Like the other reviewers, I would say the best thing about this place is the owners: Dory and Allan. Motel is really a misnomer, since you stay in their home (there are three small but comfortable rooms that share one clean bathroom on a single hall) But you eat and hang out in space shared by the owners, and that is a definite plus. I loved that the home was not a more typical bed and bed breakfast in terms of decor. Dory is and excellent cook and made us rockfish one night and soft shells the next. We took out the kayaks and my friend found two prehistoric arrow heads. But by far the best amenity was the hosts themselves. They were generous with their knowledge of the island and their time, taking us fishing and showing us their crab operation. And I left feeling like I had seen the island in a way that would have been impossible on my own.

My whole trip was wonderful, start to finish. Dory met me at the dock to take my stuff to the motel. The room was clean and bright. Bathroom spotless. First night attended a birthday party given for a local senior. Food was super. Dory drove me to Rhodes point. I was told not to miss a trip to Tylerton, so glad I went. Visited Allen's crab shanty. He took me out fishing. Dory, Allen and I went walking on a beach looking for sea glass, buoys Etc.. I loved my time there. Can't wait to head back. Didn't use bikes or kayak but will next time. Slept like a log every night after all the fun.

Dory is the kind of person you feel you've known like a long time yet it's been less than a day. She keeps her place spotless and comfortable with all the amenities of home. Some described it as rustic. I clarify as it's just not 'frou frou' which is A-OK w/me. Dory is generous with her time and knowledge of the island. She made us main-landers feel very welcomed. Bikes and kayaks/canoe were made available free of charge. We took her up on the offer of dinner and they were delicious. My husband enjoyed seeing Allen's working shanty along w/some fishing time with him. So glad I followed a friend's suggestion to visit Smith Island. Dory and Allen made the experience even more special. This visit gave me an opportunity to hit the re-set button. I'll def be visiting again.

Dory and Allen welcomed me into their home as though I were an old friend. The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was conveniently located on the same hall. Dory lent me a bicycle to ride around the island, recommended things for me to do, taught me all kinds of things about the crabbing business, as well as took me to harvest soft shell crabs in their shanty. We even attended the 130th annual Camp Meeting (revival) in the evening. Dory is a great cook, and Allen fried up some soft shell crab for an evening snack. Couldn't have been a better visit! Go!

I want to thank Dory and her husband, Allan, for their great hospitality. I felt right at home at their place and the visit felt more like visiting a friend. The room was clean and comfortable. I loved learning about the crabbing business. I definitely have a better appreciation of it and will never again complain about the price of them on the menu. They are worth every penny and then some. These guys work really hard. Smith Island is enchanting and is definitely a place worth coming back to when one wants to escape the everyday life of work, consumerism, traffic, and the like. Everyone on the Island both at Ewell and Tylerton were so warm and welcoming. I've never experienced anything like this before. I was there for the 4th of July weekend and it experienced a bit of Americana with the kids parading in their decorated bikes and the adults in the golf carts. Dory made sure that I enjoyed all the festivities taking place on the island. She is definitely the hostess with the mostest.
