..if we combine the visit of this very modest museum with the disturbing discovery of the boat cemetery of the (late..) Aral Sea. Everything describes a tragic reality and gives full meaning to the cynicism of the Soviet authorities.

Traveling to Muynak and traveling to the Aral Sea are different. Most of the people think that the Aral Sea is near Muynak and easy to go there. Yes, It was true , However, because of the drying, the Sea distance between Aral Sea and Muynak got longer. As an example the distance between Nukus and Muynak is about 200 kilometers and from Muynak to Aral Sea is about 250 kilometers.
At half past nine we started our trip from Nukus. About 11 am we went to the “Nayman Shayxana” and had breakfast there. We left there after one hour and at half past four we went to the Muynak and we had dinner there. From 5 we visited Muynak museum. There are animals like wolves, big cats like “Mallim pishiq”, foxes, birds like “Qirg’awil, ducks, gees, eagles and “Qaruy” (Qara- black, Uy- house). In the past, people lived in Qara uy. Because those kinds of houses are very comfortable for moving and rebuilding. After central muynak museum we went “Aral Sea Historical Museum” near the Ships Cemetery. There are a lot of things and pictures depended on the Aral Sea. Before going to the hotels near the Aral Sea we went to the “Ustyurt Plateau” and continued our way.
About 10 pm we came to the hotels called “Yurk”. There are 10 “Qara Uy”s and we had lunch there. I advise you to take a notebook with a lot of film, games or group activities with you because after passing Muynak there is no internet connection so take something interesting. And one more thing: if you want to travel to the Aral Sea you should plan it in summer because sun rising and evenings are very beautiful and unbelievable. In summer you can watch stars and sleep outside. We stayed one night In the “Yurk” and in the morning about 10 am we left there and went to the Aral Sea beach in 30 minutes. In the beach we saw bubbles. According to the drivers words “Salt makes bubbles”, because there is 77% of salt in the water. And the most interesting information “If you swim in the Sea, You do not get sick because of the salty water. We went there in a cold weather so that we could not swim. We tried to find and picked shells (ракушка) from there and we went to the “Karawansaray Kurgancha”. There were Beautiful big stones. Our next stop was “Kanyan” big stones range. And last place was “Sudochie”(Suw—water, Duzshi-unleavened) and after that we went back to the “Nayman shayxana” to have lunch at half past six. Then we came back to Nukus after wonderful long two days trip.

Speaking about Uzbekistan, tourists immediately come to think about the tragedy of the Aral Sea. Recently, tourism has begun to develop rapidly in the territory of our country, and the topics of visiting the Aral Sea are increasingly being discussed.

In case you decide to visit the Aral Sea and witness the whole disaster, this review will describe all the details and tips that will be useful to you on your trip.
Let's start with the fact that transport is accessible for you, for this case I can recommend the company "Besqala tour agency", which has many years of experience in such transportation. The cost of the trip includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. The price varies depending on how many attractions you visit. What I liked was comfortable, spacious, passable transport such as: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (4x4). The drivers have a lot of driving experience, you will not need to worry about whether you are on the right track, since they basically do not use GPS, they know this area like the back of their hand. But there is one point, you should take an interpreter with you. since the drivers do not know any foreign languages, except for Russian and Karakalpak.

The trip begins with a departure from Nukus at 7 o'clock early in the morning. The plus is that you yourself can choose the point of departure. On the way you will meet three populated cities - the first Khojeyli, then Kungrad, which is about two hours away. Speaking of Kungrad, when you leave town there is a nice place called “Nayman Chayxana” where you can have a coffee or a good snack if you are hungry. A large number of different goods are present in this cafe, from household items to motor oils.

After an hour and a half, we will reach the next well-known, once port city of Muynak. It will give you a lot of emotions, you will meet hospitable people. According to the plan, you will have dinner in an ordinary local house, one room will be allocated to you, there you can also chat with the family of this house, I think this is better than a cafe or restaurant, since you will plunge into the customs of the people, and as for me it gives a special atmosphere. There is a museum in the city, the entrance to which is paid for by the organization, the museum contains a lot of memorable photographs, canned food, which were produced during the Soviet Union, there is also an opportunity to watch a short film, in the cinema, about the history of the Aral Sea. Not far from the museum, you can walk around the cemetery of ships lined up in a row in honor of the memory of the Aral Sea disaster.

Leaving the city, we move towards the sea. It should be said right away that the road is very bad, deserted and bumpy, you can see how people live in remote corners of the republic. I will mention one moment, the best season for travel is spring, as in winter, due to snow or rain, the roads are washed away, which makes the trip boring, protracted and difficult. Climbing the Ustyurt plateau offers wonderful views of the canyon and sharp cliffs, which is an excellent chance to take a good photos against a post-apocalyptic background. The way to the yurt camp takes about two hours, depending on the conditions. Getting into the camp (which is located on a plateau) offers a panoramic view of the sea, as for me a very good location. The camp has about 10 yurts, there are all conditions, a mini dining room, it is possible to make a fire at night and gather around it and have a good time. Looking at the beautiful starry sky, talking about yurts, each has 4 clean and comfortable beds and a stove in case of a cold snap, but the disadvantage is that you yourself have towatch the flame and throw firewood, and all yurts have lighting. After a long journey, depending on what time of day you arrive there, breakfast, lunch or dinner will be provided.

The moment that we have been waiting for has come, it will approach the Aral Sea. It takes about 10 minutes to get there by car, as you still need to go down the plateau. Once at the coast, it is problematic to approach the water, since the surface is not sandy, but clay. But the view of the sea and the plateau itself is wonderful. I was very happy to be there, to spend a great time with wonderful and interesting people. I advise you to visit such places, because this is an experience and a memory that will remain for a lifetime!

The museum provides a sad timeline of the modern Muynak history.
A short but sad and emphatic story starting from the turtle meat and fishery production, thriving fishing can plants and ending with the cotton fever and the resulting disaster.
It nicely accomplishes the ship cemetery which is situated just nearby.
Do not overlook the theater which shows the only movie - named " How the Aral was looking like?" in Russian or English, according to the visitor's choice. The chronicles from the past are remarkable and sad, and I am not sure could be easily found online. Not to be skipped.

Ex lago d’Aral
Ci tornerei...

I really had very high expectations but this place fell pretty much short of them; I know that there is a certain amount of pictures that were taken in the 50's and the 60's, depicting life when the Aral Sea was at it best; in the two story building we only got to see a short video and a couple of pictures; the second floor features some paintings, mostly recent and the ground floor packs a lot of typical products of the region along with some (few) memorabilia of the old times; after all it fails to give you the real perception of the tragedy of the Aral Sea and I would suggest that you skip it and opt for a guided tour on a 4x4 and cross the seabed to the camp where water still lies on the seabed; you will sure get the chance to realize the immense size of the catastrophe better than in any museum

Da non perdere la visita a questo museo. Anche se la storia del lago d'Aral è ben nota, è impressionante vedere le foto di un mondo scomparso, una cittadina che viveva di pesca ora circondata dal deserto. Le dimensioni del disastro sono palpabili.
