I stayed overnight at La Rive Hotel this week, and was extremely impressed with the overall cleanliness and neatness of the bedroom and public areas. Both meals were well prepared and very adequate, as was the service. As an overnight it was excellent value for money, and I will definitely stop over again.

There was no signage up, got at 18.00 to be greeted by a rude and unfriendly owner. The rooms are shocking,toilet was blocked, no hot water, globes taken out of light fittings to save electricity. No extra blankets. Breakfast was R65-00pp, they bring brown bread( Not toasted), then the tea,then the breakfast. Bacon and sausages overcooked. sweetcorn was sour. Outside looks like a squatter camp and the pool is non existant.

It is a fact that a coin has two sides and so has this tale of woe by Me Wendy Ansell. Allow me therefor to give you not a one sided , only partly true, set of facts but a more comprehensive and complete version of events where after you will be able for yourself to decide to what extent you can believe their side of the tale. First off all I wish to inform you that La Rive Hotel has never ever but on this particular day had any problems with its toilet facilities. La Rive hotel is in existence since the early 90 s as a small country hotel. It has 10 en-suite bedrooms which are serviced by 4 geysers. Each of these geysers cater for either 2 or 3 rooms. (In 1994 the then existing Department of Tourism inspected and graded the hotel as a Two Star hotel . The hotel was subsequently further improved . With the coming of the new regime the hotel lost its grading and had again to be graded . Because of the costs involved therein it was decided not again to apply for a grading .) In view of the present economic climate the hotel business has become very slack. Due to this fact and the present day high cost of Eskom power the geysers are only switched on well in advance for the rooms that we know are going to be occupied. It had been planned to accommodate Me Ansell and her companion in room no 5 which is our De Luxe double room, (normally charged for at a higher rate than the price which was quoted to SafariNow for a double room. We gave the lower quote because the hotel is quiet at the moment.). The geyser serving the allocated room, (room no 5), had been switched on well in advance to ensure proper hot water in this room. The entire room had been cleaned and checked (television set included) . To our knowledge it was in all respects fit and proper for use by any guest. When the booking by Me Ansell was confirmed with SafariNow we unfortunately omitted specifically to state that we do not accept credit cards. We accordingly on Friday at about lunch time informed both SafariNow and the client of this fact. A while later, at about 2 p.m. Me Ansell phoned my wife and informed her that they were now at Vaalwater and that she thinks they must have missed the hotel. She then wanted directions as to how to get to the hotel. My wife told her that she had to go back the way they had come and explained where the hotel is situate. Me Ansell said that they would be at the hotel at about 4 p.m. Round about 6 p.m. Me Ansell called my wife and told her that they were still lost and that they were at the gate of a place called The Fold. My wife informed her that The Fold is situate diagonally opposite the hotel about 300 meters away in the direction of Vaalwater and that the lights were on at the hotel building and in its garden. (My wife at this stage was not at the hotel but had phoned me immediately after she had spoken to Me Ansell) After having waited a while after the call by my wife, I and one of my staff members went outside into the front garden of the hotel to see whether we could see Me Ansell’s vehicle. We saw the vehicle coming from The Fold and waited until it drove onto the hotel premises and parked at the side of the hotel and not at the reception sign leading to the front door of the hotel. I immediately went to the vehicle where I introduced myself to Me Ansell and to her companion to whom she refers as “Hans”. I profusely apologised to them for the fact that they had difficulty in getting to the hotel. Me Ansell told me that they had travelled past the hotel from different directions on 5 occasions. I explained that the reason why there was no sign board or light at the gate to the premises was because we were busy with renovations. I thereafter accompanied them, together with one of my staff members into the reception area of the hotel. At the counter in the reception Me Ansell again complained about having driven past the hotel so many times. Mister “Hans” who stood by wanted to know whether I could tell him where Mokolo dam is situate and whether it is close Lephalale. He wanted to know how to get there. I told him that Mokolo dam is not near Lephalale but is in fact close to the hotel but that one had to use a bad gravel road to get there. I took a blank piece of paper and drew a rough sketch which showed the locality of Vaalwater, Lephalale, the hotel and the said dam. He asked for the sketch and I gave it to him. Because I did not want to seem rude as I knew that they knew what amount they still had to pay I did not specifically ask them to make payment but diplomatically asked whether they had cash and said we do not take credit cards. They confirmed that they had cash. Before anything else happened Mr “Hans” again spoke and wanted to know where a certain game farm with a name unknown to me (which was in a black language) was situated. I did not know this place and told him so. He told me not to worry as he had some booklet which he was sure would have the particulars. The