La cueva hermosa, sin embargo despues que nos estacionamos era una parque y la cueva esta dentro del parque de niños lo q me decepciono( me imaginaba una reverva natural con arboles y eso) Despues de ver la cueva se nos acerco una empleada con actitud diciendo que teniamos que pagar para ver la cueva pero si nos quedabamos en el parque era gratis. (ironic) Despues que seguimos al bohio para pagar le pregunte si aceptaba credito, lo cual se enojo y nos dijo que nos fueramos. Todo se sintio como una estafa y su comportamiento inaceptable. Si recomiendo que vayan en tour asi tienen la
experiencia completa.

Administration Needs to Change

I will be submitting a formal complaint to the municipio of Loiza. This cave is managed by the municipality yet the administration of the cave is unstable, not consistent, does not provide adequate safety resources, does not charge all admissions fairly nor opens nor closes at the specified times. As a tour operator this inconsistency and lack of proper administration is troublesome both to the guide working the tour and to my clients and the un professionalism and rudeness from the administrator leaves much to be desired. Not to mention that the administrator threatened my guide to lock the entrance to the cave to a natural resource that should be available for all during the times specified.

Overall either the municipality needs to change administration, fix the issues described above or our organization will no longer take customers to this cave along with prompting the media, Discover Puerto Rico, Dept of Natural Resources and other tour operators of these issues.

* I will remove my review when and only when these issues are corrected!

It wasn't just a cave.....It was immersion into Puerto Rican Folkways

Destination Puerto Rico recommended this trip when our tour to Ponce was cancelled because of the earthquakes. We heard CAVE and small museum, but what we got was an immersion in Puerto Rican history. The cave is interesting and our guide was excellent. She said that she had limited English, but it was fine. After we toured the cave we went to the small but excellent museum where we learned a great deal about the Loiza festival of St. James and were told about the vijegante masks and the story of th festival.
After we spent about an hour in the museum there was a exhibition of "turban tying" -- the turbans that the Puerto Rican women wore. Was fascinated to hear that where the knot of the turban was placed indicated a status: looking for a male, married or widowed. It was a wonderful demonstration, with me as the "model".
Following that a group of musicians demonstrated bomba playing. Again, bomba is very Puerto Rican, and every area has a different beat.
All in all a wonderful tour that was REALISTIC, not faked for tourists.
Caveat: I don't know if the turbans tying and bomba players are always at this locations, so I'd check first and ASK to be there when they are. It was a fabulous experience.

Small, but Impressive

The Cueva Maria de La Cruz in Loiza is a natural wonder. This cave can be found in a public park located directly behind a school and off the main road. It is thousands of years old and where remains of the first known visitors to the island can be found. There are no markings of any type so I would recommend taking a guided tour to learn about the history of the cave.

Small but interesting

Luckily we had a good guide here else it would have been just a rock edifice.

We got the story of cave versus cavern. The geology of the area.

Natural bee hives in the cave.

Writing paper (sort of) that pre dates papyrus.

Not visibly spectacular but interesting nonetheless.

The cave isn't spectacular, but the history is.

The cave sheltered three different Indian tribes native to Puerto Rico and then Africans that escaped slavery. This cave is more of a large open area than a deep cave system. The cave measures 50 meters wide, 25 meters deep, and 30 meters high. Because it is open, there is light inside and you can get some photos. There are a number of bee hives on the ceiling of the cave. Also, you will find traces of candle wax where Taino religious meetings and classes teaching native culture still meet today.

Nature!

I'm a nature lover so for me it's definitely worth a visit if you are close by. It's a small open cave in a park but nonetheless amazing. The park has a few swings for the kids, some beautiful ceiba trees and a small kiosk where you can get something to snack on.

Lovely local visit with unusual experience

We were warned by other reviewers to beware a scam, so unfortunately we went in with our guard up.
When we arrived, a gentleman escorted us to an information centre with a small collection of local artists displaying their wares.
It was about $14 for two to be toured around the site. The guide admitted that she was uncomfortable with english but did a great job explaining the highlights of the site. The price includes a short tour of the cave and a tutorial of how to create a traditional women's headscarf. The best was information about the local music la Bomba! We asked performances and were invited to see a performance of our instructor's son in Carolina, as his group, the Tambores Calientes, only had weekend performances in old San Juan.
You do not need to pay anything to view the cave, but we were happy to support the local community.

An important historic and cultural park

Depending on when you go this place may be bustling or quiet but in either case it is worth a stop. The ancient cave is interesting since you can get close (but don't touch!), especially the wild honeybees you can see whose combs are hanging from the walls. The trees and plants at this park are impressive. If you are lucky there will be a cultural demonstration, perhaps the local Afro-Caribbean bomba dancing which is unique and impressive. There are several things to do here but clearly, like a lot of P.R. they don't have a large budget so stop by to support this place but if there is not much going on, just go find another beautiful sight on the island and don't complain.

Excelente lugar para disfurtar al aire libre o explorar la historia de nuestros antepasados. Santuario de abejas, hermosas Ceibas, atracciones para los mas pequeñis y in execelente espectaculo visual.
