There is a good path to the potholes. The lower part is steep, but is secured with solid railings. It is about 300 metres down to the Potholes/Hell from the parking lot. This has been arranged so that you can go into the chasm and through several large craters. The largest is over 20 m in diameter and 40 m deep.
There are no written sources to explain the origin or age of the name Hell, but it has likely been in use for hundreds of years. The first time we hear about the site is in an old Gudbrandsdalen yearbook. There M. Høgåsen tells of a priest in Skåbu who had heard of Hell. “Along with with some hardy fellows from Svatsum, equipped with long ropes, he let himself be lowered into it. He came up again with some mouldy green bones in his hand and let loose with some words the people of Gausdal did not find suitable for a priest:
‘Now I am certainly the only priest in the land of Norway who can say he has been to Hell and escaped with flesh and bone intact.’”
