Visiting the Harran ruins is a very interesting excursion from Urfa. It's less than an hour drive south from Urfa towards the Syrian border (border is only 20 km away).
We had our rented car all the time during our 7 days southeastern Turkey tour, so we drove down on our own.
As you enter the town of Harran you'll come upon a square. At the square locals on motorbikes will approach you offering their guide services - decline. They're pretty persisting, two of them followed us, just ignore them.
The new town is to the left but there's nothing to do there. 45' to the right you'll see an old town gate within the ruined walls - that's the entrance to the old Harran historic area, drive through it.
Now, you're in a vast desert space which belonged to once an important town. It occupied a big circular area with four gates like the one you've entered. Gates were named towards the cities they were oriented to - Baghdad, Al Raqqah, Damascus. Here, you're a bit confused where to go.
Drive the main road slightly uphill and when on top you'll see where to drive further (you'll spot the beehive houses, the University tower, etc..).
Beware, roads are not paved, but dust, however we managed with a small Hyundai, just be careful.
The beehive houses are the main attraction. There're hundreds of them, but you must spot a difference.
The better looking are for tourists - they are original, but with much makeup to attract you and no one lives there (there are some 4-5 complexes of such all over the site).
Here, another guide awaits you - if you want to enter you must pay for a tour. We accepted.
First, they give you a tour of the complex - some 7-8 houses in a row one by another. Explanations were really interesting and we had luck having a good guide - both, as a person and with good knowledge presented in good English. Houses inside are very picturesque, though with some tourist decorations like Istanbul tapestry obviously not belonging there, as the houses date back to 17-18c built by Iraqi immigrants. Yet, the architecture is authentic and interesting to see.
After that the guide who's also Iraqi, took us to the "oldest University" site some 10 min walk OW. Here's not much left - you see the old University ruins with the astronomic tower, but I was shocked with present day building on site to "renovate" the site in order to look how it was. That mixture of old and new is unacceptable on such an ancient site and I wonder how the Turkish government allowed that.
The tour concludes at the Harran castle (opposite direction from the University) which is not open to public yet, so you see it only from outside.
Our tour lasted around an hour and we didn't negotiate the price beforehand.
At the end we gave him 200 TL (around 12$). He wasn't completely satisfied with that, but we said we have no more so he accepted. This is to give you a clue how much to pay (we were a party of two).
After the tour we drove around the site for almost another hour.
This was maybe even more interesting as we saw original (not fancy makeup) beehives with real people living there (cannot enter, of course). As others said, children run after you asking for money - you can give them 1 TL coins (it's nothing) or candies if you have. Just take special care if driving as many of them run all around you.

We were invaded by local guides...felt so intimidated that we shot out of the area ASAP. If you want tourism back....you will have to do something about this....as I am not the only one.For me there won't be a next time .....what a waste !

Long drive to get to this location and very close to Syria. These beehive homes are interesting and some are in live in condition and some are not "so much". It is worth the trip and to note the harsh living conditions in the area and the ingenuity of the people to get on with life.

As soon as you arrive to Harran, usually a guy will approach you wanting to be your guide. Be careful, at end of tour, he will demand outrageous fee. He will even drive you to ATM if you say you don’t have any more money. Harran is predominately Arabic. I get the feeling of greedy money hungry culture here, different from Urfa, Mardin or Antep. Harran is very easy to tour yourself. Sights are castle, mosque ruin, beehive houses. For 1 hour of tour, guide will demand 400 to 500TB. So just stay away from them.

Sadly we felt coerced from the minute we arrived in Harran. We have a large overlander that stands out, and it was our own fault for following the locals who harangued us into following them, but the price charged for the guided tour we hadn’t asked for or wanted was extortionate. We’ve had nothing but positive meetings in our 7 weeks in Turkey and it’s people and want to make sure no one else has this negative experience.

People are very bad here.
I traveled all over Turkey.
But it was the worst places for me.
The guide charges a high amount of money. Children hear 1 tl 1 tl.
"I have no money. "
I said.
, "CORONA virus" They said.
The location is great, but unfortunate.
I think some one give educate them.

Not: Ankaradan geldim, Urfaya ilk ziyaretim.

Can you tell me if any of the sites of Harlan are closed on Mondays.
My time is very limited and it is the only day I can visit, otherwise I have managed to avoid all other “ closed Monday” sites in Turkey.
Thank you

Sites in the town of Harran such as the Castle (no entry possible - see from outside only), the city walls, the university ruins, are all open all the time. Not sure about the hours for 'beehive houses' which are open for tourists. There are beehive houses that you could see from the outside near the castle. Just be aware that the begging from the locals around here can be fairly aggressive.
