Take a walk ot take the tram
jul. 2021
You can take a walk down Smith St or you can take the tram. The walk takes a bit longer, but it's more interesting. Smith St is a bit grungy but there are lots of cafes, shops and so on. The 86 Tram is quicker, but you don't really get the feel for the neighbourhood.

Smith Street is a wonderful insight into the diversity of Melbourne and all that it offers. It is a wonderful street with a range of food, clothing, accommodation and everything else life offers.

Red brick stroll
nov. 2019
A walk back in time, sea of red brick buildings, nostalgic, quite commercial, walked here to get to the Proud Mary cafe.

Eclectic mix of shops and eateries

Its a bit like being taken back in time. Hardly a recognisable global high street name on there - apart from weirdly the Australian McDonalds HQ! From cult brands such as Aesop to great coffees and pizza joints you'll be spoilt for choice

Best place to live in the World
jun. 2019 • Par
Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, NYC would be awesome...

That said, Smith St is fantastic. Everything from burgers to fine dining, Haute Couture to Op Shops

Smith St has it all. Such a diverse, vibrant community that just gets better as more people arrive with all the new apartments, both completed and starting.

Love our home

If you want experience ALL of Melbourne...

Lygon Street gets the hype, Elizabeth Street (along with others in the CBD) get the traffic and The Esplanade in St. Kilda gets the seaside scenery cameras popping. But Smith Street shows off the hipster, culture-cool vibe of Melbourne. If you're a tourist or new in town, this wouldn't be the FIRST place to go, but it's worth a squizz to get a feel for the totality of the town. I prefer it to Collingwood's OTHER hipster avenue, Brunswick Street, because Smith has a higher concentration of worthy stores/restos. (Every out-of-towner should also visit Sydney Road in Brunswick/Coburg for the exotic foreign feel of the place.)

Smith is heavy on dining choices, mostly low or mid-range in price, great ethnic variety. It has some fine places to buy ingredients to cook your own, especially if you're a hippie/vegan/spice fanatic (Friends of the Earth, Organic Wholefoods and The Source). There are funky fashion shops scattered throughout, with a couple blocks of factory discount stores down at the Alexandra Parade end. Strolling the street gives you a look at Melbourne's human variety, from trendoids to down-and-outers hustling spare change. It's one of the few places in Melbourne (aside from art galleries and Koori cultural centres) where you'll reliably run into members of Victoria's Aboriginal community.

I reckon Smith Street is worth an hour's walkabout; even more if you want to wander (or bicycle) the side streets in search of street art. You never know what's been tossed up new! If you're into live music, "The Gaso" (Gasometer Hotel) is on Smith Street proper, but there are bangin' rock venues such as the legendary Tote just a short stroll off it. Should your feet get tired (or you're pie-faced from some pub) the 86 tram shoots straight down Smith to the CBD, so it's EZ-PZ for tourists to navigate. You can DO Melbourne without seeing Smith if you've only got a day or two in town, but if you're around for more than that, missing this place would be like assembling a jigsaw puzzle and leaving a half-dozen pieces in the box.

Really good graffiti and street art, a nice range of shops and cafe's to visit. Really enjoyed going to the converse outlet to buy shoes too. A hidden treasure.

Took the 86 tram from CBD.

Really quiet and lacking atmosphere. Still a few interesting shops to look at. Lots of restaurants mostly Asian. But easy to get to. Allocate up to two hours.

Best balance of all inner north
jan. 2019 • Alene
Lived, known and though moved away I still visit weekly to Smith Street for over two decades. Development and capital may have reduced some flavour (ok read as danger, beggars & visible drugs) but it retains an accepting vibe of all comers. Great variety now in restaurants, bars and retail shops. The one street in Melbourne inner suburbs worth a slow afternoon walk north (shopping) to south (eating, drinking) ... stop or head up Gertrude. Something for everyone and lacks pretentiousness.
