Glen Affric is frequently referred to as “the most beautiful glen in Scotland” - and this is truly one of the most magical places I’ve ever been. I might even go so far as to say it’s the most beautiful glen (valley) I’ve ever seen! It’s deep in the Highlands with only one narrow road passing through it and it’s largely undeveloped which has allowed it to remain pretty wild.

The mighty River Affric rushes through the glen and is quite wide and powerful. There are numerous lochs, some very large, and countless waterfalls! The plants surrounding the trails are so interesting- providing a rainbow of color - a lot of deep reds, along with yellows and greens against the backdrop of the deep brown waters - just glorious!

This glen holds the third largest area of ancient Caledonian pinewoods in Scotland, consisting mostly of Scots Pines which have grown here in some form or another since the last ice age!

The Forestry Commission has worked hard to “rewild” the area with native plants and trees and root out the invasive species and its had marvelous results - native wildlife is thriving and the area is recovering from heavy tree harvesting activities of years past.

We visited on an eco tour with the Rabbies tour company as the roads can be quite difficult for American drivers (lol) - the tour was fantastic and while we spent a good bit of time here, it just wasn’t enough bc it was so amazing. But we had plenty of time for a few hikes and some exploring. And we even saw some wandering sheep on the way out that apparently weren’t supposed to be that deep into the woods haha!

We stopped and did a short hike around Dog Falls but moved on and spent most of our time at the end of the maintained road where there’s parking and picnic tables and some really great trails.

The first trail we did took us up to the Memorial Cairn for expansive 360 degree views - fairly easy hike - some incline and muddy but doable. Trails are all surprisingly well maintained. The views are dramatic and words could never do them justice! We also did another short hike down by the rushing River Affric - easy and so worth it.

If you’re in the Highlands and able to visit Glen Affric, I can’t recommend it enough! It’s pretty close to Inverness and so worth it!

Some great walks from the various parking areas along the Glen. I went to Plodda Falls first and then down the other side to Dog Falls, Loch Beinn á Mheadhain and then down to River Affric. Choice of way marked trials from each one to some wonderful viewpoints. I think it would be more reasonable to pay for a day parking ticket that you could then take to each of the parking areas because I had to pay £3 twice along the same stretch of road because I wanted to do a trail from the two charging car parks. Plodda Falls isn’t a charging car park though and worth the dodgy track down to it.

Great walks from the different parking areas in the forest with view on the Loch. We got a map at Drumnadrochit Loch Ness Hub Center and on each parking area you have different options for walks !

Beautiful Glen surrounded by ancient Caledonian pine forests with a pleasant 4 hr walk around Glen Affric Loch. The views all around are simply stunning.

We walked the 12 miles around Loch Affric, the paths were well maintained and the scenery amazing. Could do with a bench or two along the way to sit and have your packed lunch, which is a must when doing this walk, which took us five and a half hours. The weather was hit and miss, set off in lovely sunshine, walked through a sleet storm and back out into sunshine again. It's best to prepare for all weather for this walk as different parts of the Glen can have totally different weather. The only negative thing I have to say is that the first bridge (anticlockwise direction) is roped off as it is very damaged and looks like it will collapse at any point. We crossed with care as there is no other option other than turning back, this needs taking care of as, if the walk is done clockwise, and you had to turn back, you would have already walked about 7 miles. There is also a river crossing to be made at around the 5 mile mark which was challenging as the river was in full flow, be prepared to get your feet wet. There is a complicated way of stepping over rocks which are slippy. Could do with a small bridge, couple of sturdy planks of wood would do the trick.

Absolutely beautiful drive with plenty picnic areas to spend time. We drove the route and stopped off and took walks with the dogs. We saw a family canoeing and paddle boarding. Water was so clean and clear.

WOW! Fantastic hike, the loch walk is just over 11 miles and took us just under 5 hours.
Started cloudy with rain - finished in sunshine - the weather can change quiet quickly without any shelter so water proofs and sunscreen recommend.

We also did the much smaller walk around rocks the day before which was also impressive for those short on time

Great loch to walk (or run) around, with lovely views. Park at the final car and simply head up the valley, but make sure you are well equipped for your expedition.
Car parking cost was reasonable as the car park has toilet facilities and picnic benches

We travelled the length of the Glen which was just so lovely.
Stopped in the last car park which was quite full but so peaceful, we got caught out as there was a small charge for parking but took only cash which we didn’t have (thanks to covid!).
Lovely for birdwatching but there wasn’t too much about for us.
Just a quiet, peaceful tranquil area.
