I entered the natural area today at the River Road entrance walking in parallel with Halliwell Drive (I parked on Halliwell). Throughout my walk I didn't hear any traffic noise, but constantly heard many birds, including a very industrious woodpecker! I saw a lot of squirrels, and a very large rabbit. Since it is still very early in the spring, there are no leaves on the trees yet, but that allowed the very bright sun to keep me warm when I moved into the deep, dense forest area.

There was a lot of standing water in the bush, and I was glad for the excellent pathway which kept my feet dry, as well as the early spring which guaranteed no mosquitoes yet! This is such a very pristine environment that I recommend it to anyone visiting or living in our community.

The Stanley Park Conservation Area has a long history in Kitchener, having been the Shantz bush at the edge of town at the time my father was growing up back in the 1930s. Then as the Stanley Park community was built as a suburb on the edge of Kitchener, the natural area became known as Shantz Park, and had a small playground added at the corner of Manchester Road and River Road (which with some modernization is still there). Now, finally the name matches the community: Stanley Park Conservation Area - it even has its own deer population!
