The paper mill "De Schoolmeester" is nicknamed "De Gauwdief". The name is related to the fact that one of the founders of the mill in 1692 was a teacher by profession. The nickname is probably related to the fact that the mill drew water from the river Gauw during its production process. "De Schoolmeester" is a hexagonal wooden tower mill, body and hood covered with thatch. The scaffolding on which the mill stands is flanked by long wooden drying sheds, a total of more than 100 meters long. The current barns date from 1903...before that the barns were even longer. The mill is the only remaining paper mill in the world! The Zaan region alone once had more than 40 paper mills. A mill to be careful with, that Schoolmaster! The basic material for paper production was textile waste, rags, etc., but also old rope. Since 1976, the mill has been owned by the Zaansche Molen Association. Interesting mill to see... especially the length of the drying sheds is impressive.

This is the one and only paper mill that works on wind power. It run by volunteer. It was very interesting to see the paper making proces, from the cotton fabrics to paper. Entrance fee is € 5,00. You got a brochure which is to my opinion the best brochure we've ever got. All the information and the map are there and we could follow the route by ourselves. Later there was a short demonstration how to make a piece of paper from the water full of cotton fiber pulp. It was such a unique experience visiting this windmill.

The paper mill in the Zaanstreek in the Netherlands has a unique appearance. Walking towards it is already very nice, watching different kinds of windmills on your way.
The Schoolmeester as it is called in Dutch is windmill producing paper from rags and plants. it houses one of the first Fourdrinier machines ( a paper making machine). the entire process is wind-powered. It's very impressive when the mill is turning, the sound and the atmosphere put you back centuries ago. Definitely worth a visit!

De Schoolmeester is a unique and historic seventeenth century windmill in the Zaan district in that it is used for making rag paper. The Zaan area was once famous for the production of paper and had 60 such mills. The paper produced there was, among other things, used in printing the American Declaration of Independence. This mill is now the only one still operating. There is a pamphlet that provides for a detailed self-guided tour of the mill following the production process from start to finish. The miller is also often on hand to demonstrate the process. Finally, while Zaan district is famous for it surviving industrial windmills, this one is off the beaten tract and not overrun by tourists.

The paper mill "De Schoolmeester" is one of a kind! the only one in the world we were told bij the operators.
the mill dates from 1692AD. It is located at "het Guispad in "Westzaan". the correct address is important if you want to find the location easily. In case you travel by public transportation take bus 65 or 67 and not like some internet sites state bus 64. From the latter it is a stiff walk and there are virtually no road signs which show the correct direction. By car it will be more convenient. But public transportation does have some extras! The mill it self still has al the original instruments and equipment the produce paper. Big hollander beaters for the connoisseurs, old paper screens etc. the atmosphere is nice and sends you back in time. inside in part of the drying locations there is a small installation giving the spectators some insight in paper history. If you are a paper lover or maker it is certainly worth a visit, interested in wind mills you should go and have a look. The internet site provides you with the details about when and how to visit.
