Very nice place in a beautiful nature setting. The personal is working very hard to make your stay unforgetable. The cruise on MS Bart was as well very very nice. Rooms are a bit small but considering that you are 78 degrees North are ok. The food is very nice with a great breakfast. If you like untouched nature and like to be pampered in the middle of nowhere just go there and have fun !

Romtips: Try to get a larger room as the regular rooms are really small.

Excellent hotel, restaurant and rooms. Wonderful food very helpful personnel.
Spectacular views over Longyearbyen town. A long walk, up hill, from the town. Does keep you fit after eating in the restaurant. A really excellent hotel. I would certainly recommend staying here.

Who would have expected a 5-star hotel in the remote arctic? This was one of the finest hotels I have ever visited. - staff was attentive, helpful. cheerful and discreet. Rooms were basic - this is Svalbard, not Paris - but very comfortable, well appointed and perfectly maintained. Every aspect of the room was perfect. Dinner was a world-class experience and morning breakfast is among the best anywhere. Cant say enough good about this place. Worth a trip across the world to get here

Airport Bus Shuttle waiting, warm and a very friendly driver called Viggo (2nd oldest dinosaur 😊in Svalbard).
Lovely warm welcome at the door and explanation to remove outside shoes. Such a cosy gentle ambient comfortable Hotel. Rooms were spacious and very clean with coffee machine that also gives hot water for tea. Obtain milk at reception if like me you dont like powdered milk.
Staff were all very welcoming and friendly. Had a slight issue with the radiator in room 313, Joseph and a lovely Lady at reception fixed it within minutes.
Best nights sleep ever. So quiet apart from the odd snow mobile passing.
Breakfast omelette delicious with bacon etc added full varied buffet food. Orange marmalade was delicious.
Bar food was lovely and recommend the burger or steak sandwich. Had to pay 40NOK for water, which wasn't clear, but no complaints.
Managed to book an evening meal in their restaurant (book early it gets busy). Wonderful meal again recommend the King Prawn and lobster bisque ravioli.
A trip to the museum was also very informative and a must see recommend. 15 minute walk past the coop and shopping centre.
Sad to leave but will definately be back, once We get over the overnight plus 12 hour delays, missed connections etc....

Hotels have one simple thing to do: give the service that they offer. A bed, breakfast and anything else that they promise that they will do for you. The little things, upon which you rely on the hotel to provide.
Most people who visit Svalbard in the winter want to see the northern lights. Funkenlodge understands this, and has a big sign in reception reassuring visitors that, if they leave their number at reception, if the lights are seen you’ll be called, so there is no need to worry about missing them. We signed up as soon as we checked in. We were warned that we might be woken at 3.00 am, but we assured the receptionist that we were more than happy with this.
We heard nothing in the five nights we were there. Imagine our surprise when, on waking on the last morning, we found a text (yes, a TEXT) from the previous night, not 20 minutes after we’d retired to bed (and well before midnight), to say that the northern lights were on display outside the front of the hotel (it had to be worth a view; the text ended in an exclamation mark). A text? What use is that. We were promised a call. With a ring that would alert, or even wake us up. A text is silent. You need to be awake and alert to see it come in and then read it. You have to be glued to you phone all night on the off chance. Somewhat defeating the whole premise.
To say I was furious about this idiocy is an understatement. The receptionist that morning was apologetic, but could do nothing for me. So didn’t. She promised to speak to the night receptionist so that it didn’t happen again. Well great, but it was our last night, so fat load of good that was for us. Perhaps I’d like lunch on the house? Well thanks, but again, hardly compensation for missing what we’d spent five days trying to see, and utterly useless as we were leaving that morning. Instead, I was offered 10% of the dinner we’d had. OK, not great, but something. Or not: when I got the final bill (emailed when I was on the way to the airport, as the printer in the hotel reception was broken), it turns out that the 10% wasn’t off the full bill, just the food element. So for missing the one thing we were desperate to see, and for which that the hotel had assured us we’d be called the moment it was spotted, we were compensated well less than 1.0% of the total bill.
When the receptionist made the generous offer to do nothing for us, she asked if the rest of our stay had been good. Ignoring the fact that this was like a White Star Line functionary asking somebody in a lifeboat if, other than the whole iceberg incident, they’d enjoyed their trip on the Titanic, it felt churlish to say no. In fact, here were actually a number of annoyances along the way, so I did the very British thing and said it was all fine. It wasn’t. Little thing, like the room not being ready when we arrived, grate.
I get that this can happen if you turn up early, but we hadn’t. It’s just that the hotel (despite having emailed confirmation of the booking to us) didn’t have us down to arrive until the next day (but not to worry, as the room we’d booked was free. For the night we’d booked. But just not available at check-in time for us).
Or the whole “it’s a Svalbard tradition to take your boots off when you come into the hotel and leave them in an open, unguarded area that we take no responsibility for if somebody walks off with them” schtick. That’s great until somebody decides to walk off with the pair of slippers that you’d brought to wear and had left when you picked you boots up to go out in. Left unguarded as there’s nowhere else to put them. Seriously, either provide lockers or take responsibility when somebody walks off with a guest’s property (and at the very least put a bloody great sign up saying that the hotel doesn’t provide slippers so don’t sod off with the ones that you like the look of best).
Fortunately our property was returned, when a guest was spotted wearing them (with the orthotic sole in, which must have been interesting for them), but it was just one more annoyance, that took away from what should have been a great trip.
On the plus side, the hotel is in a wonderful location, and the room had terrific views. It’s just a shame that nobody called us to tell us to look out to see the best view of all: the aurora in full flow.
