Located in the center of town and with easy parking. Nearby there are several gastronomy venues. When you pay admission you access stairs that reach the area where the church building and towers are. Nearby there is also a courtyard on the opposite side, down a slope. The interior retains quite a lot of original furniture and structures.

This weather church is located in the middle of the village. If you walk around it it is impressive. Not large in size, but impressive because of all the walls and defensive structures. The entrance is only 15 L and man not a problem. You reach the church via a covered dark staircase. The church is now more of a museum with all kinds of special artifacts from the area. The lock of the door at the back of the church that leads to the sacristy is special. But also beautiful benches and triptychs.
You can enjoy walking around the church and see all kinds of special fortification parts from the past. Wonderful to stroll around quietly for an hour.

Larger and more expansive than the other fortified churches. This complex boasts a couple of curtain walls and a fine church in the middle. Interesting features abound including an interesting medieval doorway and impressive alterpieces.

My wife and I visited this well preserved fortified church. While the church itself has a lot of things to see, I think it is very worthwhile to see it with a guide to get a better understanding. Luckily, our guide also had a great sense of humor that made it even more enjoyable. The Biertan fortified church is a Lutheran fortified church in Sibiu County, in the Transylvania region of Romania. It was built by the ethnic German Transylvanian Saxon community at a time when the area belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. Briefly Roman Catholic, it became Evangelical Lutheran following the Reformation. Together with the surrounding village, the church forms part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two best things to see are the prison for unhappy couples and the Catholic Tower. In the first, couples were put in this single room with one bed and one table and had to stay here until they worked things out. The Catholic Tower is where people who still considered themselves Catholic were put until they changed their mind. That's one way to convert people. All in all, an interesting place to visit to little Biertan.

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the region. The setting is very beautiful and it’s fun to explore the church and the surrounding walls and towers. The church had an impressive polyptic on the altar. 1 hour max needed. There’s paid parking just below in the main square (you can’t miss it as you drive into town).

The peculiarity of Biertan is that it hosts a fortified citadel of medieval origins, built to protect a Gothic church.
In 1993, the fortified church of Biertan was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It can be visited every day from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 19:00, with a short break at lunchtime, except on Saturdays when the closing time is brought forward to 17:00
Entrance fee 15 lei, parking along the road, at the foot of the church. The toilets, although indicated, remain in an area not accessible to the public, at least when we went there. She is often mentioned in the film “The nun”

It's not big, but if it's a UNESCO World Heritage site, does it have to be visited? Well, you can do that if you're passing through. Would you want to come here especially...?

The building works have started in the XII century, got finished in the 1400's , and got its current shape -at least the church, the fortification have been expended and modified through the entire middle ages. And is still standing , hopefully for many centuries to come.
The church can be found towering over the main square of Biertan - you can park a few dozen of meters from the entrance - but mind to pay the parking taxes - entrance fee is 15 Ron (about 3 Euro) , but you can only pay in cash.
The church is impressive , late gothic style - the arches of the ceiling are very impressive, well maintained , beautiful , the altar is worked with great details, the organ is also impressive. And a true gem is the lock of the vestry - an assembly that is composed of 19 different locking mechanisms - wining a prize at the 1900's Paris world fair (and is still working today).
Also interesting - outside of the church is the Catholics tower - a small chapel of those who did not convert to Lutheranism ...and was kept for those as a place of worship.
The small museum and the "reconciliation chamber" - used for centuries for the couples with marital issues.
The mausoleum tower with the tombstones of bishops are also interesting.
Overall a great experience when you are in the area I do recommend you put this place on your travel agenda - it is well worth it.

Hi, kcmedic4203. What would you like to know about this attraction?
My mother in laws mother grew up in Transylvania and went to this church. She passed away in her home here in the US with her family at her side. Her name was Irma Rizzetello maiden name Markus. The family that lives in Germany contacted this church and had them set up to have the bell ring on 10/24 , the day we lay Irma to rest by her husbands side in Buffalo, NY. I would love to be able to get a recording of the bells being rung on 10/24 in honor of Irma to give to my mother in law to keep. Do you know if this would be possible and if so any contact information would be so thankful. Thank you for any help you can give.
Thank you

Hi, called the local priest, Ulf Ziegler and I found out that the bell is not ringing for the time being, due to restoration process. It will take some time to be back in use (probably next year). I'll keep you posted.

Best way to visit Bietran w/o a car, taxi or tour?
Traveling form Sibiu to Sighisora in early June.
Skrevet 28. mars 2016
Hi,
I recommend taxi. From Sighisoara to Biertan are around 30 km. The cost should be around 20$.
Have a nice trip,
Liviu
