My girlfriend and I spent 4 days in Morgedal in a wilderness cabin on a cotters farm called Tjonnstaul, to celebrate her 30th birthday. We were looking for a true wilderness experience, to get away from it all. Trees, lakes and mountains were a must and this location provided it all. We were even privileged to have some snow which completely transformed the landscape. Plenty of hiking trails and beautiful scenery in abundance. The log cabin itself was amazing, incredeibly cosy with a wood burning stove which was very welcoming when coming in from the snow. The lack of running water and no electricity (there is a generator if you really can't go without) was not an issue as there is a freshwater stream nearby and plenty of candles and oil lamps for light, creating a real cosy atmosphere in the evenings. Our hosts for our stay, Hamish and Inger Marie were very accommodating and friendly. We arrived by bus on the Saturday evening and were kindly met off the bus by Hamish who drove us the few miles up the hill to the cabin. We'd planned on mountain biking during our stay but with the arrival of snow on our first morning this was impossible. Hamish was kind enough to come up to the cabin with some skis and gave us some tuition and left us to it - our introduction to a great sport in the spiritual home of skiing! Inger Marie kindly picked us up on our last day and drove us into Morgedal and gave us a tour of her bakery, where we sampled some delicious Norwegian flat bread. We spent a couple of hours in the ski museum (well worth a visit) before catching our bus to the airport. To sum up, Morgedal is a beautiful little town, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The spiritual home of skiing. Tjonnstaul cotters farm is an amazing place to stay. A magical place perched atop a hill surrounded by steep rock faces, mountains and trees, right next to its own lake. Very quiet and tranquil. If the great outdoors is your thing, then you really won't be disappointed! Check out our pics!…
