We drove up with a local friend and used up most of a day wandering around Macetown and the nearby gold mining relics. The track is a serious drive, so it's probably best for most people to go on an organised tour, though there are also several tracks that you can mountain bike or hike up to get there.
We walked from the Macetown site to some of the stamp batteries and found that they were significantly in tact - a tribute to the gold miners who hauled all that equipment up the mountains over a century ago!
The settlement area itself is also a lovely spot to picnic or camp, with remnant shade and fruit trees still growing there. Local volunteers are working on restoring much of what remains, so I expect this destination will improve over time.

Huge fun with Nomad tours in their Land Rover up in to the hills at the back of Arrowtown to this old goldfield settlement. Thanks Jo for a most informative and exciting trip. The Arrow River is crossed 25 times each way, bone shaking every time!

Its either walk, cycle or 4WD up the Arrow River just behind Arrowtown.
We took a 4WD trip up here.(Not suitable if the river is high or dirty)
Twenty something river crossings and at the end you get a real taste of how remote this location was for the thousands of goldminers who lived and worked in this inhospitable environment.
Remnants of some of the stone buildings are still there. The Department of Conservation has restored a number of features including a massive water wheel just beyond the town. You can camp down by the river, but remember that you are along way from help if you light a fire and it gets away.
If you go in by 4WD please respect the environment. Its fragile and hoons will see the place excluded for all vehicles.

Our family of 5 (children aged 14, 16, 18) took a full day to get ourselves to Macetown to gold pan and explore. We knew that it would be tight with the sunset at 6.15pm when we didn't start until 9.40am.
The 14yo and I walked over Big Hill (he prefers not to cycle) while the others had mountain bikes and cycled up the 4WD track with many (exciting) crossings of the Arrow River. The cyclists had plenty of time to eat their packed lunches, gold pan and explore Macetown (and wished we had remembered some insect repellent). The 14 yo and I ate our lunch at the top of Big Hill and then made good time coming down to the Arrow River. We had a quick walk into Macetown but only got as far as the reconstructed hut illustrated. We all headed back to Arrowtown along the 4WD track with the cyclists letting the walkers have the bikes for a long gentle down hill section. We were all very weary by 5.45 back at the car having enjoyed the challenges and views of the day.

Our group used Southern Explorer 4WD tours. We hired two vehicles for our party of 10. Picked up from our motel and taken on an informative journey with stops on the way to explain the history of that part, topped off with a light snack of hot homemade soup and rolls with hot tea and coffee at Macetown. A further stop at the end of the road at the Anderson's battery before the return with its river crossings, narrow mountain roads and spectacular Autumn colours. Adrian and Ian gave great and friendly service.
