't improve at all since May until now.
I wonder why this lady with long curl hair (Lesley?) in the ticket desk still hasn't got any improvement in her manner and attitude? She needs some training, I can't believe this kind of people can work in such a beautiful castle. What a shame!
We just wanted to have some tea in the tea room which said free entry, but she was unhappy we use the toilet in the castle courtyard and she thought we wanted to sneak into the castle without a ticket. She shouted to me and my daughter in public when we were just waiting for the toilet.
If you don't believe people and think we wanted to go inside the castle without a ticket, why you allow people free entry to the tea room?
If you have a tea room, why there is no toilet inside?
If the toilet in courtyard is the only option, why you are unhappy customers use it?
Such a beautiful castle inside the forest. Unfortunately there are some awful people working there.

Just copy Kin3’s experience in May 2019 here. It’s the same experience to mine.
26 May 2019 Kin3 :
Stopped here to have a look round the castle, eat a picnic and grab a coffee. We were a party of 10. 4 of us wanted to look round the castle, all 10 of us got tea room tickets to use the cafe and toilets. Lesley on the ticket desk proceeded to tell my party we weren't allowed to be in the courtyard while we waited for everyone to use the toilet, we wouldnt be allowed eat sandwiches on the benches and that we were 'going all over the place' when in fact we were just waiting for everyone to use the toilet before proceeding to go to the cafe as a group, while we were waiting two of our party had decided to check out the gift shop. Her attitude was so awful having stared at us since we had entered the courtyard and being asked to make way for paying customers to use the toilets despite there being no queue and half of us being paying customers we decided to leave because we felt so unwelcome. We didnt buy anything from the gift shop, didnt buy any coffees and asked for a full refund whilst relaying our feedback to which she rolled her eyes and smiled patronisingly stating "I'm just a smiley person". This was infuriating and she shrugged the whole situation off. I hope she receives some training in manners, courtesy and the castle takes on board that it should be a more open and welcoming place so that they receive more custom. Lesley lost the castle between £60-100 and will no doubt continue to do so if this is her attitude. Instead of chastising and making us feel awkward and uncomfortable she could have simply tried to upsell more tickets and create enthusiasm and excitement.
What is the wheelchair access like ?

Other than getting into the main courtyard and the rooms on that level, I don’t recall it being wheelchair accessible at all.

Hello, if we are traveling by train, is this an easy spot to get to? Any other suggestions in Wales? Our time is limited and I would like to do at least a day in Wales

Castell Coch is quite small even though it is beautiful. It’s also not an old castle but it’s on the site of one. It was built for the Marquess of Bute. As you only have a short trip planned I’d say Cardiff Castle is more impressive and is right in the centre. I’d also reiterate the advice of Carla w and recommend you visit Cardiff Bay and take a look at the Assembly’s Sennedd building which is wonderful and also The renovated Norwegian Church where Ronald Dahl was christened. There’s usually a craft fair in there.

Does the tea room do a set afternoon tea suitable for a birthday treat?

At certain times of the year the tea room offers cream teas. - a scone, clotted cream, butter and Welsh jam, with a hot drink of choice, for £5.50. Hhowever the menu is subject to seasonal variations, so it is worth a phone call before visiting to find out what is likely to be available, and at what cost. At the moment there are cream teas, but also very reasonably priced soup with bread and butter, sandwiches, panini and toastier.
