Very interesting and a bit disturbing. Really enjoyable and informative. Quite chilly underground. There are many informative video presentations along with equipment from the cold war and nuclear development age. Very reasonably priced.

Important information: this is CASH only.
Just outside the village of Kelvedon you turn off the road to follow a beige dusty track across fields, over hills and then down into a wooded dip. Park up and follow the hand painted arrows to the entrance to Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker. To all intents and purposes, it looks like a double fronted brick bungalow in the trees. Walk up the steep steps to the front door and go into the building. Immediately you know it is not a house and you walk into a cage. A taped voice instruct you to pick up a listening device and to follow instructions on the yellow signs. So begin the tour and follow the arrows.
The current owners have done as much as possible to ensure the place looks like it would have done in the 70’s – 80’s, even having someone on their staff to advise who worked there in those times.
The short films throughout the tour had been made as public information advice. They were stark reminders to stay put; stay in our homes where the authorities knew who lived there. In reality this was only so that they could be sure who and how many per household had actually died as only those in municipal bunkers across the country could have any chance of surviving. That’s if they could get there within the 4 minutes. It’s a thought, I wonder when all these politicians vie for the leadership do they realise that their families would be expendable as they would not be housed in the bunker – only those who were necessary to manage the situation. Einstein was right that if the next war is nuclear, then any following wars would be with bows and arrows, as the likely survivors will not have the means or the knowledge to create the society we currently have.
The bunker held 600 personnel and had water, and air filtration systems and even sewage systems; back-up generators and old style communication systems protected in their own Faraday cages as the EMP from the blast would wipe out all electrical circuits.
Apart from the listening devices the tour was self-guided and there was an honesty box at the end to pay the entrance fee and photo permit. There were cameras everywhere so I was sure it is securely monitored.
Excellent insight into what could have been and may yet happen.

A lot of history in this unassuming property. Handsets gave loads of detail for each room. Well worth a visit to see what could have happened if there had been a nuclear bomb.

Fascinating place to see, locked in a time warp as if the crew had just walked out. For an old Cold Warrior like me it was a walk down memory lane to some degree but it will be just as fascinating for the younger generation to see how we were prepared for the unthinkable horrors of a nuclear war. I highly recommend this attraction and applaud the owner for keeping it going and making it available to all.

Fascinating experience of a Cold War government nuclear bunker.
Creepy, grim and a real eye-opener. A time capsule, abandoned in 1994.

Expensive for a family, and not very much to see, it used to be reasonably priced so you didn’t mind that it only took around an hours to go round! And then on top they have no concessions for carers or disabled guests! It’s the only place I’ve been that don’t off that, privately run or otherwise! Will

Can I take my well behaved small dog on the lead
Skrevet 15. juli 2023
Probably not. I don't remember seeing any signs - or dogs - but if photographs aren't allowed, the same probably applies to dogs!
Skrevet 18. juli 2023
There’s a sign saying no so I’d simply ask permission
I took loads of stills so fundamentally the same

Is it suitable for an eight year old girl who is intrigued by the word "secret"?
Skrevet 5. august 2020
Yes. I think an 8 year old would love it. It is not a scary experience. It's more of a campy experience.
Skrevet 6. august 2020
Are dogs allowed? The reviews mention a dog but is this a resident dog as opposed to a visitor?
Skrevet 25. april 2019
I did see another visitor with a dog on a lead but best to visit bunker's website to be sure.
Skrevet 26. april 2019
Do you have any cress and egg sandwiches available in anal cafe? Also, I have a small ferret and was wondering if there was parking available for it?
Skrevet 9. september 2017
Thank you very much Ralph P. Your heart warming story about your frisky rabbits has reassured me that my ferrets will be well catered for. If you visit again we could arrange for our animals to have a play date.
Skrevet 9. september 2017
yes, there is a cafe but choice is limited though it's was quite adequate for us and the 3 kids.
Skrevet 7. mars 2017
How long show you allow for your visit? Do we need to pre-book?
Skrevet 30. desember 2016
No you don't need to pre book but check on the opening and closing times as winter times are shorter. I guess it's as long or as short as you want as there is short films to watch, radio programmes to listen to I'd say approximately 2hrs maybe give or take
Skrevet 31. desember 2016
Sorry, only just seen this. When we visited there was no entry fee just an honesty box where you are supposed to donate...probably why it all looks a little bit shabby but still fascinating
Skrevet 8. februar 2017
How do I get there from the Brentwood Train station? I don't have a car
Skrevet 18. juni 2016
There is a bus service operated by SM Coaches (route 21) that apparently links the station to the bunker. The only alternative would be a 7-mile taxi journey.
