Unfortunately just like all the gurdwaras, the toilets at Punja Sahib were also a disgrace. I wanted to use them but couldn’t as the floor was all wet and muddy, it was pitch black inside so I mentioned to the “gardener” of the place. He was good enough to take us to a so-called meeting room where there was a basic toilet which we could use and then he locked the room.

The steps to reach the sacred stone are so high, were wet, and there’s nothing to hold on to, the metal railing on one side was all broken and wobbly.

Thousands of Sikhs pass through these gurdwaras, there’s no finesse, facilities are just atrocious. The people in charge have only one motto: to rake money from all quarters.

The entrance to the gurdwara is so dismal, there’s a so-called scanning machine which is all broken, doesn’t work and is still there, years of grime all around, why can’t they just get rid of it and spruce up the entrance?

Tourists not welcome. We were recommended by local friends to visit this beautiful cultural site. Told we cannot leave Pakistan without seeing it. We rented a car, travelled an hour especially but we were not welcome at the entrance. We were asked to show special papers so we had to turn around to came back home. Our friends were very embarrassed when we told them of our experience. Such a shame as we will never have another opportunity to visit!

I had passed this holy Sikh site many times but never had the occaision and the honour to enter this beautiful and religious building. Recently, after having a stop over at Hassanabdal, I decided to go there. I did not have any problem entering the holy place after making a request to the keepers. Removed my shoes and covering my head with a scarve, I was taken inside and was very courteously given a guided tour. I will remember this marvellous visit for a long long time.

My neighbours in Toronto requested us to go Punja Sahib to pay their respect, as I was travelling to Islamabad.
At first we were not allowed inside as the guard said that Muslims are not allowed inside (which is a false statement by the guard) we turned back with broken heart. Toward our car we asked a local Sikh person if he can do something, he asked us to wait for few seconds, in about few seconds we were inside the Gurdawara. What a treat going inside...just amazing...we were provided with a guide who showed us around and took us downstairs where the Punja Sahib was...we took some pictures...head covering and bare feet is must...I asked the guide if I can buy something as a gift for my friends, he said that he will give something which I don't have to pay but will be a gift from Gurdawara to my friends...the hospitality was over the top and much appreciated.
Mr.Ahad (our guide) thank you so much for your kindness.

Gurdawara Punja Sahib is a Sikh religious site and a beautifully constructed temple, dating back to 1830s. For Sikhs all over the world, it's a very sacred place as Baba Guru Nanak Ji along with his disciple Bhai Mardana Ji stayed here. A rock in this place contains the hand print of Baba Guru Nanak sahib and a perennial stream flows from that rock.
The Gurdawara, besides being a very holy place, is also a very nice building of great architectural beauty. Please note that in order to pay respect to the holy place, shoes must be removed before entering the main Gurdawara building and head must be covered, both by men and women.
There are lot of fish (Mahaseer, Tor putitora) in the Gurdawara pool, some of them quite big. These fish always seem to gather around the rock from where the stream originates.
The Gurdawara is an hour drive from Islamabad and a place worth a visit.
