Avoid the coffee shop
sep. 2021 • Familie
Coffee Shop review: Avoid this place. As soon as you walk in you’re greeted with a frown and an attitude. A cafe in a cemetery should really employ empathic people with good mannerisms.

So many graves vandalised
feb. 2021
The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board has removed memorials and grave markers of thousands of graves allowing new burials, walls, mausoleums, walkways to be built over the top of them. Total disrespect for this West Australian sacred site.

Saying farewell to loved ones
mai 2020 • Venner
Well you can’t say it’s an enjoyable expensive as you are saying Farewell to a loved one. The grounds are good and we went to the office and they were very friendly and helpful when selecting items and seeking information.

The law is not always decent
jul. 2020
In Western Australia, graves are not occupied indefinitely, unlike Victoria where graves are occupied in perpetuity. Although the Karrakatta cemetery adminisation is legally entitled to reuse old graves, this causes great distress for family members. Several of my relatives are buried in Karrakatta. I am sure that they thought that they would rest peacefully for eternity. By the way in Perth, being 'in Karrakatta' is a metaphor for death

Desecration of headstones in redeveloping Karrakatta
mai 2020
I am concerned that headstones are being removed and plots developed for new burials. With all the space that is available this should not be allowed to happen?

Deplorable destruction and disrespectful.

I can't put poppies on the graves of the first landers at Gallipoli on Anzac Day as the headstones of the ones I used to visit are no longer there.

Heart and gut wrenching misery
nov. 2019
I flew from overseas to say goodbye to hundreds of my family buried there since the 1800's.
Spent the whole day distressed deeply ro find so many of the family graves have been destroyed in their Redevelopment program and many more under threat.
My Grandparents, Uncles, Great Uncles who fought in both World Wars are ro be buried under a huge Mausoleum being built, currently. Their graves covered in workers rubbish, drink cans, pie packets.
I had nowhere to put flowers or anything was there ro mark where some of my family lay.

Atrocious grounds; Destroying memorials; Disrespecting the graves of our loved ones
mai 2020
Karrakatta Cemetery, which is maintained by the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board of Western Australia (MCB), has been horrendously neglected and left to "fall to ruins" over several decades.

As well as this, the MCB undertakes a "Cemetery Renewal" programme which has ruined thousands of family graves.

Areas they see fit are zoned and considered for redevelopment, resulting in mostly empty land. Hundreds of headstones are either moved away from their graves, plastered on a wall, destroyed or discarded.

Families don't have a choice; the most they can do is submit an application explaining "why" their family's grave shouldn't be redeveloped, or fork out thousands of dollars in grant renewal fees. (Unfortunately, both are commonly rejected if they disrupt the MCB's "visions.")

In such renewed sections, new graves are built between existing graves, leaving no marker or evidence of previous burials.

Several of my family's graves at Karrakatta have been redeveloped; all of which have had their headstones discarded. Many more are at risk of vanishing.

The sections that aren't lawned - which is most - are rarely maintained and exhibit the effects of horrendous neglect and mistreatment. The leaf debris is repulsive, branches are scattered and tree roots damage headstones and grave surroundings.

This mixture creates a dangerous environment for visitors - especially the elderly. I've also heard of snakes lurking in the tree matter.

Despite sustained backlash from thousands of concerned West Australians, the MCB and McGowan Labor government continue to ignore and oppress calls for this reprehensible programme to be scrapped.

I had to take down my previous review after receiving a warning from the MCB. They informed me that my use of photographs (that I took) was "illegal" and that I must "desist continuing to act in a matter that is inappropriate" in my online presences.

Gone but not forgotten
sep. 2019
I have recently returned from Karrakatta Cemetery where one of my best friends was interred. The cemetery is well laid out and beautifully maintained. Although the crowd was larger than expected, everything went smoothly. I must commend the Karrakatta Cafe, it has a wide range of snacks and serves good coffee, plus milkshakes and other drinks..The easiest way to get to the cemetery is by Fremantle line train, there is a station at the main gate.