request for information by Mr. Hans had distracted me so I did not follow up the matter of payment. I had in the meantime handed the keys to room no 5 to them. I asked them to sign the register. Me Ansell thereupon started writing in the register whilst the male companion stood disinterestedly by. I did not check what Me Ansell was writing in the register. I asked them whether they were going to have breakfast the following morning which they confirmed. I also wanted to know whether they were going to have dinner the following evening. They replied that they were from the Cape and were touring the area and might thus be far away and therefor they did not think so. The unfortunate experience that they had had in getting to the hotel had unsettled me somewhat and this together with Mr. Hans various requests for information furthermore distracted me and caused me to omit to follow up by a specific request for payment. I instead asked my aforementioned staff member to go and show the guests their room and to help them with their luggage which he did. I in the meantime proceeded to the kitchen of the hotel. A couple of minutes later my said staff member came to me in the kitchen and informed me that there was a problem in room no 5 namely that the toilet did not flush but the water was pushing up into the bowl. I could not believe this or understand this as this had never happened before. I thought that I might be misunderstanding my staff member and requested him to accompany me to the public toilets near the reception area to show me what he says was wrong at room no 5. He did so and there illustrated to me how the water had risen in the bowl in no 5 and had not flushed. I immediately instructed him to go to rooms 7 and 9 which are situate between no 5 and the septic tank which serves rooms 5, 7 and 9 and to flush those toilets as I thought that this might solve the problem. I accompanied him and both those toilets immediately flushed and functioned properly. I informed Mr Hans of this fact. Instead of immediately proceed to check the toilet in no 5 to Me Ansell and her companion for the inconvenience caused by the malfunctioning of the toilet and asked whether I could have their things moved to room no 9 which is also a very nice double room and that they could view the tv in no 5 . They agreed to this. (Because it had not been anticipated to use room no 9 that night it had not been arranged with Dstv to have the television set in nr 9 to be switched. I told the guests that they now had both room no 9 and room no 5 at their disposal for viewing television etc. I left the keys to both rooms with them. They saw that the television set in room no 5 was Dstv connected and that it was working. I also immediately had the geyser serving room no 9 switched on. (So they had two rooms for their use at no extra cost.) The following morning before breakfast was served to them, they were asked how they would like their eggs done and whether they would like tea or coffee. Breakfast consisted of 2 fried eggs (sunny side up), a liberal helping of cream style sweetcorn, 3 slices of fried tomato, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 breakfast sausages as well as 2 slices of brown bread each. They requested the brown bread be toasted and this was done. (Had they asked for white bread or for any sauces this would have been supplied to them free of any charge. One tea and one coffee was their choice and this was served to them). A while after they had started their meal I went to them in the dining room. I greeted them with a good morning and asked them whether they had slept well. Mr “Hans” speaks Afrikaans whereas Me Ansell speaks English. He replied “Jaaa, ons het goed geslaap”. I asked them what their plans were for the day and they told me that they were going very far to a 5 star game farm somewhere near Marken. I told them that the route through Lephalale would be the best to take to get there. Nothing was at this stage said about their moving out or of their being dissatisfied with anything. I then proceeded to ask them whether they were going to have breakfast the following morning (Sunday morning) as I wanted to prepare the invoice for them. “Hans” got up and angrily said they are not going to pay. He said they are leaving and that the place they are going to is very far away. I told them that they are liable for 2 days as they had booked for two days. They did not deny this . “Hans” said that they were not going to stay any longer, that they had had problems with a blocked toilet and that this place is not busy, that there are a lot of vacant rooms and that they are only prepared to pay for the breakfast. He asked how much the breakfast was. I told him it is R65.00 per person and added that if they do not pay what is owed by them, they must keep the money for the breakfast as well which they did. No mention of so called unfriendliness was made nor that the accommodation was not up to standard, that there was no hot water, no television, no extra blankets or that breakfast was unsatisfactory (in fact they had finished both their breakfasts except for some tiny scraps of food and 2 sausages which were still on Mr “Hans’s” plate . This was probably still there because breakfast had been interrupted). To avoid further unpleasantness, I turned and walked away and went back to the kitchen. Not more than 2 minutes later I looked from the kitchen to where they had been parked and noticed that their vehicle was gone and that they had left. Unbeknownst to me they had already before breakfast packed their bags and had put it in their vehicle. This they obviously did with intent immediately after breakfast to