Tagong Temple is in the heart of the town right next to the main square. The local people were friendly and the young children took great delight in sliding down the concrete stair rails, all dressed in their warm winter clothing.
We visited each day and sat in the sun watching everyone go about their daily rituals.
There was never anyone at the gate so no entrance fee charged.
Welll worth spending an hour or two here, Tagong is an awesome little town!

Nice temple. The monks are friendly and seem to like visitors. It seems to be more locals than tourists so it feels more authentic.

This is an incredible place to visit. It is not a tourist attraction(although we were warmly greeted by all we met), it is a very real monastery. The monks are so tolerant of outsiders coming in, but obviously some respect is expected in return. Absolutely beautiful monastery. Lots of visitors, in Tibetan dress, who wanted to be photoed with us as much as we wanted to be photoed with them. All around the monastery are huge wooden and brass prayer wheels, and across the road a stupa with great views of the town. Go, and show respect, and you will receive a warm welcome

I may have just visited on a bad day as I didn’t feel I could get a good grasp on the history. Perhaps it was because there was no one collecting the entrance fee and no handout to explain what you were seeing. I tried to engage a few monks but without speaking Chinese I was not able to communicate. The main temple is VERY ornate. I was personally a bit put off by the neon lights surrounding the Buddha. It all seems at odds with the simplicity of Buddhism. The row of prayer wheels are definitely worth seeing.

Went there on the 15th of the month during Tibetan new year, there were many local families there, busy time. The monastery is home to many important historical & religious relics. When I was there, no entrance fee was charged. There is one public bus leaving from Kanding bus station around 8:30 am and the final destination is Tagong. The trip takes about 3 hours and it costed me only 20 yuan.
Also, highly recommend to go to Tagong grassland nearby. It offers a great view of Yala Mountain.

Has alot of these circles on the outside of the temple and locals go arround the temple and swipe them, this is for free
But entering the temple has small fee , you can pay and get inside but nobody speaks english so you cant really ask questions /communicate so do homework before or you can pay to take a couple of pictures

Very rich history that goes back a long long time. We visited on the eve of a 5 day celebrations and they are busy decorating the monastery. We're told that the place will be swarmed with thousands of devotees for the next 5 days.
One have to take off shoes, no hats, no sunglasses allowed as a sign of respect.

I would like to know is there any possibility to spend a few days in Monastery.I want to live together
with monks in Monastery. How can I reach to the monastery.I am coming from Europe. If there is no possibility in your Monastery, could you suggest any other near by.

Hi there, I was there recently. I traveled to the monastery from Kangding city. If you are departing from Kangding, you can take the public bus outside Kangding bus station (the main one) daily around 8:30 am, which costs 20 yuan and takes about 2 hours 30 mins to 3 hours to reach Tagong town (can be a bit bumpy). When you get off the bus, you are right in front of the monastery. Alternatively you can take a shared car from Kangding, which would costs about 60 yuan.
I do not know if you can live with the monks inside the monastery, but they are friendly so worth a try. There is a guesthouse outside the monastery (in the corner across from the parking lot). Good luck!
