Wow what an awesome time we had at the caves this afternoon 😊 my partner and I went and were lucky enough to be the only ones on the tour with the amazing Lee. She was super lovely and very knowledgable about the caves and the surrounding area. If you are lucky enough to go, ask her to sing in the middle of the caves, her incredible voice bouncing off the huge cave walls was beautiful! Thanks so much for having us we really enjoyed ourselves 😊

Amazing

We had a great experience visiting the Ngarua Caves Sunday 16 May. It was a wet day but with the cave entrance being right next to the cafe and gift shop it meant we did not get wet. The guide was really informative and friendly with the tour lasting just under an hour. The cave is amazing and far better than anything we have to offer in the North Island. Rain or shine it’s a great experience.

Amazing experience

We have been meaning to visit here for the past year and finally went with visiting family - so glad we did and wish we hadn’t waited so long! Tours run every hour from 10am to 3pm. We arrived just after 11am due to the road works on Takaka Hill (allow an extra 15 minutes) and they quickly accommodated us and joined us on the tour that had just started. Our guide was very passionate and knowledgeable about the cave and happy to answer any questions. The highlight for me was the talk about moa and being able to hold a moa bone. The ground is uneven and a little slippery in places so wear sensible footwear. There is also a ladder at the end you need to climb to get back out. I highly recommend visiting here and look forward to coming back! Is was $25 for an adult and took about 40 minutes to go through the cave with our small group. There is a cafe and gift shop onsite.

Interesting experince.

Interesting experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the caves and the history attached to them. We were a bit tentative about the exit with a ladder and narrow opening. This was not a problem at all. The ladder is very sturdy and easy to climb. At the exit you do have to mind your head but nothing to worry about. Overall a great experince.

A step back in time, underground...
mar. 2021
This is a great place to visit if you are staying around the area - Motueka, Marahau, Kaiteriteri, Takaka etc.

We were staying in Marahau and it took us about an hour to drive here. Depending on the timing of the traffic lights on Takaka Hill (due to roadworks) it can add an extra 15 minutes to your journey so allow time for this if you are heading from that direction.

Guided tours depart every hour on the hour and take about 45 minutes. It is recommended you have suitable (walking) footwear, and an extra layer or two of clothing as it’s cooler underground in the caves (it was about 11 degrees the day we did it) so if you generally feel the cold you’d want a couple of layers.

The caves are interesting with the Moa bones and there are some amazing formations - definitely worth the visit.

The ‘cabin’ or shop sells some lovely souvenirs. There are the standard items such as magnets and t shirts however there are some different items such as knitted (alpaca wool) hats and pebble art pictures.

You can purchase hot or cold drinks, ice creams/blocks, and there is a small selection of food available too.

This is a great activity to do in any weather.

Note: There is a ladder at the end of the tour which you climb to get out of the caves however it’s nothing too strenuous. There are toilets located at the cabin where you start and finish the tour.

Ngarua Caves Adrenalin Rush
mar. 2021 • Par
Much better than we expected. Could I recommend to the family owners to invest in a new sign and better advertising at the top, especially for car parking with a big arrow We nearly drove on by because (and I’m sure like many) we nearly didn’t read the bit where it says ‘keep driving down for good parking’ etc. It’s very easy on first appearances to think that the small gravel parking area at the entrance site ‘is it’ and therefore not much of a place. If you made this area more inviting and exciting more people would drive down to the Base. We had a great time at the Cave and highly recommend - with several Adrenalin rushes during the tour!

The cave itself is interesting, and the guide was friendly and informative. Well worth a look if you have moderate fitness. Nice and cool on a hot day too!

Well worth the stop

We were positively surprised....the entrance doesn't look much but the walk through the caves is really interesting. Well worth the stop at the top of the hill