leave permanently without informing me. After they had left I went and checked the toilet in room number 5 and found that it was functioning perfectly. (the flushing of the toilets in rooms 7 and 9 the previous evening must have then cleared whatever obstruction had caused the malfunctioning toilet in room 5.) I also went and checked the hotel register and only then saw that Me Ansell had omitted to fill in their arrival date as well as the booked date of departure and her surname and all particulars relating to “Hans”. The only description of their identities is “Wendy and Hans” with no surname given and only one alleged Identity number ( I Then filled in the lacking date of arrival and the booked date of departure). These guests had made a booking with us for two days through SafariNow at a price which they knew did not include meals. Only 50% of the cost was paid to SafariNow. If everything was so unsatisfactory up to breakfast, it is inexplicable why they would be willing to lay out additional funds for a breakfast at this place. It is impossible to fathom their conduct as I had set out herein before up to the stage that I had mentioned that I wanted information so that I could give them an invoice if their allegations of unfriendliness, rudeness, etc. is to be accepted. It is suggested that the following facts underline the inference that they had already before their arrival at the hotel, decided that this hotel is too far for their liking from “the five star game ranch near Marken” which they said they intended visiting namely: 1. “Mr Hans’s” statement that he had a booklet which gave him the location of the five star game farm which they intended visiting 2. Their reluctance to complete the hotel register 3. Their avoidance to make payment on arrival as agreed by them with SafariNow (even before they SAW the room) 4. The fact that they did not at any stage before the unpleasantness at the breakfast table mention that they were only staying for one night 5. Their failure to furnish the particulars requested in the register 6. The fact that they had without mentioning it at all before breakfast already packed their bags ready immediately to leave after breakfast with intent not to return to the hotel again. I have received another email from SafariNow which sets out the details of a “review” by Me Ansell of her visit to La Rive Hotel. In the part of my statement proceeding point 6 above, I have already dealt with many of the points now again being raised by her e.g. the malfunctioning toilet, my alleged unfriendliness, rudeness etc. I will for the sake of avoiding repetition not repeat what I had already told above but instead merely ask you to read what I have already stated. In this review Me Ansell says that the pool,( I take it that she is referring to the swimming pool in front of the hotel), is black. If by this statement she is trying to convey the impression that the water or contents of the pool is black then I unhesitatingly state that it is untrue. The insides of the pool is unblemished and the water in the pool is sparkling clear. The entire pool is at the moment covered by two layers of cover. This was done at the start of winter because visitors regard this time of the year as too cold for swimming. The two layers of cover over the pool serve two purposes. The bottom cover is a light blue specially manufactured strengthened safety pool net. The top cover is a 60% density BLACK shade cloth which was fitted to keep out light and undesirables objects like leaves, small animals, etc. for such period until spring when the pool will again be put in use. Room 5 into which me Ansell and her companion had been booked had boiling hot water when they moved in there. An hour or so after they had decided to move to no 9 , this room would also have had hot water as the geyser was immediately switched on when they decide to move there. As stated before they were given the keys and full use of and free access to no 5 for the use of all its facilities. An inspection of no 9 after they had left showed that they had used 3 of the 4 towels in that room. The towels in no 5 where there was boiling hot water and where they were going to watch tv with Easy View channels , ( namely channels 1,2,3,and 4 of SABC ) had not been used by their own choice. Both rooms 5 and 9 had two blankets and a duvet each. These guests were told that they were free to use whatever they needed in these rooms. So if they had wanted more blankets they knew they could fetch it from the other room as they did with the ”comforter.” In room 5, like in all the other rooms, there is a centre light with 4 compartments for light bulbs. It is untrue that any one of the globes were out. There were and still are 4 properly functioning globes light globes in the holders in no 5. The globes are however dissimilar. 3 are of one kind and one is of a different kind that is all. The statement by Me Ansell that the outside of the premises looks like a squatter camp is baseless and is merely made to be derogatory. The outside walls of the hotel have always been, also when the hotel was graded and classified , of unpainted neatly built brick. According to law, all hotel registers has to be completed if full and I hereby request SafariNow to please get the necessary information from Me Ansell of her and her companion Mr “Hans” like surname, id numbers, telephone numbers as well as vehicle registration numbers as well as the full fiscal addresses of both individuals see to the fact that Me Ansell does not want to answer our calls. If they book through you as she says in her accusation, then surely she must know that ALL particulars are lawfully needed?
