This is one of the biggest reasons why I love day trips; they take you to places I never would have visited or known about.
St. Dimitrii was the first stop on my day trip to Bulgaria. It's a steep climb to the top so you need to watch your step. I was a little nervous since I'm afraid of heights.
My guide, Narcis, was knowledgeable and explained what we were seeing and its significance.
It's pretty amazing to see a monastery built into a cave and realize St. Dimitrii lived here and the religious impact he had for his country and community.

We booked a private car from Bucharest, Romania to visit this Monastery in Bulgaria. It is gorgeous and very spiritual. The history of this saint and the location is worth learning about. The chapel is beautiful and you can leave your prayers/wishes at the entrance. You can climb up the rock structure to the rooms and small chapels at the top. Every corner has some ancient painting and story. A must see and worth the time. The drive and border crossing is very easy as well. I highly recommend this site.

Although this does not enjoy the UNESCO World Heritage designation of nearby Ivanovo, this monastery is a lovely example of the rock churches and monasteries in this part of Bulgaria. The first mention of this monastery was in a 15th century Ottoman tax register. This is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

A stop at this monastery was included in a day trip I booked from Bucharest to northern Bulgaria. The stop at the monastery was brief, but it was beautiful to see!
They even had some lovely items being sold at relatively inexpensive prices. I am thrilled with the cross bracelet I purchased as well as the hankie I bought for someone as a gift.
This place was truly beautiful and wholesome.

It is an unusual place for the monastery is set in the rock. It’s quite popular, not too far from Ruse. I should say it’s a must see !

The monastery's particularity is that it is embedded in the natural landscape, in this case, a rock.
It is nestled into a steep cliff and its caves were carved by monks between 1185 and 1396, during the Second Bulgarian Empire.
It is the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria and it is impressive. It's unique and everything around it, from the location to the landscape, is absolutely beautiful.

Visited Basarbovski Rock Monestary in Basarbovo. Church in small caves in the side of a hill with many steps to climb. Building a new church at ground level but not done yet. Tribute to Saint Dimitar Basarbovski from 12th century.

If you are around Ruse and you have a couple of hours to kill, this place is a must-visit! It is located in the valley of the Rusenski Lom river, just 10 km from Ruse, and it is the only still functioning rock monastery - although there is a recently built church in the yard.
The most famous inhabitant of the monastery was St Dimitrii Basarbovski, born in the end of the 17th century in the nearby village of Basarbovo, who spent all his life in the monastery. His relics were transferred to Bucharest during the Russian-Turkish War of 1768/74. There is a well in the yard of the monastery, dug by St Dimitrii, and its water is believed to be healing.
After some years of decline, a monk named Chrysanthemum, Hrisant in Bulgarian, came in 1937 and started to revive the monastery.
You need to be careful when going up to the small chapels in the rocks as, although there are hand-railings, the stone steps are steep and might be slippery sometimes.
As it is a religious site, just be mindful to dress accordingly and restrain from making noise and disturbing the monks.

What are the ways to get here from the port in Ruse. I will be on a riverboat and have a day to visit but no transportation. Taxis? Tours available? Buses? Many thanks for the help...
Skrevet 11. juni 2015
Hi,
The easiest and quick way to visit the place is by taxi. Allow 2 1/2 to 3 hours for the whole trip and visit. Since you are on a tour on the river, your agent should know about the organised visit to the monastery and the various excursions from the port.I saw at least three buses with tourists groups when I visited the place.
Good luck and have a nice trip.
