The Falgu is a sacred river for Hindus, first pind daan is performed at the bank of Falgu river. Vishnupad Mandir is situated on the bank of Phalgu river, it is also called Niranjana river. However, the river is mostly dried up and only sand bed can be visible. There is an interesting story related to Falgu river, which says that Sita had cursed the Falgu River and on account of this curse, the Falgu lost its water, and the river is simply a vast stretch of sand dunes.

Gaya is located by the Falgu (Phalgu) river and very popular for Pind dhaan - ceremonies for the departed ones. Falgu river is revered as a part of Vishnu and one of the holiest rivers as per Hindu mythology. Lord Rama is believed to come to Gaya to do pind daan for his father - Dasarath and thus the practice continues.

The bank of River Falgu is an ideal place for performing Shradh and Pind dan or in other words post death rituals for the deceased.

As we heard that this river is almost dry in all seasons ,but this time the river alive
We did tarpan here for our ancestors Then we made pind dan on the bank of this sacred river. After
..
crossing the river to visit sita kund which is situated on the other side .Water was below our knees .On the other side also we made pind out of sands , as it is believed that sita mata did give pind for Dasharath.

I love strolling to sita kund from vishnupad temple. Its the best walk on beach kind of sand. 10 months in an year there is no water in Falgu. All pind daan devotees start their religious journey from here.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. While the cremation rites or “kriya” are the duty and karmic duty of the eldest son, Pind Daan is the expectation from each and every living soul, man or women, older or younger to pay homage to the departed ancestors.
The Pind Daan is typically performed by male children (sons), or other male relatives such as brothers, father, grandsons etc. However if there are no close male relatives that are willing or able to perform Pind Daan, female relatives such as daughters, mother, granddaughters etc. can also perform Pind Daan. In circumstances where male relatives perform Pind Daan/Gaya Shrad, women can equally and fully participate in the entire ceremony along with their brothers, husbands, fathers, grandfathers, etc. Women should also take an added responsibility of performing and encouraging the entire family to perform donations, feeding the hungry, feeding cows, etc. throughout the year in the memory of their ancestors.
The right to perform Pind Daan can also be transferred from one person to another. This means that one can perform Pind Daan for anyone not just your own relatives. Our father could not perform Pind Daan for our mother due to personal and health-related reasons. We were advised that since as the surviving husband the Pind Daan of the wife is his right, we should just seek his permission before heading to Gaya to perform Pind Daan. At Gaya both my brother and I performed Pind Daan and my sister participated in both ceremonies.
Dear readers the purpose of the information shared in the Questions and Answers format here is to share our experiences and thoughts with others who may be planning a trip to Gaya and are trying to decipher the myriad of conflicting and often confusing information that one gets exposed to. The purpose of the information shared with you is NOT to challenge any ones beliefs or to start a meaningless debate on the differences between what you believe in and what is presented here. When it comes to matters like such each of us should simply do what we believe is best. I sincerely hope that the above information is helpful, will be used in the proper light and spirit it is intended, and will help you come closer to making a trip to Gaya and paying your respects to your ancestors. God Bless!

Visited Gaya to provide pind dan in the month of July 2018 for my late father and late maternal uncle, upon getting down from contacted bharat sevashram sangha office just outside of the station, we had pre booked a cab service in gaya as there are no ola or uber service there, incase you cannot afford cabs you have to depend on autos. On reaching bharat sevashram sangha, we took a room and took bath (It is incredibly dirty @bharat sevashram sangha, we had our hotel bookings else where in outskirts of gaya) . For the room bharat sevashram sangha charged 301 INR for 1 hour and post which for Pind Puja in bharat sevashram sangha they charged INR 501. Then in Pind Dan location near Falgu river for entering the Pind Dan Center INR 5 was charged, getting water from Falgu river (which is dry almost throughout the year) INR 5, Cow Milk INR 5, for flowers INR 10, for writing the names of your ancestors at pind dan center INR 51, for puja done at vishnupad temple INR 51, and for puja done in akshaybat in gaya INR 51. The Pandas at each of these sites will ask for INR 251 or INR 501, but stick to your guns and budget, they will emotionally blackmail you as well, but stick to your budget. For overall puja done by the Purohit for all these centers we gave INR 351. All your bhaktis will go out of the window when you have to bargain with these Pandas and Purohits. Its a tradition one has to follow to attain mental peace, so we did, but you have to be practical as well. Do not go alone as it will be difficult to manage, keep a cool head, as the panda's will irritate the hell out off you. This is the real india, people don't have jobs so they have to run this puja business to get their stomach full. Incredible India Indeed.
