This museum, in a small corner of County Kerry, is well worth a visit if you want to know more about the Irish way of life in the past.
The first thing that you notice is the lack of every thing being behind glass and inside display cabinets, although some fragile and precious bits obviously are,and whilst there are notices around about not handling the objects, nobody shouts at you to "don't touch" if you should need to feel or touch a piece.
Lots to look at and an hour or two could easily pass without you realising, but in this corner of the world time is not mean't to be hurried anyway.
The staff of one, when we visited, were very helpful and knowledgeable and giving their time freely as it is not profitable and completely run by volunteers

Although this little museum is a bit off the beaten track, we managed to locate it without the aid of a GPS. It doesn't really look like a museum from the outside, and I was convinced that they were closed.. but thankfully I was wrong.
Often the sheer size of museums can be quite daunting to the visitor, but this small museum was really fascinating! We had the curator take us round to show us the highlights of the collection - and there were many, let me add, but he was just so enthusiastic about what was on display that we were totally focussed on each of the artifacts! His passion for his work was contagious and we were urged to pick up, touch etc etc - so unlike many museums where many restrictions are in place.
There were such unusual things on display too, like the rowing boat that Roger Casement used to get ashore from the U- boat and pieces of cable used in the Transatlantic connection near Valencia Island, in fact, the collection had something in it to suit all tastes.
What impressed me too, about this museum, is its outreach into the community, by providing classes so that the skills used by our forefathers can be kept alive... so there are gardening classes, knitting, sewing and weaving classes and apparently these are enthusiastically attending by the youth.
Although you won't find high-tech equipment in the displays, and the wooden floors may creak a bit, the wealth of experience to be gained from a visit to this museum is inestimable, and I cannot reccommend it highly enough!
