It was ok. Go once sorta experience. The guy who took us was a bit rude to the family that was on my group and could handle situations with more grace and friendliness

Really impressive caves. It was a very rainy morning and we were the only ones being guided through the caves by an informative and friendly guide, which felt very special. Definitely worth a visit, can thoroughly recommend.

.Best of the best. Well guided and awesome. At 80 yrs young I still managed even the ladder at the end and having lunch there was the icing on the cake - fabulous food.

We did the Caves tour in the morning, with Nancy. The drive down from the road is a bit steep, but is sealed all the way.
It was an excellent tour; the caves are amazing, the track through is well-built, and there are short foot bridges too. It's not rushed at all, so you don't feel like to have to keep up ... there's time to walk as carefully as you need, or to stop and really look at the formations and take photos.
Everyone gets a hard hat!
The Cottage has tea, coffee, nibbles, and a small souvenir shop.
The entry is $30 adult (can't remember the child rate!) and well worth it for a hour or so stop off on your travels over the Takaka Hill.

Lovely hidden attraction. Definitely worth the visit. The guide was informative and funny. We return every year to see any changes. Our granddaughter loved it.

I have, over the years, been to takaka a lot and always driven past.
This time the kids begged to stop so we did and I wish we had done it sooner. Family friendly, informative and wow was I suddenly aware of just how old this world is and we were right inside it. Great staff and guide, hard hats could possibly do with an update? but we were safe and well informed. Extremely affordable for a tourist attraction and we still talk about it! Thank you.

Amazing! There is so much decoration in this cave compared to others I’ve seen- high density of stalagmites and stalactites. It is so open you can walk through it easily and they’ve set up stairs and lighting. Also the tour guide was 5star brilliant. A must see.

I had the best time! An amazing affordable experience that gives you the ability to see the formations up close, and there are even interactive parts where you can touch and feel the cave. Plus seeing the Moa bones was so cool. Great tour guide who was super knowledgeable. So glad I stumbled upon this!

Ok, so, I have admit, I grew up in Takaka and during my childhood and adolescence, I visited the Ngarua Caves .......................................... Never.
Fast forward 3 plus decades and I finally did! Although this experience would have been wasted on my former self.
Highlights.
- Views over Tasman Bay
- The great conversation and information my guide had about the caves and history of the area (which I live in and didn't know)
- How amazing and unforgiving nature is
- The coffee!
I always knew there was marble under "our" mountain, but wow, it show's you up close and personally (yes, there are touch points in the caves) where it comes from.
There's a lot of history in the caves, from when they were discovered, and the path through the caves is well done.
You will find a lot to love about this tour, the caves are compact so you see alot in a short space, and get to take it in too.
Listen when you're down there, and really listen when they blackout the caves, it's engulfing!
I like that the tours are only 45 minutes long, there's good coffee and a gift store with snacks and souvenirs. There carpark has multi-million dollar views and space to spread out, bring your picnic and enjoy yourself.
It's a cool (usually dry) and lovely 11 degrees underground, so dress comfortably, sensible shoes and take a jacket and your phone to take as many photos as your time allows. It's an easy walk through with a few steps and a ladder at the exit, but nothing too tricky to navigate.
Now, if you've thinking it's a long way to go, then add in a trek around the Takaka Hill Walkway or a visit to Canaan Downs, all close by (Canaan Downs is a bit of a trek along a gravel road, but again worth it).
I spent the day on the hill doing all 3 and so pleased I finally visited Ngarua Caves! It will be a return visit with visitors for years to come for me.
If you are thinking of summer as your visit. BOOK! They get rightfully so, very very busy.
Will return
