We found a nice spot to enjoy our packed lunch and then enjoyed a walk with our dog on the rocky beach. Very quiet and peaceful place.

Even though the Pretty Marsh Picnic Area is mainly a picnic area, it is falling into a state of disrepair. It’s not one of the top selling points of the Acadia National Park. So, from a financial end, it is understandable as to why the maintenance of this area is reduced to a line item at a meeting. Parking, like many places in the Park, is extremely limited. The bathroom stinks. The path that leads to the pavilion and Pretty Marsh Harbor is a challenge to find. A large tree has fallen and obstructed the “path.” This causes the visitor to trample upon new growth of valuable trees and other delicate foliage. Graffiti is prevalent on the tables in the pavilion. The steps leading to the water’s edge of the Harbor are loose. Be careful, as these loose steps pose a safety problem. My guess is that the deterioration of this part of Acadia is due to funding cuts, and the rangers are financially limited in what they can financially do to maintain the area. So sad.

Someone recommended Pretty Marsh as a great spot for a picnic. It's located inside a forest and has limited parking places off a road that ends in a circle. A path leads to a picnic pavilion which was full when we arrived. Other tables were located down a hillside but we weren't sure where they were or how many there were; we just saw people scrambling up and down a hillside while going to and from their cars. An unused handicap-accessible table was located just off the road so we quickly had our sandwiches there, assuming we'd move if it were needed.

With all the other gorgeous spots on MDI, I doubt we'd return here. I also recommend doing a tick check when you leave. We found several on our hats that were on the table...

(It does have an outhouse facility just off the roadside within the picnic area.)

It was raining in earnest & we were coming back from the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. The portapottis were both full with people having issues, so we stopped here for a bathroom break. I would say this area is probably "prettier" when the sun is out. When it's raining, not so much. Many picnic tables. There's access to the ocean. We weren't tempted to come back on a sunny day.

It rained one of the days we were on Mt. Desert so we decided to take a drive around the island and see what we could find. We'd spent most of our week in Acadia and Bar Harbor so it was perfect time to explore.

We saw a sign for Pretty Marsh picnic area and decided to check it out. Glad we did. We were dressed for the rain in our slickers and rain boots so didn't mind getting wet. It's tucked away and there are houses next to it so we weren't sure what we would find. At the time, there were downed trees across the path that we climbed over to get to the pavilion and eventually the beach. It seemed like we were plunged into an enchanted forest, trees waving in the wind, leaves dripping - no one around. The beach is accessed by a set of stairs and I never saw a marsh but I do plan to visit again when I'm in Maine. This time I'm bringing a picnic and will hope for no rain.

Pretty Marsh is quite far from the heart of the national park on Mt. Desert Island, but it is also much less populated. The picnic area is in a beautiful setting and was very quiet and peaceful. Worth the drive to the other side of the island.

If you want to be away from the crowd, surrounded by tall pine trees, smell the sweet balsam fir like it's Christmas, yet it's not freezing, hear the waves gently lapping at the rocks below, and eat your momma's home cooked meal, then come here.
The picnic area is a on the west side of MDI and is off Pretty Marsh road. It's about 30 minutes from bar Harbor.
There are picnic tables far enough from each other that you can actually feel secluded.
i wish I had discovered this place before I had made plans for the week. It would be lovely to have a picnic here then walk down to the rocky shore to spy on starfish on the rocks by low tide.
